Abstract

The book has a cover (12) with a front (16) and back (18) consisting of several layers (22, 24, 26) not stuck to each other and made of flexible card. The individual layers are formed from a folded cutout. The outer and inner layers can move relative to an intermediate layer when the front and back are bent. There is an outer covering (32) which is glued to the outside of the outer layer and has its projecting edges (36) glued to the inside of the inner layer. One outer layer of the front and back may be connected by an outer fold (28) to an inner layer (24) which is itself connected by an inner fold (30) to at least one intermediate layer.

Description

The invention relates to a book with a book block held in a blanket, the blanket consisting of cardboard, cardboard or similar material and having two cover sheets and a back insert arranged therebetween, and with an overlay glued to the outside of the blanket, the overhanging edges of which are folded inwards are.

Book covers are supposed to bring the book into a stable, solid form, hence the expression "hardcover" or "hardcover" in contrast to the industry-standard name for brochures "softcover". However, medium-sized books are also expected to be as soft as possible when opened and not feel too stiff. For this reason, PVC ceilings are often used in manuals because, in addition to being durable, they are also very flexible. When issuing books for classics or similar high-quality books, in turn, like to use very thin blankets, as described at the beginning, to achieve the necessary softness and flexibility. At the same time, however, the book cover should give the book sufficient stability that it can also be reasonably stored in the bookcase.

If you make the book cover from thick-walled cardboard, for example 1-2 mm thick or more, stability is given, but the covers are no longer flexible. But if you go back to less than 1 mm with the material thickness of the book covers, the covers gain sufficient flexibility, but at the same time lose stability. In addition, the cover sheets made of thin-walled cardboard of about 0.6-0.8 mm thick cannot be processed with modern high-speed machines that are built for universal use in the book cover area.

Since manuals for hard-to-use handbags are placed particularly often on durable and flexible blankets, PVC is used almost exclusively. However, this material is not one of the particularly environmentally friendly materials.

The object of the invention is therefore to improve a book of the type mentioned in such a way that the cover can be made of cardboard, cardboard or similar material, is sufficiently stable and yet flexible and can be manufactured in high-speed modern high-performance machines.

This object is achieved in a book with the features of the type mentioned above in that the cover sheets are each composed of several layers of material, at least one of which is displaceable relative to at least one further layer when the cover sheet is bent, and in that the coating on the outer sides the outer layers and its overhanging edges are glued to the inner sides of the inner layers.

According to the invention, a multi-layer cover with a total thickness of 1.5 mm can be made from e.g. three individual layers are made of thin-walled cardboard, each 0.5 mm thick, which can be processed on high-speed universal machines and which is highly flexible. The individual layers of the multi-folded cardboard can slide on each other like individual sheets of a block of paper. Thanks to this design principle, the cover sheet is given the desired flexibility despite the high overall thickness.

The invention is not limited to two- or three-layer cover sheets. The cover sheets can consist of triple or quadruple or even more folded cardboard blanks, as it is also possible to use single sheets as cardboard layers. The material thickness of the layers of cardboard is preferably each Cover sheet in the range of about 0.3 to 0.8 mm, it being entirely within the scope of the invention to choose the thicknesses of the individual layers of cardboard differently.

The advantage of the invention is that the book covers have a total thickness in the range of 1.0 - 2.0 mm or more, thereby have a stable appearance and also fit well with thick books and still have sufficient flexibility. It is also essential for industrial production that the book covers can be produced on high-speed universal machines because of the total thickness of more than 1.0 mm. The book covers according to the invention are not only suitable for high-quality book editions, but also for manuals and dictionaries that are subject to heavy wear.

Embodiments of the invention are that at least two layers of a cover sheet are connected to each other by a fold. An outer layer of each cover sheet is preferably connected to an inner layer via an outer fold and this is connected to at least one intermediate layer of the cover sheet via an inner fold. One layer of the cover sheet in the transverse direction is preferably made shorter than at least one other layer in order to ensure the relative sliding of at least one of the layers. A sensible possibility is that the outer edge of the intermediate layer of a three-layer cover sheet is at a distance from the outer fold between the outer and inner layers.

The outer layer of each cover sheet is connected to the inner layer by the three overlapped edges of the cover. Nevertheless, the extensibility of the covering material allows a certain relative shift of the two layers of cover sheet when the cover sheet is bent. The liners with each other and with the outer layer and the inner layer of the cover sheet are - if at all - connected to each other by at most one fold and therefore can be moved relatively freely when the cover sheet is bent.

The book block is adhered to the inner layers of the cover sheets in a manner known per se by means of pre-and post-additions. These prefixes and suffixes largely cover the overlapping edges of the one-piece cover.

While, according to a preferred embodiment, the two multilayer cover sheets are connected to the back insert only by the covering material, it is within the scope of the invention to form one layer of both cover sheets, in particular their outer and / or inner layers and the back of the blanket. Depending on the type of material, an additional coating material can even be dispensed with. The entire blanket can then be made from a multiply folded cardboard blank.

The invention is described in more detail with reference to the drawing, which represents an exemplary embodiment.

The only figure shows a cross section through an open book.

The book, generally designated 10, has a cover 12 in which a book block 14 is suspended. The cover 12 consists of two cover sheets 16, 18 and a back insert 20. Each cover sheet 16 or 18 consists of an outer layer 22, an inner layer 24 and an intermediate layer 26, an outer fold 28 between the outer layer 22 and the inner layer 24 and between the Inner layer 24 and the intermediate layer 26, an inner fold 30 are formed. The back insert 20 is spaced from the two outer layers 22 of the cover sheets 16, 18. The blanket 12 is covered with a covering 32 of fabric material, paper, leather or other suitable Provide materials that is glued to the outside of the two outer layers 22 and the two times three overhanging edges 36 are hammered in and glued to the inner sides of the inner layers 24. The cover sheets 16, 18 are connected to the back insert 20 only by the cover 34.

The first page and the last page of the book block 14 are adhered to the inside of the inner layers 24 of the two cover sheets 16, 18 in a flat or strip-like manner by means of an attachment 38 and an attachment 40, the cover edges 36 being covered being covered. The layered structure of the book cover is therefore invisible.

The cover sheets 16, 18 are folded from a gray cardboard of 0.4 to 0.6 mm thickness so that a multi-sided spiral fold product is formed. During the folding process, the wrap fold is pre-perforated along the fold lines 28, 30, so that an exact, edge-accurate fold is possible. The outer edge of the intermediate layer 26 is at a distance from the outer fold 28, which should be in the range from 1.0 to 3.0 mm in order to enable the individual cover sheet layers to slide relative to one another. The outer layer 22 must in any case have a width at least equal to the width of the entire cover sheet folded product.

Darauf beruht die hohe Flexibilität der Deckelblätter 16, 18 trotz deren erheblicher Wandstärke von 1,2 bis 1,8 mm.The multi-page folding products are inserted into the feeder like a normal, ie single-layer cardboard blank in a book cover machine and fed to the glued covering material. The coating 32 is glued to the outside of the two outer layers 22 of the cover sheets 16, 18 and the back insert 20 and is hammered in by means of the two times three overhanging edges 36 of about 1.5 cm in width, which are glued to the inside of the inner layers 24. The three-layer folded product is thus fixed so that it can no longer open. The inside of the three-ply book cover 12 can be relatively under bending stress slide. This is the reason for the high flexibility of the cover sheets 16, 18 despite their considerable wall thickness of 1.2 to 1.8 mm.
