Abstract

A book block (12) is connected at the spine (12a) of the book block to the cover spine (20) of a partially flexible cover (14) by a detachable and reconnectable adhesive layer (36, 38) which is arranged on the inside a reinforcing strip (32) which is fixedly bonded to the cover spine (20). The reinforced cover spine, in conjunction with the bonding of the book block spine, guarantees problem-free cutting of the pamphlet. When the book (10) is opened, the book block spine (12a) separates from the cover spine (20), so that the latter is not distorted but the book opens satisfactorily. The cover sheets (16, 18) are bonded to the first (26) and last (28) pages, respectively, of the book block (12) via double-sheet front and back endpapers (40, 42; 52, 54), as a result of which the first (26) and last (28) pages are not significantly subjected to tensile stress when the cover sheets (16, 18) are opened. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a book in the form of a brochure, with a book block of sheets held together on the spine and a flexible cover comprising the book block, the front and rear cover sheets of which, directly or indirectly, each with the first or last sheet of the book block, at least in the adjacent region of the book block spine edges are connected, the back of the cover being at least largely spaced from the back of the book block when the book is opened.

Such a book is known from DE 29 36 674 A1. Since the spine of the book block is not firmly connected to the spine of the cover, the spine of the cover is not kinked or damaged when the book is opened. In addition, the book has a good opening behavior, ie a opened book is less likely to strike automatically. However, the book is still in need of improvement in that there are problems with the production. The back of the cover tends to split off from the back of the block when the brochure is pressed during the cutting process. When cutting in the three-knife machine, this very often leads to the cover being torn out Book block spine. The thinner the lid material, the more frequent and stronger this phenomenon occurs. The gap-like protrusion of the back of the cover from the back of the book block, in conjunction with the unclean cut, worsens the visual impression of the brochure. This disadvantage increases with increasing book thickness and also when using the book.

Another disadvantage of the known book is that when the cover is opened, high tensile forces act directly on the connection between the first sheet of the book block and the latter itself. Due to the stiffness of the cover, this connection is particularly at risk and if a book that is only glued is used several times, the first sheet and the last sheet of the book block can separate from it.

The object of the invention is to develop a book of the type mentioned in such a way that, while maintaining a good opening behavior, an improvement in the optical appearance, in particular in the case of thick brochures, and at the same time a higher production reliability when cutting the brochures is achieved.

This object is achieved in a book with the features of the preamble of claim 1 in that the cover spine is more rigid than at least the largest part of at least one of the cover sheets.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the stiffening of the back of the lid is achieved by gluing it on the inside with a reinforcement strip which extends over essentially the full back width of the lid. This reinforcement strip preferably consists of largely non-fibrous material. If, in the simplest case, a cardboard strip is used as the reinforcement strip, this should be achieved by finishing the surface of the strip, e.g. B. solidified by film lamination, UV coating or the like.

It is also within the scope of the invention that the hardening with a hardenable material is applied in a liquid or plastic state and that after hardening there is a hardening of the back of the lid.

The advantage of the invention is that with this stiffening of the back of the cover, unraveling or tearing out during later cutting of the finished brochure is almost completely ruled out. The immediate consequence is a better appearance of the book compared to the book of the type mentioned at the beginning. This good appearance remains preserved even after a long period of use of the book.

According to a further aspect of the invention, the cover spine on the side facing the book block spine and / or this itself has adhesive means, due to which the cover spine is firmly connected to the book block spine when the book is closed, at least before it is opened for the first time, and the adhesive effect of which is sufficiently small to prevent damage Unfold the book to allow detachment of the book block spine from the cover spine. A further development in this regard is that the adhesive or adhesives comprise a permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive which allows the back of the cover to be re-bonded to the back of the book block at least several times when the book is closed. With this embodiment of the invention, this differs from the prior art mentioned at the outset, in which the spine of the book block is not glued to the spine of the cover, rather the cover is also glued to the back as in a simple cardboard brochure. The reinforcement or stiffening of the back of the lid and a refinement of this back reinforcement according to the invention now make permanent, permanent bonding prevented from the cover spine on the book block spine. During the cutting process, the connection is so tight that problem-free cutting is ensured and fraying is prevented. The brochure has an exactly angular shape. Due to the extremely high bending stiffness of the cover spine as a result of the back reinforcement, the cover spine cannot adapt to the movement of the book block spine when the brochure is opened. The tensile forces are higher than the relatively low adhesive force, which is why the spine of the book block separates from the spine of the cover when the brochure is opened. The adhesive effect of the adhesive is preferably chosen so that the book block spine is re-glued to the cover spine when the brochure is closed. This increases the durability of the brochure and the appearance of the brochure is that of a high-quality book.

A book block can be made with or without a backing layer, the so-called folder. If such a backing support layer is used, this is - as in the prior art mentioned at the beginning - wrapped around the book block and glued to the first and last sheet of the book block or covers only the back of the book block.

The connection of the cover sheets with the book block can take place on the fold or on the first and last sheets of the book block or on both areas. With adhesive-bound products, the risk of tearing out the first sheet when opening the book is reduced, but not eliminated. In particular, the good opening behavior of a book block, on the back of which no cardboard cover is glued, leads one to open such a book as flat as possible from the start. When the front cover is opened, however, very high tensile forces are then transferred to the adhesive connection between the first sheet glued to the cover and the book block.

In order to eliminate this disadvantage, it is provided according to the invention that the first and the last sheet of the book block are each glued to one sheet (inner sheet) of a folded double sheet (leading or trailing), to the other sheet (outer sheet) the respective cover sheet is glued. The fold of each double sheet can be arranged flush with the book block spine, but is preferably arranged at a distance from the respective edge of the book block spine and it is further provided that in this area the cover sheets each have a fold groove or a pair of fold grooves. The cover is no longer directly on the book block and thus glued to the critical first and last sheet but to the outer sheet of the preferably broadly glued header or trailer. The tensile forces of the cover can thus be fully transferred to these two outer sheets when the cover is opened, without a substantial transfer of force being exerted on the inner sheet of the header or trailer. From this inner sheet almost no forces act on the first or last sheet of the book block. This means that it does not require a backing layer on the back, which makes production cheaper overall.

The invention will be described in more detail with reference to the drawing, which represents an exemplary embodiment.

The book 10 shown in the drawing consists of a book block 12 and a cover 14, the two cover sheets 16, 18 and a lid back 20. The book block 12 is shown here with a fold 22 on the back, which is glued to the rear edges of the sheets of the book block 12 by means of a glue layer 24. The fold is turned over at the front and back and additionally glued in the cover areas on the first sheet 26 and on the last sheet 28.

However, it should be expressly pointed out that such a fold 22 is unnecessary in the book according to the invention. It is sufficient to glue the book sheets together on the back with a layer of glue. You can also use a folder that is limited to the back.

Instead of a felling, a glue interspersed with fleece fibers can be used, which after hardening has a similar function to the combination of glue and felling.

A reinforcing strip 32 is firmly adhered to the back 20 of the cover by means of an adhesive layer 30, which, for example, consists of a cardboard strip, the width of which essentially corresponds to that of the back of the cover 20. This reinforcing strip 32 has a finish on its free surface, for example in the form of a film lamination 34. With this back reinforcement of the cover 14, a stabilization is achieved which, when cutting the book, unraveling. Tear out prevented.

The surface of the finishing layer 34 additionally has a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer 36 which interacts with an adhesive layer 38 which is located on the free surface of the back of the fold 22. In the closed state of the book 10, the two adhesive layers 36, 38 are firmly connected to one another, so that the book block 12 is fastened to the back cover 20. This firm connection permits problem-free cutting of the book, so that the brochure has an exactly angular shape which is retained even when in use, with no clearly visible gap between the book block spine 12a and the cover spine 20 when the book is closed. However, if the book 10 is now opened, the book block spine 12a first lifts in the middle from the cover spine 20, since this is extremely rigid due to the reinforcing strip 32. The gap is formed between the two adhesive layers 36, 38 and when opened further, the book block spine 12a is completely detached from the cover spine 20 and stands out from the latter. When the book is subsequently slammed shut, the two adhesive layers 36, 38 come into contact again and a new adhesive bond occurs between the book block spine 12a and the cover spine 20.

The cover sheets 16, 18 are connected to the first sheet 26 and the last sheet 28 of the book block 12 via so-called prefixes and suffixes. The attachment consists of a double sheet 40, 42, which has a fold 44 at a distance from the block back edge. The outer sheet 40 is connected to the cover 16 over a wide area by means of an adhesive strip 46, while the inner sheet 42, also over a wide area, is connected to the first sheet 26 of the book block 12 by means of an adhesive layer 48. In the area of this fold 44, the cover sheet 16 has a fold groove 50, so that when the book is opened, the cover 16 pivots about this fold groove 50, thereby transmitting the tensile force to the outer sheet 40 of the attachment. A hinge is formed on the fold 44 of the double sheet 40, 42. The opening of the cover sheet 16 exerts practically no tensile stress on the first sheet 26 of the book block 12. A risk of tearing out the first sheet 26 or last sheet 28 from the spine of the book block is thus eliminated.

The back cover 18 is also glued to the last sheet 28 of the book block 12 by means of a double sheet 52, 54 in the same way as the attachment.

Deviating from the version shown, the first and last paragraphs can also overlap the folded parts of the felling or vice versa. The folds 44 of the double sheets can reach up to the back edge.
