We can vary this ratio to get different stress forces for the pairs of rollers 10, 12, despite the use of a common mechanism.

    Claims (12)

    1. A device for finishing the folding of booklets made up of a stacked sheets folded along a central line, the device comprising at least one pair (12) of parallel opposed rollers which between them define a slot through which a booklet can pass, at least one (12b) of the said rollers being driven in rotation and the rollers (12a, 12b) being pressed towards one another, characterised in that the normal to the plane defined by the axes of the said pair (12) of rollers is inclined relative to the direction of advance of the booklets and in that an element (20) for deflecting a booklet is disposed upstream of the said passage slot so as to forcibly deflect the path of the booklet towards the said passage slot, starting from the said direction of advance.
    2. A device according to claim 1, characterised in that the pair (12) of rollers is preceded by another pair (10) of parallel opposed rollers which between them define a slot through which a booklet can pass, at least one (10b) of the said rollers being driven in rotation and the rollers (10a, 10b) being pressed towards one another, the plane defined by the axes of the said other pair (10) of rollers being normal to the direction of advance of the booklets.
    3. A device according to claim 2, characterised in that the spacing between the pairs (10, 12) of rollers is such that when a booklet engages in the passage slot between the downstream rollers (12a, 12b) it is still engaged in the passage slot between the upstream rollers (10a, 10b).
    4. A device according to claim 3, characterised in that the force pressing together the downstream rollers (12a, 12b) is appreciably greater than the force on the upstream rollers (10a, 10b) at the moment when the booklet engages in the passage slot between the downstream rollers.
    5. A device according to claim 4, characterised in that common pressing means (46, 48) are provided for the two pairs (10, 12) of rollers, their action being selectively applied to one or other pair.
    6. A device according to claim 5, characterised in that the said pressing means comprise two elements (42, 44) for transmitting a bearing force to the shaft of one (10a, 12a) roller in each respective pair, the bearing force being applied directly to that one (42) of the transmission elements which is associated with the upstream rollers (10a, 10b) and indirectly, by contact between said transmission elements (42, 44), to that one (44) of the transmission elements which is associated with the downstream rollers (12a, 12b).
    7. A device according to claim 6, characterised in that the transmission elements comprise two pivoting levers (42, 44) having their free ends abutting one another and intermediate parts bearing on the shaft of the associated roller.
    8. A device according to claim 7, characterised in that the bearing force is applied to the levers (42, 44) via a tension rod (46) which extends through aligned openings in the free ends of the levers.
    9. A device according to any of claims 2 to 8, characterised in that the said deflecting element is a metal guide plate (30) which extends between the pairs (10, 12) of rollers to near the passage slot between the downstream rollers (12a, 12b).
    10. A device according to any of claims 2 to 9, characterised in that the said deflecting element is an endless belt (20) fitting around one (10b, 12b) roller of each pair.
    11. A device according to any of claims 2 to 10, characterised in that at least one roller of each pair (10, 12) is positively driven in rotation, the rollers being driven in synchronism.
    12. A device according to any of claims 2 to 11, characterised in that the bottom rollers (10b, 12b) have their shafts mounted in vertically adjustable manner in an eccentric holder (34, 36) in order to vary the spacing between the rollers in dependence on the thickness of the booklets.
