  • the seal 3 also has a peripheral seat 16 to fasten a second element 5 of the device according to the present invention, as it will be further described.

  • 5 indicates a third seal or outside housing made of transparent flexible material, such as silicone, which allows a third degree of protection against the risk of cracking for the lamp glass bulb 7 or 7A.

  • the outside housing 5 has a termination 5A configurated as an O-ring type seal, fit to engage the peripheral seat 16 of the first seal 3. Therefore the housing 5 can be inserted over the lamp bulb and enclose it completely to warrant the required airtightness.
  • the housing 5 based on the type of lamp inserted in the structure 2 can aid to avoid any unwanted lamp loosening.
  • actuation means of the device 1 are provided according to the invention, located on a doorpost of the cabinet containing the refrigerating appliance.
  • the purpose of said actuation means which may consist eg. of a push-button switch - not shown in the figure for simplicity's sake - is to detect the opening and closing of the door and consequently control the switching on and off of the lamp screwed in the lampholder.
  • the seals 3 and 4 are inserted over the basic structure 2 consisting practically of a substantially standardized lampholder type as mentioned above.
  • the seal 4 is forced on the electric connection terminals 19 of the lampholder through the slots 17 and 18 to warrant gastigthness on that side and specifically in the electric contacting area 21, whereas the seal 3 is inserted over the part where the lamp will be fastened through the throat 13, using the above mentioned assembly tool.
  • the lamp is screwed as usual in the lampholder. Due to the existing seal 3, at least a part of the lamp screw-base 8 is located within the teeth 9 suitable to hinder a loosening of the lamp.
  • lip termination 10 of the seal 3 warps flexibly against the lamp bulb 7 or 7A to warrant the sealing on that side.
  • the second termination 11 of that same seal 3 warrants on the other hand a gastightness in the lower side of the joining area 6 between the lamp bulb and the screw base.
  • a gastight chamber 12 is practically formed between lip termination 10 and termination 11 to protect against a likely loosening of the bulb from the screw base.
  • the outside housing 5 made of transparent flexible material is inserted over the lamp and fits to the bulb 7 or lamp 7A geometry. Said housing 5 is fastened through its end section 5A having the form of an O-ring seal, which mates with the relevant peripheral seat 16 of the seal 3; as a result a further protection related to the possibility of a lamp bulb cracking is warranted.
  • teeth 9 are provided to hinder any unwanted lamp unscrewing; to this purpose both the seal 3 and teeth 9 are designed to require at least 0.3 N.m unscrewing torque. Obviously, this does not hinder a manual unscrewing of the lamp.
  • One of the main advantages according to the present invention is the possibility of converting a conventional lampholder (2) in an airtight lampholder (1) in a rather simple and low-cost manner, whose application is especially beneficial in the field of the refrigerating appliances, and which is suitable to warrant three different airtightness degrees:
  • the special design of this same device according to the present invention avoids the risk of casual lamp unscrewing; on the other hand its gastightness and resistance to undesired loosening does not hinder a replacement of the lamp.
  • the advantages of the present invention appear clear in terms of design simplification and manufacturing standardization, since the manufacturer can use the same lampholder basic structure 2 both for the applications that do not require airtight sealing and for those where such a sealing is required. To this purpose it should also be mentioned how the device can flexibly fit the various geometrical configurations of the lamps available, i.e. using the same components all time.
  • the main sparks source can be represented by the lighting circuit, which besides the lampholder also has a push-button switch located on the doorpost of the refrigerator cabinet. Therefore, if the refrigerator is saturated with explosive gas, also the likely sparks due to the closing of said push-button may cause a deflagration when opening the door. Therefore, a special advantageous embodiment of the present invention is provided with an airtight push-button whose electric contacts are isolated from the sorrounding environment by an adequate airtight housing enclosing them.
  • the device described above by way of example can find application in other fields other than refrigeration, i.e. wherever an airtight protection on one or more lampholder areas is required; for instance, the device described herein can be used on washing-machines, such as laundry-washers, eg. for lighting inside the washing tank , i.e. with the purpose of isolating the electric parts of the lighting system inside the washing tank and avoid humidity and water infiltrations.
