- This root is called "Pied-sapin” and the envelope of its profile forms an isosceles trapezium whose large base is closest to the base of the fin and the small base moves away from it. Its exact profile, from this envelope, includes a series of narrowing called “collars". The part of the profile between two passes is called "a notch".

This results, during the machining of the notches of the root, by a deeper machining of the notch in said zone, for example by modification of the angle of the trajectory of the milling cutter for a rectilinear root or by reduction of the radius of curvature of the path of the milling cutter for a curved root.
