Definitions
- the invention relates to paper or cardboard with a coating consisting of primer and top coat to create an aroma and vapor barrier.
- Papers or boxes coated in this way to create an aroma and vapor barrier have a variety of uses.
- the papers or cartons so formed are used, for example, as giant wrapping paper with moisture protection, heat-sealable packaging paper for the production of armored packaging for paper rolls, packaging paper with moisture protection, packaging material for food, aroma protection packaging, packaging for liquid Food, packaging for bulk goods, washing powder packaging, insulation paper for the construction industry, wallpaper paper and as a problem-free material in the recycling process.
- What is required of the paper or cardboard while maintaining all the essential advantages of these papers or cardboard is a sufficient vapor and aroma density that they continue to be food-safe and continue to be oil and fat repellent.
- they must be tasteless and odorless, bondable with special adhesives, sealable against themselves and other plastic coatings.
- PVDC polyvinyldenchloride
- vapor and aroma barriers have been achieved by coatings which are a mixture of several, preferably three, polymers, namely paraffin, carboxylated styrene butadiene as well as polyarcylate (EP-A-0 393 451).
- the disadvantage of this coating is that the coating slip can contain a great deal of wax in order to achieve the necessary vapor and aroma barrier. This expenditure of additional material means higher costs, as well as problems with recycling and heat sealing.
- DE-A-42 27 184 discloses an impregnating agent for the production of papers for achieving penetration resistance against fats, oils and aqueous media. Surface sizing takes place, in particular by means of a size press in the paper machine. However, the penetration resistance achieved with these processes is only slight and is in no way a vapor barrier.
- the invention is based on the object to provide an improved paper or an improved box of a group consisting of primer and top coat coating to create an aroma and vapor barrier.
- the primer in the coating slip consists of the components water, amorphous silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, polyvinyl alcohol and a copolymer of styrene-butadiene and acrylonitrile or of the components water, silica or precipitated silica, polyvinyl alcohol and a copolymer of styrene butadiene and acrylonitrile.
- the idea of the invention consists in a very special combination coat for creating the barrier in the sense of a synergetic effect, namely as a step essential to the invention, the linking of the special primer according to the invention with already known barrier coat coats as a top coat.
- the primers described improve the properties of these top coats, which have so far been used insufficiently, and achieve with regard to the total coat weight with conventional ones PE coatings have comparable barrier values.
- the primer according to the invention penetrates almost completely into the surface area of the paper or cardboard.
- the special selection of the individual components in the primer guarantees a saturation of the capillary fiber structure of the paper or cardboard after the polymerization and fills absorption-promoting spaces or covers them with an amorphous network structure.
- the openings remaining in the primer are sufficient to anchor the top coat well, effectively preventing it from kicking away. It is thus achieved that the aqueous components necessary for optimal polymerization remain in the top coat mass long enough and an improved arrangement of the film-forming molecules is produced.
- the essence of the invention is thus that, in order to achieve the required barrier, an arbitrary top coat which creates a vapor barrier is applied to a special primer of the invention.
- a barrier effect from the primer alone cannot be measured in accordance with DIN 53122 Klima D (over 135 g / m 2 / 24h).
- the primer almost completely prevents the migration of polymer dispersions of the top coat into the paper or cardboard. This results in improved crosslinking and thus a denser film build-up, as well as the reduction in the amount of application required, which results in a thin layer thickness.
- the combination coat according to the invention with a specific primer coat and with a further top coat suitable for producing a vapor barrier has all the essential advantages of the previous PE-coated papers or cartons and thus represents a full substitute for these.
- Papers and cardboard are food-safe, oil and grease repellent, tasteless and odorless, can be glued with special adhesives, sealable against themselves and other plastic coatings.
- the papers or cardboard boxes according to the invention can be easily recycled and have a relatively low application weight.
- the return of the papers or cardboard boxes according to the invention to the material cycle is much easier and therefore less expensive.
- the high barrier layer values already achieved with relatively low application weights mean that resources can be saved in comparison with the previous coating processes, in particular also in comparison with the PE coatings.
- the papers or boxes coated by the method according to the invention are dependent on the respective certification of the top coat component (s) used and their layer thickness as ream wrapping paper with moisture protection, heat-sealable packaging paper for the production of armored packaging for paper rolls, packaging paper with moisture protection, packaging material for food, aroma protection packaging, packaging for liquid food, packaging for bulk goods, washing powder packaging, insulation paper for the construction industry, Wallpaper papers etc. can be used.
- the primer also contains starch.
- the application amount of the primer is preferably 2.5 to 5 g / m 2 .
- the order quantity depends on the nature of the base paper or the cardboard.
- the top coat in the coating slip has a polymer dispersion or a mixture of several polymer dispersions.
- This can be, for example, ethylene / methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, styrene-butadiene or the copolymers derived therefrom.
- Essential in this polymer dispersions is the fact that these components, which by itself only relatively low vapor densities of about 15 to 20 g / m 2/24 hours (at application rates of 20 g / m 2 dry weight) achieve particular in connection with the but is 4 reach primer according to the invention significantly higher barrier effects, up to 10 g / m 2 / 24h at a significantly reduced application amounts (5 to 10 g / m 2).
- the application quantity of the primer is between 2.5 and 5 g / m 2 depending on the nature of the base paper.
- a barrier effect according to DIN 53122 Klima D by the primer alone is not measurable (over 135 g / m 2 / 24h).
- the primer according to the invention almost completely prevents the migration of polymer dispersions into the paper or cardboard. This results in improved networking and thus a denser film build-up, as well as a reduction in the required application quantity (layer thickness).
- top coat in the coating slip suggests that it consists of the basic materials water, a copolymer of styrene and butadiene modified with carnauba and paraffin wax, an ethylene / methacrylic acid dispersion and polyvinyl acetate.
- a suitable top coat can thus be assembled from the above-mentioned basic materials to achieve a vapor barrier. Part combinations can be formed from these components. The only requirement is that this combination achieves an effective vapor barrier.
- top coat in the coating slip suggests that it consists of the components water and a copolymer of styrene and butadiene modified with carnauba and paraffin wax or of the components water and an ethylene / methacrylic acid dispersion or of the components water and carboxylated styrene-butadiene or consists of the components water and a styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion.
- the top coat can contain an additional coat with a coating slip composed of the components water and a styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion.
- top coat suggests that a poly vinyl acetate is added to the top coat.
- the application quantity of the top coat is preferably 5 to 10 g / m 2 . With the specified top coats, this layer thickness is sufficient to achieve an optimal vapor barrier.
- the application of the primer and top coat is carried out by means of a doctor blade, engraving systems or by means of modifications thereof.
- the application of the precoat and top coat can thus be achieved by means of known coating techniques which are suitable for achieving thin coating layers. Machines with two coating units are preferably used.
- the paper or the cardboard is coated on both sides.
- the coatings can of course be different on the two sides in accordance with the respective requirements, the most varied combinations of the primers and top coats according to the invention being conceivable.
- the paper or the cardboard is surface-sized. This compresses the paper or cardboard surface and thus supports the effect of the primer.
- the paper or cardboard 1 can first be seen in a purely schematic manner. It can also be recycled paper, for example.
- a primer 2 is applied to the paper or cardboard 1.
- the chemical composition of this primer 2 has been previously described. It can be seen in the drawing that the primer 2 penetrates almost completely into the surface area of the paper or cardboard 1.
- the special selection of the individual components in this primer 2 guarantees saturation of the capillary fiber structure of the substrate after the polymerization and fills absorption-promoting interstices or covers them with an amorphous network structure.
- the openings remaining in the primer 2 are sufficient to anchor this top coat 3 well, effectively preventing it from striking away. The result is that the aqueous constituents necessary for optimal polymerization remain in the top coat mass long enough and an improved arrangement of the film-forming molecules is produced.
- the papers or boxes 1 created in this way considerably improve the properties of these top coats 3, which have hitherto been inadequately used, and achieve barrier values which are comparable with conventional PE coatings with regard to the total coat weight.
- the great advantage lies in the return of the paper or plastics 1 coated with the described methods to the recycling cycle. In contrast to PE-coated substrates, this recycling is much easier and therefore cheaper.
- the high junction values achieved even with relatively low application weights mean that resources can be saved in comparison with the previous coating processes. In addition, it is easily possible to use recycled paper.
- a one-sided coating is provided.
Abstract
Description
The invention relates to paper or cardboard with a coating consisting of primer and top coat to create an aroma and vapor barrier.
Papers or boxes coated in this way to create an aroma and vapor barrier have a variety of uses. Depending on the respective certification of the top coat component (s) used and their layer thickness, the papers or cartons so formed are used, for example, as giant wrapping paper with moisture protection, heat-sealable packaging paper for the production of armored packaging for paper rolls, packaging paper with moisture protection, packaging material for food, aroma protection packaging, packaging for liquid Food, packaging for bulk goods, washing powder packaging, insulation paper for the construction industry, wallpaper paper and as a problem-free material in the recycling process. What is required of the paper or cardboard while maintaining all the essential advantages of these papers or cardboard is a sufficient vapor and aroma density that they continue to be food-safe and continue to be oil and fat repellent. In addition, they must be tasteless and odorless, bondable with special adhesives, sealable against themselves and other plastic coatings. In addition, they should be able to be recycled without problems and have a relatively low order weight.
So far, it is known to provide such papers or boxes with a polyethylene coating. However, because of the well-known problems when recycling PE-coated paper or cardboard, this type of coating has considerable disadvantages.
Furthermore, as an alternative to the PE coating to solve the associated problems, coatings using polyvinyldenchloride (PVDC) with at least 15 g / m 2 were carried out (EP-A-0 375 924). However, these PVDC coatings have the disadvantage of the chlorine compound. In addition, another mineral coat must be applied to the PVDC barrier screed in order to be able to print. However, this is a cumbersome process.
In the meantime, vapor and aroma barriers have been achieved by coatings which are a mixture of several, preferably three, polymers, namely paraffin, carboxylated styrene butadiene as well as polyarcylate (EP-A-0 393 451). The disadvantage of this coating is that the coating slip can contain a great deal of wax in order to achieve the necessary vapor and aroma barrier. This expenditure of additional material means higher costs, as well as problems with recycling and heat sealing.
Allerdings ist der bei diesen Verfahren erzielte Durchdringungswiderstand nur geringfügig und keinesfalls eine Dampfbarriere.DE-A-42 27 184 discloses an impregnating agent for the production of papers for achieving penetration resistance against fats, oils and aqueous media. Surface sizing takes place, in particular by means of a size press in the paper machine. However, the penetration resistance achieved with these processes is only slight and is in no way a vapor barrier.
The lack of the previously known papers or cartons is that the vapor and aroma densities required for many packaging purposes can only be achieved with very thick layers, some of which can only be achieved with pre-and top coats applied several times, the pre-coat being the aroma barrier and Top coat to ensure the vapor barrier. However, the amount of wax contained in these lines reaches orders of magnitude that prevent easy recycling for recycling.
On this basis, the invention is based on the object to provide an improved paper or an improved box of a group consisting of primer and top coat coating to create an aroma and vapor barrier.
The invention proposes as a technical solution that the primer in the coating slip consists of the components water, amorphous silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, polyvinyl alcohol and a copolymer of styrene-butadiene and acrylonitrile or of the components water, silica or precipitated silica, polyvinyl alcohol and a copolymer of styrene butadiene and acrylonitrile.
This creates a paper or cardboard with an improved (water) vapor and aroma density, it being possible to use any base paper, for example also recycled paper, or any cardboard to which the primer coat and then the top coat coat are applied. The idea of the invention consists in a very special combination coat for creating the barrier in the sense of a synergetic effect, namely as a step essential to the invention, the linking of the special primer according to the invention with already known barrier coat coats as a top coat. The primers described improve the properties of these top coats, which have so far been used insufficiently, and achieve with regard to the total coat weight with conventional ones PE coatings have comparable barrier values. The primer according to the invention penetrates almost completely into the surface area of the paper or cardboard. The special selection of the individual components in the primer guarantees a saturation of the capillary fiber structure of the paper or cardboard after the polymerization and fills absorption-promoting spaces or covers them with an amorphous network structure. With an appropriately coordinated rheology of the top coat, the openings remaining in the primer are sufficient to anchor the top coat well, effectively preventing it from kicking away. It is thus achieved that the aqueous components necessary for optimal polymerization remain in the top coat mass long enough and an improved arrangement of the film-forming molecules is produced. The essence of the invention is thus that, in order to achieve the required barrier, an arbitrary top coat which creates a vapor barrier is applied to a special primer of the invention. A barrier effect from the primer alone cannot be measured in accordance with DIN 53122 Klima D (over 135 g / m 2 / 24h). However, the primer almost completely prevents the migration of polymer dispersions of the top coat into the paper or cardboard. This results in improved crosslinking and thus a denser film build-up, as well as the reduction in the amount of application required, which results in a thin layer thickness. The combination coat according to the invention with a specific primer coat and with a further top coat suitable for producing a vapor barrier has all the essential advantages of the previous PE-coated papers or cartons and thus represents a full substitute for these. These advantages are sufficient vapor and aroma density which Papers and cardboard are food-safe, oil and grease repellent, tasteless and odorless, can be glued with special adhesives, sealable against themselves and other plastic coatings. Above all, the papers or cardboard boxes according to the invention can be easily recycled and have a relatively low application weight. In contrast to the conventional PE-coated substrates, the return of the papers or cardboard boxes according to the invention to the material cycle is much easier and therefore less expensive. The high barrier layer values already achieved with relatively low application weights mean that resources can be saved in comparison with the previous coating processes, in particular also in comparison with the PE coatings. Thus, the papers or boxes coated by the method according to the invention are dependent on the respective certification of the top coat component (s) used and their layer thickness as ream wrapping paper with moisture protection, heat-sealable packaging paper for the production of armored packaging for paper rolls, packaging paper with moisture protection, packaging material for food, aroma protection packaging, packaging for liquid food, packaging for bulk goods, washing powder packaging, insulation paper for the construction industry, Wallpaper papers etc. can be used.
In a further development of the primer, it also contains starch.
The order quantity depends on the nature of the base paper or the cardboard.
A further development suggests that the top coat in the coating slip has a polymer dispersion or a mixture of several polymer dispersions. This can be, for example, ethylene / methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, styrene-butadiene or the copolymers derived therefrom. Essential in this polymer dispersions is the fact that these components, which by itself only relatively low vapor densities of about 15 to 20 g / m 2/24 hours (at application rates of 20 g / m 2 dry weight) achieve particular in connection with the but is 4 reach primer according to the invention significantly higher barrier effects, up to 10 g / m 2 / 24h at a significantly reduced application amounts (5 to 10 g / m 2). The application quantity of the primer is between 2.5 and 5 g / m 2 depending on the nature of the base paper. A barrier effect according to DIN 53122 Klima D by the primer alone is not measurable (over 135 g / m 2 / 24h). However, the primer according to the invention almost completely prevents the migration of polymer dispersions into the paper or cardboard. This results in improved networking and thus a denser film build-up, as well as a reduction in the required application quantity (layer thickness).
A further development of the top coat in the coating slip suggests that it consists of the basic materials water, a copolymer of styrene and butadiene modified with carnauba and paraffin wax, an ethylene / methacrylic acid dispersion and polyvinyl acetate. A suitable top coat can thus be assembled from the above-mentioned basic materials to achieve a vapor barrier. Part combinations can be formed from these components. The only requirement is that this combination achieves an effective vapor barrier.
A further development of the top coat in the coating slip suggests that it consists of the components water and a copolymer of styrene and butadiene modified with carnauba and paraffin wax or of the components water and an ethylene / methacrylic acid dispersion or of the components water and carboxylated styrene-butadiene or consists of the components water and a styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion. With these combinations, an optimal vapor barrier is generated so that the synergetic effect described above is optimally achieved together with the special primers.
The top coat can contain an additional coat with a coating slip composed of the components water and a styrene-acrylate copolymer dispersion.
A further development of the top coat suggests that a poly vinyl acetate is added to the top coat.
The application quantity of the top coat is preferably 5 to 10 g / m 2 . With the specified top coats, this layer thickness is sufficient to achieve an optimal vapor barrier.
Furthermore, it is proposed in a further development that the application of the primer and top coat is carried out by means of a doctor blade, engraving systems or by means of modifications thereof. The application of the precoat and top coat can thus be achieved by means of known coating techniques which are suitable for achieving thin coating layers. Machines with two coating units are preferably used.
It is also proposed in a further development that the paper or the cardboard is coated on both sides. The coatings can of course be different on the two sides in accordance with the respective requirements, the most varied combinations of the primers and top coats according to the invention being conceivable.
Finally, it is proposed in a further development that the paper or the cardboard is surface-sized. This compresses the paper or cardboard surface and thus supports the effect of the primer.
An embodiment of a paper or cardboard according to the invention is described below with reference to the drawing. In a purely schematic representation, this shows a kind of section through such paper or cardboard, which has been coated first with a primer and then with a top coat to create an aroma and vapor barrier.
In the drawing, the paper or
In the illustrated embodiment, a one-sided coating is provided.
