Abstract

A transfer sheet for printing a substrate comprises a base film (1), a detachable release layer (2) arranged thereunder, a varnish layer (3) of a transluscent structure, a preferably vapour-deposited metal layer (4) arranged thereunder and also an external layer facing away from the base film (1). The external layer serves for bonding the decorative layer (3, 4), composed of the varnish layer (3) and the metal layer (4), to the substrate to be printed. To provide a sheet for printing a substrate which is easier to process than known embossing foils, it is proposed to form the external layer as a sealant (5) which does not have any adhesiveness of its own. Only in combination with an adhesive, which itself is not a component part of the transfer sheet, does the sealant (5) cause the transfer sheet to be bonded to the substrate to be printed.

Description

The invention relates to a transfer film for printing on a base, consisting of a carrier film, a detachable separating layer arranged underneath, a translucent lacquer layer, a preferably vapor-deposited metal layer arranged underneath, and an outer layer facing away from the carrier film, which connects the layer from the lacquer layer and the metal layer composed decorative layer with the base to be printed serves.

A film of the type mentioned is known in the form of an embossing film from DE 29 16 723 C2. It is used to decorate flat documents, such as paper, cardboard, etc. The well-known embossing foil is composed of a layer that adheres when exposed to heat, a metal layer that can be vacuum-deposited or applied in the form of a fine metal powder, and a lacquer layer for the metal layer. A carrier film is arranged on the metal layer via a separating layer arranged between them.

When the embossing film is processed under the influence of heat, the lacquer layer detaches from the carrier film, so that the decorative layer composed of the lacquer layer and the metal layer remains at least partially on the base to be printed. The connection between the decorative layer and the base is made by the adhesive layer. This achieves its full adhesive effect due to the supply of heat during the hot stamping process.

A disadvantage of this stamping film is that the adhesive layer develops its adhesive properties within certain limits even before the heat is supplied, which makes processing of the stamping film difficult. Furthermore, a relatively large structural outlay of the film printing unit used is required for processing, since heating in the area of the printing surfaces is essential for processing the known stamping film.

The invention has for its object to provide a film for printing on a base, which is easier to process than known stamping foils.

To solve this problem, it is proposed in connection with the features mentioned at the outset that the outer layer is designed as a resin-based seal, which has no inherent adhesiveness regardless of the processing temperature.

Such a film can only be processed if the connection between the decorative layer composed of the lacquer layer and the metal layer and the substrate to be printed is achieved by means of an external adhesive. Accordingly, it is proposed that the sealing of the transfer film leads to the connection of the transfer film or its coating with the base to be printed only in connection with an adhesive which is not itself a component of the transfer film.

Since the transfer film itself does not have its own adhesiveness, it is particularly easy to process. The transfer film can be processed in film printing units or film transfer units that have no heating in the area of the printing surfaces. The transfer film according to the invention can therefore also be processed with little structural outlay of the required devices.

The seal contains an adhesion promoter to improve the connection between the decorative layer and the base.

In particular, it is proposed with the invention with regard to the sealing that this is under pressure, for example in a pressure roller mill, the connection with the external adhesive is established even at room temperature. In addition to the advantage of a simple construction of the printing roller mill, this also results in energy savings.

A further development of the invention is characterized by a covering formation of the resin layer as a seal.

Furthermore, it is advantageous if, according to a further embodiment of the invention, the seal and the lacquer layer are of the same material except for the different covering properties and, if appropriate, the addition of the adhesion promoter in the seal. This makes the manufacture of the transfer film much easier.

Further details and advantages of the object of the invention are explained below with reference to the accompanying drawings. The drawing shows in the form of a section through a transfer film according to the invention the layer structure.

The top layer is a carrier film 1 with a thickness between approximately 10 and 15 μm. In the exemplary embodiment, the carrier film 1 consists of a recyclable, ie reusable polyester film. A translucent lacquer layer 3 is arranged below the carrier film 1 with the interposition of a separating layer 2. The separating layer 2 consists of wax and has a thickness of approximately 0.01 μm. The lacquer layer 3 consists of a suitable resin and has a thickness of approximately 1 μm. It is so transparent that a metal layer 4 arranged underneath, which preferably consists of a vapor-deposited aluminum layer, shines through easily. Colored pigments can be added to the lacquer layer 3 in order to give the metallizing effect produced by the metal layer 4 a desired color direction. Thus, the use of a yellow transparent lacquer layer 3 makes the metal layer 4 arranged underneath appear gold-colored, while the use of a clear lacquer layer 3 leads to a silver-colored effect after processing of the transfer film.

In the exemplary embodiment, it is largely identical to the lacquer layer 3, but contains additives in the form of an adhesion promoter. In addition, the seal 5 contains significantly more color pigments than the lacquer layer 3, so that it is essentially opaque. In this way, before processing the transfer film, it is already visible from the outside on which side the transparent carrier film 1 is located and on which side the covering seal 5.

This visibility from the outside is of crucial importance since, unlike in the prior art, the seal 5, which is designed as an outer layer, cannot be recognized by its adhesiveness. Rather, the seal 5 does not have its own adhesive properties, neither in the cold nor in the heated state.

When processing the transfer film, it is applied with the seal 5 to the substrate to be printed under the action of a very high pressure. The underlay to be printed is provided with its own adhesive at the locations provided for film transfer. From the perspective of the transfer film, this adhesive has the property of forming an intimate connection with the self-adhesive seal 5 even at room temperature. The adhesion promoter contained in the seal 5 also contributes to this.

After the transfer film has been connected in this way to the base in question, the backing film 1, which is used only for easier processing, is pulled off, the film separating from the lacquer layer 3 in the region of the separating layer 2. The lacquer layer 3 is then the top layer, which, because of its transparency, allows the metal layer 4, which is decisive for the decorative effect, to show through optically. The color effect produced here depends on the color pigments contained in the lacquer layer 3. A layer of nitrocellulose based on acrylic resin is suitable. The same material is also used for the seal 5.

The transfer film is connected to the base to be printed using the adhesive that has already been applied to the base in advance. As soon as it comes into contact with the seal 5, chemical interlocking occurs between the material of the adhesive and the adhesion promoter contained in the seal 5. It is not necessary to heat the printing surfaces used for the printing process. However, it can be advantageous if the transfer film runs through the printing unit in a slightly heated state. For this purpose, the transfer film is slightly heated in a preheating station upstream of the printing unit. This heating also ensures that the carrier film 1 is more easily detached from the lacquer layer 3.

For this purpose, the transfer film is processed in the film transfer machine described in DE 41 10 801 C1. In contrast to the processing technology of known embossing foils, the method according to DE 41 10 801 C1 does not emboss and thus deform the foil. Likewise, this is not cut up. The carrier film 1 can therefore be reprocessed and, after renewed coating, be reused.
