Description

The invention relates to a folding apparatus for rotary printing presses, to which individual folding sheets or folding sheet packages to be folded can be fed in series.

Folders for web-fed rotary printing presses are generally known. Such a folder is described in DE 33 21 811 C2. In it, folded sheets are fed via a first, upper and lower belts, near the press, faster running ribbon line to a delay line, behind which they are fed to a second, again upper and lower ribbons, slower running, remote from the press or a pair of folding rollers. The folded sheets are placed one behind the other, i.e. processed serially. This makes it necessary to feed them to the folder in a precisely defined manner and to ensure, for example with the aid of the delay line described here, a certain speed of the folder copies as they pass through the folder. As a result, such a folder quickly reaches its performance limit at higher processing speeds, depending on the type of fold and type of paper. Because the associated web-fed rotary printing press generally has a higher output than the downstream folder, this means that the web-fed printing press cannot be fully extended.

From EP 0 250 774 B1 a "device for receiving and continuing folding products" is known in which folding products are stored next to each other. An approximately zigzag-shaped support structure made of, for example, elastic sheets welded to one another at the contact points can be displaced along guide rails. In a pushed-together form, the carrier structure can be removed from an empty store and pulled or pushed into an unloading, loading or mixing area, where the expanded support structure is ready to receive folded products. The folded products can then be stored compactly on or in the support structures in a memory.

From JP 61-37667 (A) a folding device for the simultaneous folding of two folded copies is known, the edges of which face one another during the folding process. Two folding knives are simultaneously moved between two rotatably mounted rollers by means of a control via a cam drive and thereby fold the two folding copies.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a folder which is also suitable for the rapid processing of folded products.

In a folder of the type mentioned, the object is achieved in that first folding units are provided in that the folding sheets or the folding sheet packages can be fed to the first folding units parallel in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of the serial feed and simultaneously foldable in them, whereby the number of folding sheets or folding sheet packages that can be fed in parallel corresponds to the number of folding units.

A web-fed rotary printing press upstream of the folder according to the invention can therefore be operated at the highest speed; at the same time, the folder guarantees high quality with a large throughput of folder copies. Further advantages result from the subclaims.

In a transport device 1 (FIG. 1), folded sheets 9, which are initially stacked on a stack 2, are individually removed from the stack 2 by a gripper chain 3 in a manner known per se. Instead of the individual folded sheets 9, folded sheet stacks can also be removed. The gripper chain 3 has gripping units 300 with stops 301. Corresponding to the distance between the gripping units 300, the folding sheets 9 which hang on the gripper chain 3 have the same distances from one another and are transported in the direction of an arrow 4 to folding units 8 (FIG. 3). Above the folding units, the gripper chain 3 is stopped for a short period of time. A trigger rail 5 arranged above the gripper chain 3 and having projections 501 which engage behind the stops 301 is moved either successively or simultaneously in the direction of arrows 6, 7 to the gripper chain 3, so that the stops 301 are opened by the projections 501. As a result, the folded sheets 9 are simultaneously fed to the individual folding units 8.

Instead of the transport device 1 according to FIG. 1, a transport device 14 with storage cartridges 140 (FIG. 2) can also be provided. Here, folded sheets 9 are already folded in from the DE 36 21 832 C1 mentioned above in a manner known per se in zigzag-shaped carrier structures 10, 11. With the aid of drivers 121 located on transport chains 12, 13, the folded sheets 9 are removed from the carrier structures 10, 11 with the storage cartridges 140 in the direction of an arrow 15 pulled out on rails 16. The support structures 10, 11 have spacers 100, by means of which the folded sheets 9 are kept equally spaced from one another. Subsequently, the support structures 10, 11 with the folded sheets 9 are each brought to a position above the folding units 8 (FIG. 3). Each of the folding units 8 has a pair of transport rollers 17, which can be moved in the direction of an arrow 18 into a position 17 '. The transport rollers 17 are pushed together at the same time so that they grip the folded sheet 9. At the same time, the folded sheet 9 is released in that the support structures 10, 11 move apart in the direction of arrows 19, 20. The folded sheet 9 is then transported in the direction of an arrow 21 until it assumes a position 9 '. The folded sheet 9 slides laterally from sheets 23, 24, 25, 26 until it lies between them in position 9 'with its lower edge supported on stops 27, 28. In addition, the folded sheet 9 is aligned by stops 31 and 32, which are fastened on the rails 29, 30 and move in opposite directions to one another in the directions of arrows 33, 34. The sheets 23 are each attached to rails 36 via elastic tongues 35.

A folder has a plurality of the folding units 8, which are arranged next to one another in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the serial feed of the folding sheets 9, as indicated by the arrows 4 and 15, the folding sheets 9 parallel and record at the same time. The direction of the parallel recording can, for example, also deviate from that of the arrow 21 by ± 10 °.

As already indicated above, the folding units 8 are located next to one another (FIG. 4) in order to receive the folding sheets 9 simultaneously from the carrier structures 10, 11 via the transport rollers 17. When the folded sheets 9 are at rest with their lower edge on the stops 27, 28, the sheets 23 are moved over the rails 36 in the direction of an arrow 37 (FIG. 5), and thereby one half of each folded sheet 9 is pressed against the sheets 24 pressed and held by them.

The folding units 8 each have a folding roller 38 which is fixedly but rotatably mounted in the respective sheet 24. Each of the folding rollers 38 is assigned a further folding roller 39 which is also rotatably mounted in a fork-shaped holder 40. However, the folding roller 39 can also be moved laterally by the holder 40. The bracket 40 is guided between the sheets 25 and sheets 41 and blocks 42 and 43 (Fig. 4) longitudinally. The blocks 42, 43 are each fastened to a carrier 44 (FIG. 5). The folding rollers 39 can be moved by means of a pneumatically operated cylinder 46, for example, via the holder 40 and a lever 45, which is mounted on the carrier 44. After the sheets 26 have been moved so far against the sheets 25 by a common rail 48 in the direction of arrow 37 that the folding sheets 9 are held taut when the folding knives 47 penetrate, the folding rollers 39 are moved into a position 39 'in order to impress them the folding sheets 9 by the folding knife 47 to facilitate. Only one half (i.e. the lower half according to FIG. 5) is moved away in the direction 34, while the other half (i.e. the upper half) remains clamped between the sheets 23 and 24, so that an exact fold is achieved. The folding blades 47 are jointly fastened to a rail 49 (cf. FIG. 3) and are moved in the direction of the arrow 37 (FIG. 5) into a position 47 ', so that the angled ends of the folding blades 47 push into the folding sheets 9 and push them in.

In order to set the folding knives 47 centrally between the folding rollers 38, 39 for each thickness of the folding sheets 9, the folding knives 47 are arranged by pinions 50, toothed racks 51 via guides (cf. FIG. 3) in such a way that they move in the direction of the arrow 37 let move. The folding rollers 39 are then moved through the cylinders 46 moved from position 39 'in the direction of arrow 34 to position 39 and produce the fold break at the end of the folding process.

After the folding process has been completed, i.e. after generation of the fold break, the air pressure in the cylinders 46 is reduced to such an extent that the folded sheets 9 are transported further by the rotation of the folding rollers 38, 39. At the same time, the folding blades 47 are withdrawn from their positions 47 'into their starting position. The stops 28 (FIG. 3) are moved via a common rail 58 into a position 28 ′ (FIG. 5) in order to support the folded folded sheets 9. At the same time, the folding rollers 39 are driven via spur gears 53, 54 and chain wheels 55 (FIGS. 3, 5, 8) in the direction of an arrow 56 (FIGS. 5, 7), while the folding rollers 38 are set in motion by the friction with the folding sheets 9 become. The chain wheels 55 are driven via a common chain 57 (FIGS. 5, 7). As a result, the folded folded sheets 9 come into a position 9 ″ between the sheets 41 and sheets 59, as can be seen in particular from FIGS. 6 and 7. In this position, after the stops 28 (FIG. 9) have moved back from the position 28 'into the starting position 28, the toothed sheets 9 are gripped by pairs of toothed belts 60 in a position 60'. The pairs of toothed belts 60 are each moved via drive rollers 601, 602, which are moved from position 60 to position 60 'via a rack (not shown here) analogous to the transport rollers 17. From this position, the folded sheets 9 are transported further via guide tongues 61 (FIG. 3) and, for example, fed to a device for stacking printed products, as is known from DE 38 11 289 C2.

Darauf erhält er einen zweitenFolding units which are constructed like the folding units 8 described in FIGS. 1 to 9 can be connected in series in order to fold the folding sheets 9 several times. A folding sheet 62 (FIG. 10) receives its first transverse fold along a folding line 66 (FIG. 10) in a first folding unit with the aid of folding rollers 63, 64 and a folding knife 65 (FIG. 11). Then he receives a second one

Cross fold along a folding line 67 with the aid of a second folding station which has folding rollers 68, 69 and a folding knife 70 (FIGS. 10, 11). In a third folding station, a longitudinal fold is produced along a folding line 71 (FIG. 10) by means of folding rollers 72, 73 (FIGS. 10, 11) and a folding knife 74 (FIG. 11). Such folding stations can be arranged one after the other in any order.

In this way, according to the invention, a plurality of folding stations 8 work in parallel, which are simple in construction and process a considerable number of folding sheets 9 simultaneously. Compared to a purely serial folding device, there is more time available for each folding process in the parallel folding device, so that it can be controlled precisely. Any special folds can be produced by connecting folding stations in series, as shown in FIGS. 10, 11.
