Description

The invention relates to fire extinguishers for CO 2 and more specifically relates to a new multiple safety distribution valve.

Fire extinguishers of the CO 2 type are, as we know, essentially constituted by a reservoir onto an opening of which is screwed a head or valve for distributing the gas towards an outlet blunderbolt. The valve is equipped with a carrying handle and a control lever which, once unlocked, acts on a push-button for operating a shutter valve, the opening of which communicates the tank with the blunderbuss. The distribution chamber inside the valve, upstream of the valve, is connected to an overpressure safety device using a cover which breaks at a determined pressure and causes the tank to be emptied by small safety orifices.

A valve of this type is therefore forcibly screwed onto the tank, and when it comes to replacing CO 2 , after using the fire extinguisher or a gas leak by the safety device, it is necessary to unscrew the valve and replace it because it is no longer reusable. The fact that this valve cannot be renovated is a certain economic disadvantage which the Applicant therefore intends to remedy.

Apart from that, it appeared that this known valve does not always offer any guarantee of safety in the event of accidental impact. In fact, the device is generally delivered without the blunderbuss being screwed onto the valve.

Certainly the locking pin which blocks the control lever and consequently the opening of the valve is supposed to guarantee this incident. However, its accidental triggering is not entirely excluded, however. In addition, the handling of the device, the pulling out of the pin and the orientation of the tank towards the fire hearth linked to the position of the blunderbuss relative to the valve, presents difficulties which have led the Applicant to rethink a new distribution valve which completes the passive safety, known per se, putting in place operates the breakable cover, by active safety in case of accidental opening of the valve when the blunderbuss is not mounted.

This arrangement is particularly important when you know what pressure the CO 2 can escape from the distribution valve. The distribution valve according to the invention also provides a certain number of advantages compared to known valves, in particular in that it is reusable after replacing the CO 2 , and in that it is better suited to the direct mounting of a blower, or mounting the blower at the top of a hose.

The invention therefore relates to a distribution valve for fire extinguisher, connected by a dip tube to a CO 2 tank, comprising a control lever which can be operated after action on an unlocking member to ensure the opening of a shutter valve which puts in communication an internal distribution chamber connected to a CO 2 reservoir, with a gas outlet blunderbuss, said internal chamber being connected to a safety trap with breakable cover constituting passive safety in the event of overpressure in the reservoir, said valve being equipped, with at least one additional active safety device in the event of accidental opening of the valve, device which is located at the connection of the valve to the blaster, and at least one device complementary to the passive safety device with air vent.

According to a particular characteristic of the invention, the additional active safety device consists of a ball placed inside the fitting, which is applied by a small spring against a ring attached to the inside of said fitting, and the device additional passive safety system consists of a cover protector in the form of a double-shell which completely envelops the distribution valve and which is provided with lights communicating the inside of the cover with the outside.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the internal distribution chamber develops horizontally in the valve body and communicates by a passage with the outlet connection towards the blaster, connection which is oriented upwards, and the safety trap at breakable cover is screwed onto a stopper which closes the internal distribution chamber.

Other particular characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description which follows of an embodiment referring to the appended drawings which represent:

Figure 1 a schematic elevational view of the fire extinguisher.

Figure 2 a sectional view on a larger scale of the dispensing valve.

The valve, as well as the reservoir are held by a carrying handle 4 and a control lever 5 makes it possible to open the valve 1 subject to the unlocking of a locking pull tab 6. Finally the valve is capped with a cover. protection 7 having the form of a double shell held at said valve by screws 8.

Referring now to FIG. 2, the distribution valve 1 is described. The valve body contains an internal conduit 10 which places the reservoir 2 in communication with an internal distribution chamber 11, itself connected by a passage 12 to the outlet connection 13. It will be noted that the substantially vertical inner conduit 10 opens into the chamber 11 which develops horizontally in the valve body, and that the passage 12 is in direct communication with the outlet connector 13 facing upwards. The advantages of this particular arrangement will appear below. A shutter valve 14, applied against its seat by a spring 15 and located in the distribution chamber closes the passage 12. The valve can be opened by action on the control lever 5 acting on a pusher 16 bearing against said valve, when zipper 6 has been unlocked. The chamber 11 is closed by a plug 17 provided with a central opening into which is screwed a safety trap 18 closed by a cover 19, which breaks as soon as the pressure of the CO 2 in the internal chamber exceeds a predetermined value. This passive safety trap is advantageously placed coaxially with the plug 17. Before filling, by removing the plug, the shutter valve can be easily accessed without having to separate the valve from the tank.

This passive safety is supplemented by active safety located at the outlet connection 13. It essentially comprises a ball 20 with a diameter less than the diameter of the connection, which is held by a small spring 21, applied against a ring 22 attached to inside the fitting. When the blunderbuss is not screwed onto it, the ball closes the central orifice of the ring, under the action of the spring 21. Normally, since the shutter valve 14 is closed, there is no pressure CO 2 in passage 12. However, in the event of untimely action on the control lever 5 or in the event of an impact, which would lead to the opening of the valve, the high pressure of CO 2 which would be established in passage 12 complete the thrust on the ball 20 and the sealing of the connection. Thus, as long as the blunderbuss 3 is not mounted on the valve, there is no risk of gas escape. On the other hand, the screwing of the blunderbuss 3 on the fitting 13 has the effect of driving the ball into the interior of the fitting against the small spring 21, and thus putting the passage 12 into communication with the blunderbuss. This is done for example thanks to a needle placed in the intake pipe of the blunderbuss.

In fact, the cover completely envelops the distribution valve 1. On the side of the plug 17 it is pierced with lights 23 which make the inside of the cover communicate with the outside. The user of the extinguisher therefore has no access to the plug 17 except for removing the screws 8. There is therefore no risk of unintentional unscrewing of the plug or of the trap. In addition, in the event of the safety cover 19 breaking, the CO 2 escaping from the trap is diffused towards the outside by the lights 23.

At its connection with the tank 2 the distribution valve 1 is screwed to said tank but ends - in the extension of the conduit 10, by a dip tube 24 clipped on the valve by a stapling clips 25. The mounting and the disassembly of the valve is thereby simplified. With the valve thus equipped, the device is easily gripped and operated by the user. Thanks to the unlocking pull tab located above, which moves upwards, the user - whether right or left-handed - can easily unlock the device and actuate the control lever. Note also that the vertical outlet of the connector 13, which lends itself to direct mounting of the blinker as shown in Figure 1, also facilitates the mounting of a hose between the connector and the blunderbuss.
