Abstract

PCT No. PCT/EP92/02954 Sec. 371 Date Aug. 18, 1993 Sec. 102(e) Date Aug. 18, 1993 PCT Filed Dec. 18, 1992 PCT Pub. No. WO93/13572 PCT Pub. Date Jul. 8, 1993.In a blade contact for electric plug connectors with a strip-like contact part, a supporting body securable on the plug casing, and with crimping attachments for securing an electrical conductor and its insulation jacket on the blade contact, the support is made safer while reducing the constructional expenditure, and the flow of current is enhanced by the arrangement of a sheet-metal blank cut to size with a substantially rectangular section extending across partial lengths of said blank for forming the contact part, and with a tab on each side projecting beyond the section of forming the contact part, as well as with tabs disposed in line with the section and projecting laterally beyond the latter for forming crimping attachments, and of which the tabs are bent back outward rearwardly, whereas the tabs for the crimping attachments are set obliquely outward.

Description

The invention relates to a knife contact for electrical connectors with a strip-shaped contact part, a support body which can be fixed to the connector housing and with crimp attachments for fixing an electrical conductor and its insulating jacket, which is formed by a flat sheet metal blank with an essentially rectangular shape extending over part lengths thereof of the contact part foldable section and a section projecting over the section on both sides, bendable to form the supporting body and tabs arranged on the section for forming the crimp attachments are provided.

From US-A-4253718 a knife contact which can be erected from a sheet metal blank is known, in which sections of the contact part are folded onto a central section of the contact part in laboriously lying fold lines lying in mutually opposite edge regions. Flaps are arranged on the foldable sections, which can be bent on the same side transversely to the plane of the contact part and serve as a support body for the knife contact in the knife contact housing. In addition to the fact that the tabs only allow asymmetrical support of the knife contact, the supporting forces effective only on one side of the contact part also place undesired bending moments on the knife contact.

Find a flat contact spring according to DE-U-89 02 356 Edge strips on a central section application, which can be folded to form the contact part by two fold lines lying in the peripheral areas on the central section. Due to the lack of bent support bodies, the position of the flat contact spring in the spring housing is unsafe. A perforation for the engagement of a holding tongue fixed to the spring housing is provided to secure the position. The perforation has an unfavorable influence on the current flow.

It is an object of the invention to reduce the construction effort of knife contacts of the above type, to make the support of the knife contact in the connector housing more secure and to create the prerequisite for an unimpeded current flow.

According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the portion forming the contact part over a substantial axial partial length together with the two flaps along a fold line lying in the axis of symmetry are folded plane-parallel to one another by 180 degrees and that the flaps are bent outwards.

In this way, the knife contact can be produced with little construction effort and, by dispensing with perforations to support the knife contact in the contact housing, leads to an unimpeded current flow. In addition, the knife contact can be supported on both sides of the contact part in a symmetrically secured manner in the contact housing and remains free of bending. In addition, the knife contact is characterized by mechanical robustness, which enables the use of materials of lower strength but higher electrical conductivity.

The tabs preferably have arc sections adjoining the section forming the contact part and flat sections adjoining the arc sections, the arc sections and the flat sections of the tabs projecting beyond the section forming the contact part parallel to the fold line. The arc sections are designed so that the section forming the contact part in the area of the tabs together with the tabs transversely to the direction of insertion has a substantially meandering cross-section, with the possibility of carrying out the support body with any width to the contact part by corresponding radii on the arc sections .

In a configuration of the knife contact, it is provided that the flat portions of the tabs either extend plane-parallel to one another or are designed to extend obliquely towards the free end. The tabs can be made rigid or resilient in whole or in sections, so that the knife contact with the tabs can be inserted and held in the connector housing under prestress, if necessary.

Provision is further made to bend the free end of the flat section of at least one tab to form a box-shaped support body over a partial length and / or partial width transversely to the fold line plane. The free ends of the two sections can preferably have bends pointing towards one another.

In a further embodiment, the curved sections of the tabs have at least one indentation or pushout serving as stiffening, for example a bead. This prevents accidental bending of the tabs, for example when inserting the blade contact into the connector housing.

Furthermore, the tabs can have recesses in the area of the arch sections and / or over part-width sections of the flat sections. The fixation of the knife contact in the knife contact housing can be supported by the engagement of plug bodies fixed in the recesses.

Gegebenenfalls in den Randkantenbereichen der Längskanten der Kontaktteilabschnitte vorgesehene Absetzungen lassen die Bildung einer Einführungsspitze am Messerkontakt zu.Finally, measures to make it easier to insert the knife contact into associated contact sockets can be achieved if the section forming the contact part has a slit on the free plug end in the fold line over a partial length and the ends of the contact part sections thus formed extend towards the free end and to the slit are bent in a mutually pressing manner. Any deposits provided in the marginal edge areas of the longitudinal edges of the contact sections allow the formation of an insertion tip on the knife contact.

In the figures, 1 designates a connector housing for receiving knife contacts 2. The individual knife contact 2 has a contact part 3, a support body 4 for the purpose of axially fixing the knife contact 2 in the plug housing 1 and crimp attachments 5 and 6. The knife contact 2 is formed by a single sheet metal blank 7 (FIG. 8), which over partial lengths has a substantially rectangular section 8 for forming the contact part 3 and section 8 laterally projecting tabs 9, 10 and 11 for forming support body 4 and crimp attachments 5 and 6. The sheet metal blank 7 is folded with the section 8 along a fold line 12 over the length of the knife contact 2 and support body 4 with the tabs 9 extending on both sides of the fold line 12 by 180 degrees. The lobes 9 forming the support body 4 are, as illustrated in FIG. 2, bent back over curved sections 9 ', which results in an essentially meandering cross section in the region of the support body 4 through the contact part 3 and the lug 9 (FIG. 5). The curved sections 9 'and the flat sections 9 "adjoining the curved sections 9' protrude beyond the contact part 3 parallel to the plane of the fold line, as a result of which support surfaces are formed on the support body which, when the knife contact 2 is introduced into the plug housing 1 with plug housing surfaces at 13 (FIG. 1 The support body 4 can be gripped behind in the connector housing 1 by means of a bendable extension 14 which is fixed to the connector housing (FIG. 1) and which can be pushed into the connector housing 1 by means of a clamping body 16 can be fixed in the rear grip position. The curved sections 9 'or the curved sections 9' and parts of the flat sections 9 '' can be provided with beads 15 (FIG. 5) which serve to solidify the curved sections 9 'and help prevent the flaps 9 from being accidentally bent back.

Es besteht die Möglichkeit, durch Eingreifen von stackergehäusefesten Klemmkörpern (nicht gezeigt) in die Aussparungen 18 eine axiale Fixierung des Messerkontaktes vorzunehmen oder zu unterstützen.6, the arc sections 9 'and the flat sections 9' 'of the tabs 9 are provided with cutouts 18 (FIG. 6), which are preferably designed to be trapezoidal. There is the possibility of engaging or supporting an axial fixation of the knife contact by engaging clamp bodies (not shown) fixed in the stacking housing.

In the embodiment of FIG. 7, the free ends of the flat sections 9 ″ are bent over part of their length 9 ″ ″ in the direction of the fold line plane 12 and thus form a box-shaped support body 4. This support body 4 is characterized by great stability. While in the exemplary embodiments shown the tabs 9 ″ extend essentially plane-parallel to one another, there is also the possibility of extending the sections 9 ″ of the tabs 9 obliquely towards the free end and to make the tabs 9 either rigid or resilient. An oblique exposition of the sections 9 ″ enables the compensation of tolerances between the knife contact 2 and the receptacle 19 for the latter in the plug housing 1.

The flaps 10 and 11 of the sheet metal blank 7 are at an angle to the fold line plane of the contact part 3 and serve to fix an electrical conductor (not shown) or to insulate it.

The contact part 3 is further, as shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, provided at the free end of the section 8 over a partial length with a slot 20 and the free section ends 8 ', 8' 'thus formed are bent toward one another to form an insertion bevel. The ends 8 ', 8 "facilitate the insertion of the knife contact 2 into associated contact sockets (not shown). In addition, the marginal edges of the free ends 8', 8" are provided with shoulders 23, which enable the formation of an insertion tip.
