Definitions
- the invention relates to self-adhesive and pressure-sensitive materials (adhesive tapes) which are provided on their self-adhesive surface with a cover which can be easily removed, contains no silicone, is high-strength and can be recycled.
- Self-adhesive and pressure-sensitive materials e.g. adhesive tapes
- adhesive tapes often have to be reversibly covered on the (adhesive) active surface during the manufacturing process, transport and storage in order to prevent them from sticking to themselves.
- covers allow, for example, a targeted adjustment of the rolling resistance, which is of crucial importance, in particular, when machine use of adhesive tape rolls in automatic packaging systems.
- Usual reversible covers usually contain silicone-containing coatings that are adhesive-repellent. Such silicone-containing covers, however, have a number of disadvantages. On the one hand, it cannot be generally ruled out that traces of the silicone stick to the adhesive layer when the cover is pulled off, as a result of which the adhesion of the adhesive in contact with a new substrate is reduced. On the other hand, the silicones stand in the way of recovery of the pure material used as the carrier (cover). Such siliconized materials can only be disposed of via landfill or incineration. Thermal forming is ruled out for silicone-containing material.
- the object was therefore to provide a cover for adhesive tapes which is in no way inferior in terms of its property profile to siliconized carriers, but which does not have the disadvantages of the siliconized carriers described above.
- the invention further relates to a method for producing the covered carrier and the use of an embossed embossing film as a cover film for self-adhesive carriers.
- Pressure-sensitive self-adhesive carriers are well known and are described, for example, in EP-A-0 028 771. Embossable polyester films are also known (EP-A-0 115 033). In the unpublished German application P 41 33 142.7 it is proposed to use the embossed embossing film according to EP-A-0 115 033 as a release film for the production of surface-structured, decorative layers. There is no indication of a possible use of such embossed foils as a cover for self-adhesive supports.
- Covering in the sense of the invention is understood to mean a material which protects the adhesive layer of an adhesive-finished carrier and can, if desired, be removed without at least substantially damaging the adhesive layer and / or the carrier.
- a carrier is understood to be a structure which is provided at least on one surface with a self-adhesive coating which the carrier is coated with by simply exerting pressure (pressure-sensitive) More or less firmly connects the substrate.
- carrier is understood to mean an adhesive tape film which usually consists of a single- or multi-layer thermoplastic such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene or polyethylene terephthalate and is coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
- Pressure-sensitive here means that the adhesive effect is achieved by simply applying pressure without an increase in temperature or additives to be added (self-adhesive).
- the basis of the invention is an embossable, stretched and heat-set multilayer film made of polyesters with different melting points, comprising two outer polyester layers made of polyethylene terephthalate, between which a lower-melting polyester layer made of copolyesters with ethylene terephthalate and ethylene isophthalate units is embedded.
- Such an embossable multilayer film is described in EP-A-0 115 033, to which reference is expressly made here. It can, for example, be laminated onto a carrier, for example a book cover, as an unembossed film and then embossed under the influence of pressure and temperature, which creates a desired relief-like pattern.
- the embossable polyester film is a multilayer film, the characteristic features of which can be seen in the fact that the film is biaxially stretched and that the intermediate layer consists of a copolyester which contains between 5 and 95% by weight of ethylene isophthalate units. It is preferred that the outer polyester layer from which the embossing is made is thinner in thickness than the second outer polyester layer.
- the embossability is very good, that there is no tendency to stick to the tool during the embossing process and that higher temperatures can be used during the embossing process, so that the embossing depth also The load remains at higher temperatures.
- Polyethylene terephthalate with a melting temperature between 240 and 260 ° C. is preferably used for the outer layer and a copolyester with a melting temperature between 190 and 230 ° C. is used for the intermediate layer.
- the multilayer film preferably has an asymmetrical structure; the outside polyester layer from which the embossing is made is thinner than the second outside polyester layer, which is arranged opposite the side from which the embossing is made.
- the thickness of the multilayer film is 5 to 1000 ⁇ m, preferably 10 to 350 ⁇ m, particularly preferably 10 to 200 ⁇ m.
- the outer polyester layer, from which the embossing is carried out has a thickness of at least 0.01 ⁇ m, preferably from 0.1 to 10 ⁇ m, very particularly preferably from 0.1 to 5 ⁇ m.
- the thickness of the intermediate layer is at least 0.5 ⁇ m, preferably between 1 and 100 ⁇ m, particularly preferably between 2 and 40 ⁇ m.
- the second outer polyester layer which is arranged opposite the side from which the embossing is carried out, has a thickness of at least 1 ⁇ m, preferably from 1 to 100 ⁇ m, particularly preferably from 5 to 50 ⁇ m.
- copolyesters used as the intermediate layer contain between 5 and 50% by weight of ethylene isophthalate units.
- polyester intermediate and outer layers are co-extruded, biaxially stretched and heat-set by the customary, generally known methods.
- the best way to emboss the multilayer film is to bring the film into contact with a structured surface, preferably a roller, under sufficient pressure, the structure of which is then transferred to the three-layer film.
- Point-shaped or line-shaped elevations of 5 to 50 ⁇ m in height and an average diameter or width of 5 to 20 ⁇ m have been found to be suitable structures that are uniformly distributed over the entire length and width of the embossing film.
- the number of these surveys per mm2 should - depending on the diameter / width - be approximately 100 to 25.
- the embossing film can be given a groove-like or wave-like profile, for example in the form of, for example, concentric rings, etc. It is crucial that the total contact area is reduced by pressing in (embossing) surface areas so that a point or surface bearing web-shaped elevations arises.
- the shape of this embossing plays a subordinate role here.
- the cover is expediently applied to the pressure-sensitive, self-adhesive surface by contacting both surfaces.
- the cover is expediently fed to the adhesive tape as a film tape of the same width shortly before it is rolled up on the side provided with adhesive and rolled up together with the adhesive tape.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to self-adhesive and pressure-sensitive materials (adhesive tapes) which are provided on their self-adhesive surface with a cover which can be easily removed, contains no silicone, is high-strength and can be recycled.
Self-adhesive and pressure-sensitive materials (e.g. adhesive tapes) often have to be reversibly covered on the (adhesive) active surface during the manufacturing process, transport and storage in order to prevent them from sticking to themselves. In addition, such covers allow, for example, a targeted adjustment of the rolling resistance, which is of crucial importance, in particular, when machine use of adhesive tape rolls in automatic packaging systems.
Usual reversible covers usually contain silicone-containing coatings that are adhesive-repellent.
The object was therefore to provide a cover for adhesive tapes which is in no way inferior in terms of its property profile to siliconized carriers, but which does not have the disadvantages of the siliconized carriers described above.
This task is solved by a covered pressure-sensitive self-adhesive carrier, which is covered with an embossed embossing foil on the surface which is equipped with pressure-sensitive self-adhesive.
The invention further relates to a method for producing the covered carrier and the use of an embossed embossing film as a cover film for self-adhesive carriers.
Pressure-sensitive self-adhesive carriers are well known and are described, for example, in EP-A-0 028 771.
Covering in the sense of the invention is understood to mean a material which protects the adhesive layer of an adhesive-finished carrier and can, if desired, be removed without at least substantially damaging the adhesive layer and / or the carrier.
A carrier is understood to be a structure which is provided at least on one surface with a self-adhesive coating which the carrier is coated with by simply exerting pressure (pressure-sensitive) More or less firmly connects the substrate. In particular, carrier is understood to mean an adhesive tape film which usually consists of a single- or multi-layer thermoplastic such as polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene or polyethylene terephthalate and is coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Pressure-sensitive here means that the adhesive effect is achieved by simply applying pressure without an increase in temperature or additives to be added (self-adhesive).
The basis of the invention is an embossable, stretched and heat-set multilayer film made of polyesters with different melting points, comprising two outer polyester layers made of polyethylene terephthalate, between which a lower-melting polyester layer made of copolyesters with ethylene terephthalate and ethylene isophthalate units is embedded. Such an embossable multilayer film is described in EP-A-0 115 033, to which reference is expressly made here. It can, for example, be laminated onto a carrier, for example a book cover, as an unembossed film and then embossed under the influence of pressure and temperature, which creates a desired relief-like pattern.
- a) does not contain silicone,
- b) the low adhesion between the adhesive layer and cover film is achieved by minimizing the contact area (small elevations),
- c) is high strength, and
- d) is pure and therefore recyclable.
The embossable polyester film is a multilayer film, the characteristic features of which can be seen in the fact that the film is biaxially stretched and that the intermediate layer consists of a copolyester which contains between 5 and 95% by weight of ethylene isophthalate units. It is preferred that the outer polyester layer from which the embossing is made is thinner in thickness than the second outer polyester layer.
It has been shown that by covering the middle layer having the lower melting point with the higher melting polyester layers, the embossability is very good, that there is no tendency to stick to the tool during the embossing process and that higher temperatures can be used during the embossing process, so that the embossing depth also The load remains at higher temperatures.
Polyethylene terephthalate with a melting temperature between 240 and 260 ° C. is preferably used for the outer layer and a copolyester with a melting temperature between 190 and 230 ° C. is used for the intermediate layer.
The multilayer film preferably has an asymmetrical structure; the outside polyester layer from which the embossing is made is thinner than the second outside polyester layer, which is arranged opposite the side from which the embossing is made. The thickness of the multilayer film is 5 to 1000 μm, preferably 10 to 350 μm, particularly preferably 10 to 200 μm. The outer polyester layer, from which the embossing is carried out, has a thickness of at least 0.01 µm, preferably from 0.1 to 10 µm, very particularly preferably from 0.1 to 5 µm. The thickness of the intermediate layer is at least 0.5 μm, preferably between 1 and 100 μm, particularly preferably between 2 and 40 μm. The second outer polyester layer, which is arranged opposite the side from which the embossing is carried out, has a thickness of at least 1 μm, preferably from 1 to 100 μm, particularly preferably from 5 to 50 μm.
It is also preferred that the copolyesters used as the intermediate layer contain between 5 and 50% by weight of ethylene isophthalate units.
The polyester intermediate and outer layers are co-extruded, biaxially stretched and heat-set by the customary, generally known methods.
The best way to emboss the multilayer film is to bring the film into contact with a structured surface, preferably a roller, under sufficient pressure, the structure of which is then transferred to the three-layer film.
Point-shaped or line-shaped elevations of 5 to 50 μm in height and an average diameter or width of 5 to 20 μm have been found to be suitable structures that are uniformly distributed over the entire length and width of the embossing film. The number of these surveys per mm² should - depending on the diameter / width - be approximately 100 to 25. To create linear elevations, the embossing film can be given a groove-like or wave-like profile, for example in the form of, for example, concentric rings, etc. It is crucial that the total contact area is reduced by pressing in (embossing) surface areas so that a point or surface bearing web-shaped elevations arises. The shape of this embossing plays a subordinate role here.
The cover is expediently applied to the pressure-sensitive, self-adhesive surface by contacting both surfaces. In the case of self-adhesive tapes, the cover is expediently fed to the adhesive tape as a film tape of the same width shortly before it is rolled up on the side provided with adhesive and rolled up together with the adhesive tape.
- a) the entire system is silicone-free,
- b) the cover film can be reused or recycled,
- c) the adhesive force between the self-adhesive carrier and the cover film can be set within wide limits by embossing the cover film accordingly,
- d) the cover film used is high strength.
