Definitions
- the invention relates to a roller applicator for applying coating color to a paper web, according to the preamble of claim 1.
- Rolling applicators of this type are known from DE 36 05 409 A1. This device is intended to produce a uniform stroke.
- the paper web and the coating color it would be desirable for the paper web and the coating color to form a straight line of contact with one another when they are brought together.
- the contact line is not straight, but often tongue-shaped. This applies to roller applicators with a guide body (according to the preamble of claim 1) and therefore also to roller applicators with a free mirror. If there are permanent air pockets that remain over the entire coating zone, the paper web is not wetted by coating color at the relevant points and therefore remains uncoated at these points. Of course, this is highly undesirable.
- the coating color is fed to the inlet gusset and thus to the paper web in sufficient quantity, starting from a necessary minimum quantity up to a maximum quantity.
- the invention has for its object to design a roller applicator according to the preamble of claim 1 such that the disruptive air influences in the inlet gusset are avoided; furthermore, the coating color should be uniform in the flow across the machine width, i.e. run in the machine direction. Cross currents are undesirable. It should be avoided especially in the contact zone (in the inlet gusset). In particular, the line of contact when the paper web and coating color stream meet should be a straight line. Air pockets should be avoided in any case.
- the entire roller applicator can thus have a total of three overflow edges on which ink streams can overflow.
- the size of the first overflow stream, which enters the overflow channel from the trough via the first overflow edge, can be selected as required and, in extreme cases, can approach zero.
- the second overflow stream, ie that which flows over the second overflow edge through the discharge channel, will generally be relatively large. Its size can be adjusted using the valve mentioned.
- the third overflow current - at the throttle point - can go to zero. All of the mentioned overflow flows expediently into a single overflow channel, namely in the said channel which is connected to the first overflow edge.
- a further air scraper can be connected upstream of the guide body, specifically further away from the inlet gusset with respect to the second and the third overflow edge.
- a particularly advantageous solution consists in providing the guide body — seen in a side view — on the side on which the paper web runs into the inlet gusset with a special air guide surface.
- This air guide surface extends from the beginning of the throttle point, which can also form an overflow edge, to the end of the discharge duct. It is preferably concave.
- the air stream arriving with the paper web hits the edge of the air guide surface where it is scraped off. It then follows the concave air guide surface of the guide body. The air flow is deflected by this guide surface and guided to the outlet end of the discharge duct. An ejector effect occurs here.
- the air flow in the manner of a water jet nozzle, tears out the coating color flow that flows in the discharge duct, as well as any air that may still be trapped in the discharge duct.
- the guide body is provided with an air suction channel which begins in the area of the throttle point and which ends in the area of the end of the air guide surface.
- This air suction channel is therefore subject to the ejector effect of the air flow deflected by the air guide surface.
- This airflow vents the air intake duct, and thus also the throttle point, which is thus evacuated.
- This evacuation ensures that residual air quantities that initially penetrate the throttle point are discharged from it before they reach the discharge channel or even further.
- This evacuation is therefore upstream of the discharge channel in order to achieve special security with regard to the freedom from air.
- the advantage is that this evacuation takes place automatically. Their effect is pending with increasing speed, which is of course particularly cheap.
- the roller applicator shown in Figure 1 comprises an applicator roller 1, which rotates in a coating sump 2.
- the coating sump 2 is located in a trough 3.
- the trough 3 has a brush-colored inlet 7.
- the trough wall is designed as a guide wall 8. It ends with an overflow edge 9 ("first overflow edge"). At this point, an overflow channel 10 is connected for a first overflow stream.
- a guide body 20 adjoins the guide wall 8 after the overflow edge 9. This extends to the inlet gusset. It forms a flow channel 21 with the outer surface of the application roller 1. At its downstream end, it forms a second overflow edge 22 for a second overflow stream.
- the guide body 20 has a discharge channel 23. This is used to derive a second overflow current. This current arises from the fact that excess coating color passes over the overflow edge 22 and - through the discharge channel 23 - flows in the flow channel 21 counter to the direction of flow.
- An important idea according to the invention is to make the entire guide body 20 variable in its position.
- a particularly advantageous embodiment consists in making the guide body 20 pivotable, specifically about a pivot point that lies in the region of the overflow edge 22.
- the guide body 20 also has a throttle point 24, which can serve as an overflow edge and then forms the third overflow edge. It also carries an air scraper 25.
- the flow channel 23 is provided with a valve 26 at its downstream end.
- the three overflow streams which overflow at the overflow edges 9, 22 and 24, all open into a single collecting channel, namely the overflow channel 10.
- the coated paper web 5 After passing through the application zone, the coated paper web 5 reaches the outlet gusset. There it passes an equalized rod 30 and finally a doctor blade 31. However, this area is not of primary importance for the present invention.
- the roller applicator according to the invention thus works as follows: when it rotates in the direction of the arrow 6, the applicator roller 1 picks up the coating color from the coating sump 2. There is a flow of the coating color along the guide wall 8 of the trough 3, which continues in flow channel 21. In the application area - in the illustration on the left - there are completely clear and regulated conditions. The entire space between the outer surface of the application roller 1 in its ascending, upper quadrant and the guide body 20 is hermetically sealed. The paper web 5, coming down from the top left when the counter-roller 4 rotates, drags air. However, this air encounters a first air barrier in the form of the air scraper 25. If air overcomes this barrier, it arrives at the overflow edge 24, which represents a further barrier. A last lock is the overflow edge 22 of the guide body 20.
- FIG. 2 shows a roller applicator according to the prior art.
- the basic elements are also present here, namely the application roller 1, the counter roller 4, the trough 3, etc.
- the mirror 40 of the coating swamp In its place is the mirror 40 of the coating swamp. This mirror is exposed to the influence of the masses of air brought in at high speed. The air penetrates the coating slip and passes through the application zone with the paper web and the coating slip. The deletion result is unsatisfactory.
- FIG. 3 The embodiment of a roller applicator according to the invention shown in FIG. 3 has essentially the same elements as the roller applicator according to FIG. 1.
- the special feature, however, is that the guide body 20 has a pointed edge in the space between the outer surface of the application roller 1 and the guide wall 8 of the trough 3 immersed and thus has a current dividing effect.
- the guide body 20 has an air guide surface 26.
- the throttle point 24 is flat, i.e. it extends over a certain part of the circumference of the counter roller 6.
- the surface of the guide body 26 facing the paper web 5 could also have the contour 27 shown in broken lines.
- a ventilation duct 28 is also very crucial. It begins at the throttle point 24 or 27 and ends at the lower end of the air guiding surface 26, and thus also at the lower end of the flow duct 23.
- This embodiment works as follows: When the two rollers rotate, the paper web 5 carries an air stream with it - see arrow 29. This air stream is scraped off at the edge 33 of the guide body 20, guided on the air guide surface 26 and deflected in the process until it reaches the lower one End of the ventilation channel 28 arrives. There, according to the ejector principle, it pulls air out of channel 28, and thus also out of the throttle point 24.
- FIGS. 5 to 14 describe interesting variants that deal with the design of the guide body.
- This guide body forms a flow channel together with the outer surface of the application roller 1.
- the guide body 20 has projections on its side facing the lateral surface of the application roller 1, for example ribs, which extend in the longitudinal direction of the flow and which are arranged in a plurality across the width of the machine.
- ribs which extend in the longitudinal direction of the flow and which are arranged in a plurality across the width of the machine.
- Many individual channels result from this. These can have the shape of a flash, for example, they can expand, they can narrow, or they can be designed in the manner of Venturi nozzles.
Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a roller applicator for applying coating color to a paper web, according to the preamble of
Rolling applicators of this type are known from DE 36 05 409 A1. This device is intended to produce a uniform stroke.
With such roller applicators, problems occur especially in the wedge-shaped inlet zone between the applicator roller and the counter roller, especially at high speeds. This is mainly due to the influence of the air which is brought into the inlet gusset together with the paper web when the counter-roller rotates. It mixes with the coating color at the point where it touches the paper web. At the upper edge of the machine-wide guide body, there is generally an overflow of coating color, namely against the direction of travel of the paper web and against the air flow. If the air flow impinges on this overflow flow, this leads to a partial suppression of the overflow flow and to the mixing of air and coating color. Such disturbances also occur when no guide body is provided and when a free level of the coating slip is consequently established between the outer surface of the application roller and the trough wall.
It would be desirable for the paper web and the coating color to form a straight line of contact with one another when they are brought together. However, due to the influences of the air introduced, the contact line is not straight, but often tongue-shaped.
It is also an important requirement that the coating color is fed to the inlet gusset and thus to the paper web in sufficient quantity, starting from a necessary minimum quantity up to a maximum quantity.
The invention has for its object to design a roller applicator according to the preamble of
This object is solved by the characterizing features of
Demgemäß wird der Leitkörper wie folgt gestaltet:
- (a) Er weist einen Ableitkanal zum Ableiten des zweiten Überlaufstromes auf;
- (b) er bildet zusammen mit der Papierbahn - in Umlaufrichtung der Gegenwalze gesehen vor dem Ableitkanal - eine Drosselstelle, an der eine dritte Überlaufkante für einen dritten Überlaufstrom vorgesehen sein kann;
- (a) It has a discharge channel for discharging the second overflow stream;
- (b) together with the paper web - seen in the direction of rotation of the counter roll in front of the discharge channel - it forms a throttle point at which a third overflow edge can be provided for a third overflow stream;
- (c) the discharge channel is provided with a preferably controllable valve.
These measures ensure that the difficult area of the inlet gusset is under control. A hermetically sealed system is created in this area, in which two barriers, namely the second and the third overflow edge, prevent air from entering the actual application zone with certainty.
The entire roller applicator can thus have a total of three overflow edges on which ink streams can overflow. The size of the first overflow stream, which enters the overflow channel from the trough via the first overflow edge, can be selected as required and, in extreme cases, can approach zero. The second overflow stream, ie that which flows over the second overflow edge through the discharge channel, will generally be relatively large. Its size can be adjusted using the valve mentioned. The third overflow current - at the throttle point - can go to zero. All of the mentioned overflow flows expediently into a single overflow channel, namely in the said channel which is connected to the first overflow edge.
For safety reasons, a further air scraper can be connected upstream of the guide body, specifically further away from the inlet gusset with respect to the second and the third overflow edge.
A particularly advantageous solution consists in providing the guide body — seen in a side view — on the side on which the paper web runs into the inlet gusset with a special air guide surface. This air guide surface extends from the beginning of the throttle point, which can also form an overflow edge, to the end of the discharge duct. It is preferably concave.
This causes the following in detail: The air stream arriving with the paper web hits the edge of the air guide surface where it is scraped off. It then follows the concave air guide surface of the guide body. The air flow is deflected by this guide surface and guided to the outlet end of the discharge duct. An ejector effect occurs here. The air flow, in the manner of a water jet nozzle, tears out the coating color flow that flows in the discharge duct, as well as any air that may still be trapped in the discharge duct.
A particularly advantageous further development of this idea consists in the following:
The guide body is provided with an air suction channel which begins in the area of the throttle point and which ends in the area of the end of the air guide surface. This air suction channel is therefore subject to the ejector effect of the air flow deflected by the air guide surface. This airflow vents the air intake duct, and thus also the throttle point, which is thus evacuated. This ensures that residual air quantities that initially penetrate the throttle point are discharged from it before they reach the discharge channel or even further. This evacuation is therefore upstream of the discharge channel in order to achieve special security with regard to the freedom from air. The advantage is that this evacuation takes place automatically. Their effect is pending with increasing speed, which is of course particularly cheap.

The roller applicator shown in Figure 1 comprises an
The
According to the invention, the
The
The three overflow streams, which overflow at the overflow edges 9, 22 and 24, all open into a single collecting channel, namely the
After passing through the application zone, the
The roller applicator according to the invention thus works as follows: when it rotates in the direction of the
In contrast to this, FIG. 2 shows a roller applicator according to the prior art. The basic elements are also present here, namely the
The embodiment of a roller applicator according to the invention shown in FIG. 3 has essentially the same elements as the roller applicator according to FIG. 1. The special feature, however, is that the
The embodiment according to FIG. 4 is particularly advantageous. Here, the
This embodiment works as follows: When the two rollers rotate, the
