Description

The invention relates to an applicator for applying coating color to a paper web, according to the preamble of claim 1, in particular roller applicator.

Commissioned works of this type have become known from DE-A-36 05 409 A1. This device is intended to produce a uniform stroke.

Es folgt auf den Auslaufzwickel eine Deflektoreinrichtung.GB-A-2 178 677 shows and describes an application work for applying coating color on a paper web. This device works with an application roller and a counter roller assigned to it. An inlet gusset and an outlet gusset are formed between the application roller and the counter roller. A deflector device follows the outlet gusset.

With such applicators, problems occur primarily in the wedge-shaped inlet zone between the applicator roller and the counter roller, particularly at high speeds, but also in the outlet zone before the paper web provided with a coating color reaches the doctor blade. The squeegee has crucial functions to perform. It should help to create a closed, and relatively thick layer that is completely smooth and free of squeegee strips. Different types of squeegees are conceivable, for example with a stiff blade, with a curved blade (bentblade), which in its free end region clings tangentially to the coated paper web and the squeegee. The apperative effort for such doctor devices is very considerable. Nevertheless, the doctoring devices known to date have not met the required demands on the line quality.

The invention has for its object to design a commissioned work according to the preamble of claim 1 such that the line quality is further improved, in particular with regard to smoothness, closedness of the line surface and with regard to the sensitive metering of the line weight, and this with reasonable apperative effort.

This object is solved by the characterizing features of claim 1.

Demgemäß wird im einzelnen folgendes vorgesehen:

  • (a) Zwischen der eigentlichen Auftragszone und der Rakel wird ein Deflektor vorgesehen;
  • (b) der Deflektor umfaßt eine erste Leitfläche zum Ableiten eines ersten Streichfarben-Überschusses aus dem Auslaufzwickel sowie eine zweite Leitfläche für den Rakelüberschuß;
Accordingly, the following is provided in detail:
  • (a) A deflector is provided between the actual application zone and the doctor blade;
  • (b) the deflector comprises a first guide surface for deriving a first excess of coating color from the outlet gusset and a second guide surface for the doctor blade excess;
  • (c) the two guide surfaces are brought together in an end edge at which the two excess currents meet.

These measures ensure that the difficult area of the outlet gusset is better controlled. A pre-doctoring takes place, which in the end results in better line quality, in particular in a higher smoothness of the coating color surface.

The invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawing. The following is shown in detail:
  • Figure 1 shows a roller applicator according to the invention seen in side view.
  • Figure 2 shows a roller applicator according to the prior art.

The roller applicator shown in Figure 1 comprises an applicator roller 1, which rotates in a coating sump 2. The coating sump 2 is located in a trough 3. The application roller 1 is assigned a counter roller 4, which is wrapped in a paper web 5. Both rollers run in opposite directions in the direction of arrows 6, but not at the same peripheral speed (ratio v counter roller : v application roller = 10). Together they form a wedge-shaped inlet gusset - on the left in the illustration - and a wedge-shaped outlet gusset - on the right in the illustration.

The trough 3 has a brush-colored inlet 7. In the ascending area of the application roller 1, the trough wall is designed as a guide wall 8. It ends with an overflow edge 9 ("first overflow edge"). At this point, an overflow channel 10 is connected for a first overflow stream.

A guide body 20 adjoins the guide wall 8 after the overflow edge 9. This extends to the inlet gusset. It forms a flow channel 21 with the lateral surface of the application roller 1. At its downstream end it forms a second overflow edge 22 for a second overflow stream.

The guide body 20 has a discharge channel 23. This is used to derive a second overflow current. This current arises from the fact that excess coating color passes over the overflow edge 22 and - through the discharge channel 23 - flows in the flow channel 21 against the direction of flow.

The guide body 20 also has a throttle point 24, which can serve as an overflow edge and then forms the third overflow edge. It also carries an air scraper 25. The flow channel 23 is provided with a valve 26 at its downstream end.

The three overflow flows, which overflow at the overflow edges 9, 22 and 24, all open into a single collecting channel, namely the overflow channel 10.

After passing through the order zone, the coated paper web 5 gets into the outlet gusset. There it runs past a leveling rod 30 and finally a doctor blade 31. This area is of primary importance for the present invention.

The leveling rod 30 is part of a deflector 40. This deflector has a first guide surface 41 for deriving a first excess of coating color 42 from the outlet gusset, and also a second guide surface 43 for the doctor blade excess 46 which is produced on the doctor blade 31.

The two guide surfaces 41, 43 are brought together in an end edge 44, which in the present case tapers and where the two excess flows 42, 46 meet.

The first guide surface 41 is rigidly concave, the second guide surface 43 is somewhat less strong. The deflector 40 is fastened to the fixed environment by means of brackets 45. The brackets 45 consist of relatively thin plates, which - distributed over the width of the machine - are arranged side by side, leaving gaps.

The leveling rod 30 can be adjusted more or less strongly against the coated paper web 5 by means of an inflatable rubber tube 47.

In the present case, the deflector 40 is suspended from a joint 48 so that it can pivot in the direction of the arrow 49. It can be locked in various angular positions.

In contrast to this, FIG. 2 shows a roller applicator according to the prior art. The basic elements are also present here, namely the application roller 1, the counter roller 4, the trough 3, etc. However, the deflector designed according to the invention is missing.

The two doctor blades, ie the pre-doctor blade 30 as well as the last doctor blade 31, can be designed in different ways. For example, they can be designed as a blade, as a doctor blade or as a smooth rod.
