- the present invention provides a holding device for receiving an externally threaded portion of a shaft or rod member, said device comprising a socket member defining therein a first bore having internal threads for engaging with the external threads of said end portion, and the holding device according to the invention is characterized in that the socket member further defines a second bore having a diameter equal to or slightly exceeding the maximum outer diameter of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member, the axis of the second bore intersecting the axis of the first bore and defining an acute angle therewith so that the externally threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member may be axially inserted into the second bore and thereafter brought into an engaged position in which the external threads of the end portion engages with the internal threads of the first bore, by a tilting movement of the end portion through said angle, provided that the first and second bores are interconnected along the total length thereof and the width of such interconnection permits such tilting movement, for example by having a width being substantially equal to the diameter of the bores.
- the externally threaded end portion may be inserted axially into the second bore which is normally non-threaded. Thereafter, the threaded end portion may be moved into the threaded first bore and engaged with its internal threads by a simple tilting movement through the acute angle. The end portion may be released by tilting the shaft or rod member in the opposite direction whereafter the threaded end portion may be withdrawn axially.
- the holding device preferably comprises means of some kind for releasably retaining the end portion of the shaft or rod member in said engaged position.
- Such means may comprise any type of means which may retain the threaded end portion within the threaded first bore.
- such releasably retaining means may comprise a retractable retaining member which may be moved transversely through the second bore and into engagement with the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member.
- the holding device further comprises an abutment member
- the retaining means may then comprise an abutment surface defined by the abutment member for engaging with a free end of the threaded end portion in its engaged position.
- the socket member may be pivotally mounted on the abutment member, the pivot axis extending substantially diametrically in relation to the first bore.
- the free end of the threaded end portion may then be moved out of engagement with the abutment surface by pivotal movement of the socket member and the threaded end portion received therein in relation to the abutment member. Thereafter, the threaded end portion may be tilted from the threaded first bore into the second bore and be axially removed therefrom.
- the retaining means may comprise releasably locking means for locking the socket and abutment members in a relative position in which the abutment surface extends at substantially right angles to the axis of the threaded first bore.

- the abutment member may further define a peripheral retaining surface extending axially from the circumference of the abutment surface for engaging with a peripheral surface part of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member when the free end of the threaded end portion is in engagement with the abutment surface.
- Such peripheral retaining surface preferably has a maximum peripheral extension of 180 in order to permit release of the firm engagement of the free end of the threaded end portion and the abutment surface by a relative pivotal movement of the socket and abutment members as described above.
- the locking means may comprise a sleeve-like member which is axially displaceable between an interlocking position in which the inner surface of the sleeve-like member engages with complementary cylindrical outer surface parts defined by the abutment member and by the socket member, respectively, and a releasing position in which the sleeve-like member is out of engagement with the socket member. Furthermore, the sleeve-like member may be spring biased towards its interlocking position.
- the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member may be inserted axially into the second bore, while the sleeve-like member is in its interlocking position. Thereafter the threaded end portion is tilted into its engaged position within the first bore and screwed a few times till a firm engagement between the free end of the threaded end portion and the abutment surface is obtained.
- a rotational and/or a percussive movement may be imparted to the shaft or rod member by means of a hammer drill or another driving machine.
- the sleeve-like member When the shaft or rod member is in the desired positions the sleeve-like member may be retracted to its releasing position against the spring bias so as to permit a relative pivotal movement of the abutment and socket members in order to release the firm engagement between the abutment surface and the free end of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member. Thereafter, the threaded end portion may be tilted into the second, non-threaded bore and retracted axially therefrom.
- the holding device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a body member 10 having a shaft 11 and an abutment member 12 formed integrally therewith at opposite ends.
- the free end of the shaft 11 may have channels and/or recesses 13 formed therein so that the shaft 11 may be received in a chuck 14 of a driving machine, such as a hammer drilling machine, not shown.
- the holding device further comprises a cylindrical socket member 15 having a central, axial threaded bore 16 formed therein.
- a non-threaded bore 17 having substantially the same diameter as the threaded bore 16 is also formed in the socket member 15.
- the longitudinal axis 18 of the non-threaded bore 17 intersects the longitudinal axis 19 of the central, threaded bore 16 and defines an acute angle "a" therewith as shown in Fig. 1.
- the socket member 15 is pivotally mounted on the abutment member 12 by means of a pivot pin 20, which extends substantially at right angles to a plane defined by the axes 18 and 19 of the bores 17 and 16, respectively, and which intersects the central axis 19 of the threaded bore 16.
- a rim portion or flange portion 22 extends axially from the semi-circular periphery of the abutment surface 21.
- the abutment member 12 has an inclined surface part 23.
- a sleeve-like locking member 24 having an outer knurled surface part 25 is positioned around the abutment member 12 and may be moved axially in relation thereto.
- the sleeve-like locking member 24 has an inner, radially extending flange 26, and a coiled spring or helical spring 27 is arranged in a space defined by the outer surface of the body member 10 and the inner surface of the locking member 24, and the opposite ends of the spring 27 are engaging with oppositely directed annular abutment surfaces defined by the inner flange 26 of the locking member 24 and by a cylindrical outer enlargement 28 forming an integral part of the body member 10.
- the outer cylindrical surfaces of the socket member 15 and of the enlargement 28 correspond substantially to the inner cylindrical surface of the sleeve-like locking member 24 so as to define a loose fit permitting axial movement of the sleeve-like locking member 24 in relation to the body member 10 and the socket member 15 under the bias of the spring 27.
- one end portion of the threaded rod member or the screw member 29 may be inserted axially into the non-threaded bore 17, and the outer threads of the rod member 29 may thereafter be brought into engagement with the internal threads of the central bore 16 as shown in Fig. 4 by a tilting movement through the acute angle "a", so that the longitudinal axis of the threaded rod member 29 is coinciding with the axis of the socket member 15 and of the shaft 11.
- the threaded rod member 29 is now screwed further into the threaded bore 16 till the end surface of the rod member 29 comes into engagement with the abutment surface 21.
- a breakable capsule 32 (Fig. 5) containing a rapidly hardening adhesive or glue may now be positioned within the drilled hole 30.
- a rotational and/or percussive movement maybe imparted to the threaded rod member 29 which is thereby screwed and/or hammered into the hole or bore 30.
- the inner end of the threaded rod member 29 will then crush the capsule 32 so that the adhesive material 33 contained therein is thoroughly mixed and forced to fill substantially all spaces defined between the inner surface of the hole or bore 30 and the outer surface of the threaded rod member 20. Possible surplus of adhesive material may form an annular bead at the opening of the hole 30 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
- the threaded rod member 29 may now be released from the holding device by retracting the sleeve-like locking member 24 from engagement with the outer peripheral surface of the socket member 25 and against the bias of the spring 27 and by rotating the body member 10 through a small acute angle about the pivot pin 20 as shown in Fig.
- the holding device shown in the drawings and described above renders it possible to mount one end portion of a rod member or screw member 29 in the threaded bore 16 of the socket member very easily and quickly. Furthermore, when the threaded rod member 29 has been mounted it may be released rather quickly by tilting the body member 10 in relation to the socket member 15 and by subsequently tilting the socket member 15 in relation to the threaded rod member 29. Thus, the holding device may be released from the threaded rod member 29 without imparting any substantial axial or rotative forces thereto.
- the holding device according to the invention may be used in any situation where a threaded end portion of any member, such as a tool or implement should be firmly gripped.
- the holding device according to the invention could be used for screwing stay screws into the threaded bores.
