La présente invention se rapporte à une matière jetable dans l'eau, caractérisée par le fait qu'elle comprend un substrat immédiatement soluble et/ou désintégré dans l'eau, lequel substrat est revêtu, ou protégé de l'eau de façon différente, par une couche de surface constituée d'une matière immédiatement soluble et/ou désintégrable dans l'eau quand elle est exposée à un pH sensiblement différent de celui auquel elle est exposée en utilisation normale. Le substrat est, de préférence, un polymère d'alcool polyvinylique soluble dans l'eau et le revêtement de surface est un polymère acrylique sensible à l'alcali. Cette matière peut s'utiliser pour la fabrication de couches et d'autres articles absorbants à porter au contact de la peau, qu'on peut jeter dans les toilettes dans lesquelles on ajoute un alcali pour porter le pH de l'eau à une valeur supérieure à celle du pH humain en utilisation.
