  • This invention relates to a press closure for the mouth of a bag and more particularly to a slide closure comprising a first elongate strip having a longitudinally extending channel and a second elongate strip having a longitudinally extending profile adapted to interlockingly engage within the channel.
  • Each said strip is secured to the respective internal surface at the open mouth of a bag and by a sliding action the profile may be engaged with the channel so as to close the mouth, which may thereafter be reopened by pulling apart the mouth of the bag so as to disengage the profile from the channel.
  • strips may have to be attached by means of an adhesive or alternatively the second strips are attached by an adhesive to either the bag or the first strips, with the second strips being of a material which is capable of fusion welding to the second strips or the bag respectively.
  • the elongate strip When a second strip is used to effect the heat fusion then the elongate strip is required to have a thickness of at least 150 mu in order to prevent melting during the fusion process. This then increases the overall thickness of slide closure making it more difficult to satisfactorily fusion weld the closure assembly to the bag.

  • the method of applying a suitable adhesive bonding agent to the second strip is time consuming and difficult to control as far as quality is concerned.
  • a press closure for the mouth of a bag comprising a first elongate strip provided with an integral channel and a second elongate strip provided with a profiled rib with the rib and channel forming an interlocking engagement means characterised by a coating of adhesive or bonding agent on each elongate strip, said adhesive or bonding agent being overlaid with a releasable protective backing sheet.
  • a press closure generally indicated by reference 1 has a first elongate strip 2' with an integral longitudinally extending channel 3'.
  • a second elongate strip 2 includes an integral longitudinally extending rib profile 3.
  • the profile of the rib 3 is arranged so that it may interlockingly engage the channel 3' and such engagement may be effected by a sliding action commencing from one end towards the other. By such an action the channel and the profile are progressively brought into engagement.
  • Each elongate strip 2 and 2' has bonded thereto a second nylon strip 4, 4' which is coated with a bonding agent or adhesive medium 5, 5'.
  • the bonding agent 5, 5' is overlaid with a releasable backing sheet such as of paper 6, 6'.
  • the press or slide closure assembly 1 is wound into the form of a reel 7, as shown in Figure 2, with the rib profile 3 engaged with the channel 3'.
  • the closure 1 is unrolled and the protective paper strips 6 and 6' are peeled from the assembly and thereafter the film 8, 8' which is to form the sides of the bag is fed over the sides coated with the bonding agent 5 and 5' and pressed into firm contact with the strip by means of rollers 9, 9'.
  • Figure 3 shows a bag 10 which has been formed by the aforementioned method wherein the elongate strips 2, 3 and 2', 3' have been firmly bonded to the inside of the mouth 11.
  • the bag has been formed into discrete units for example by applying a heat sealing process transversely to provide side welds 12, 12'.
  • the bonding agent to be used (5, 5') may be a self adhesive material, a pressure contact adhesive, a chemically activated bonding agent or adhesive, or a heat or pressure activated adhesive.
