  • the conventional apparatuses for drying solid/liquid materials typically operate with a rotary drying drum where the material to be dried is dried using hot combustion air coming from a burner. At the outlet of the drum, the dried solid part of the solid/liquid material is separated and the air/vapor/dust-mixture is purified via cyclones, gas scrubbers, afterburners and the like, so that the air/vapor/dust-mixture discharged into the atmosphere satisfies the current environmental requirements.

  • the part of the air/vapor/dust-mixture that is passed to the solid-matter burner must not contain too much vapor because then the burner does not function properly.
  • the water released by condensation in the gas scrubbers contains heavy metals and other contaminants. Therefore, this contaminated water cannot be discharged into the environment and must be purified. Purification of water containing the above-mentioned contaminants can only be realized at very high costs in complex and costly apparatus.

  • a lime filter downstream from the secondary circuit of the heat exchanger for purifying the combustion gases of the burner, so that the heavy metals and other contaminants which are present in the combustion gases do not end up in the atmosphere.

  • the mixture is heated, so that the relative humidity of the mixture diminishes and the mixture can absorb moisture again and hence serve as a drying medium. From the heat exchanger 6 the heated mixture is returned to the drying drum 1.
  • a part of the air/vapor/dust-mixture, corresponding with the amount of gas, vapor and dust that is released during drying of the solid/liquid material plus an amount of leakage air which has entered the drying drum via the solid/liquid material is passed into duct 7 via the control valve 4. From there it passes to a heat exchanger 8, where it is heated by the combustion gases of a burner 9, and is subsequently passed to the gas or oil burner 9, where it is burned as secondary air.
  • the dust particles and the odorous gases released during the drying process are burned.
  • the combustion gases are passed via the heat exchanger 6, where the combustion gases heat the recirculated air/vapor/dust-mixture in duct 5, and then via heat exchanger 8, where the combustion gases heat the air/vapor/dust-mixture in duct 7, to a lime filter 10, where the heavy metals and other contaminants are removed from the combustion gases before they are discharged into the atmosphere, for instance via a stack 11.
  • the gas or oil burner 9 is supplied with primary air via a fan 12.
