Abstract

A transfer sheet is used for transferring an image formed by electrostatic copying to a backing of textile fabric or other porous material. The transfer sheet is composed of a plain paper substrate having no release treatment or coating applied thereto, and a transfer coating of thermoplastic polymeric film material bonded to the substrate. Transfer of the image is accomplished using only the single transfer sheet. The plain paper substrate securely retains the polymeric film coating during electrostatic imprinting and avoids contamination of the copier/printer. The image can be transferred to a textile backing by applying heat of about 160° C. and 200° C. and pressure of about 50 psi for a duration of about 5 to 10 seconds, and results in a high-quality image transfer that leaves the fabric weave open to breathe. The plain paper substrate is removed after image transfer by peeling it away from the backing while still hot.

Description

The invention relates to a method (see claims 1-4) for transferring representations such as motifs, characters and the like onto a flat base with a porous surface such as textile material, the representation on a paper having a coating (see claims 5- 8) transferred by dry copying and applied to the base by means of heat at a temperature in the range of 160 ° C <T <200 ° C.

In order to transfer motifs from newspapers, personal images or the like to in particular textile goods such as T-shirts, it is known that a paper consisting of a siliconized backing paper and a laminated rubber foil is placed on an imperatively printed template with a non-refined surface to iron the paper onto the original. The template with the ironed paper is then placed in a warm, soapy solution to remove the paper. The template has been transferred to the rubber sheet. Another paper of the same structure is then placed on the intermediate product thus obtained in order to transfer the intermediate product onto the paper by ironing on. The backing paper is removed from the still hot intermediate product. Finally, the intermediate product with the ironed-on rubber sheet is ironed onto the textile base, and then the Remove the backing paper from the textile base.

A corresponding method is not only complex, but also has the disadvantage that not every template can be used to be transferred to a textile base. In addition, there is an end product that feels like a foreign body on the textile base because the transferred template is rubber-like.

From the publication "XEROX DISCLOSURE JOURNAL, Volume 5, November 3, May / June 1980", a method of the type mentioned is known, in which a release paper is used as paper, which is pulled off from the base in a cold state. Due to the paper, the layer containing the copied image is also transferred, so that this changes the properties of the base, particularly when it is textile.

A 87/04393 and DE-A 34 22 286 show methods for printing on materials, computers or television cameras being used as aids or images of an intermediate beam can be ironed onto a base.

The object of the present invention is to develop a method of the type mentioned at the outset such that any template can be transferred to a base, the end product obtained being intended to be an integral part of the base, ie its properties are not changed.

The object is achieved in that the base is placed on a non-heated lower die of a hot press on which the LDPE (LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE) is used as a coating a weight of approximately 50 g / m² paper is placed on the support with the representation, which in turn is transferred to the support by means of a pressure of at least 34.475 · 10⁴ N / m² (50 psi) while being exposed to heat at the temperature T, and that after transferring the representation to the base, the still heated paper is removed from the base.

According to the invention, any template is copied onto the paper using the dry process, in order then to transfer the image directly, without further intermediate steps, by means of pressure and heat to the textile base in particular, which is a fabric such as cotton, cotton blend fabric, synthetic fabric, with a complete penetration into the fibers are done. As a result, the print "embossed" on the textile base is not a foreign body, as is the case with the known method on which the transferred original acts like a rubber.

Other flat, flat objects with a porous surface such as leather, wood such as plywood or the like can also be used as a base.

The method according to the invention enables any template to be transferred to a base without the template itself having to be changed in any way. As a result, any number of documents can be provided with the corresponding illustrations from the same template. As a result, series of products can be provided with representations of the same template, which, according to the prior art, would basically only be possible using the screen printing process, that is to say a costly production process. The templates transferred by the method according to the invention are more structure-filling than in screen printing, so that there is consequently a higher quality.

When using copiers with enlargement or reduction options, there is the possibility of a change in size between the originals and the end product. Photomontages are also possible.

In one embodiment, the paper is cut to fit the outline of the depicted illustration before being placed on the base, in order to actually only transfer the image.

According to a proposal of our own, it is provided that the paper consists of a one-sided coated backing paper with a weight of about 90 g / m2, that the backing paper has a high proportion of long-fiber pulp in about 50% to 80% of the total amount of fibers and that on the backing paper a layer of a weight of approximately 50 g / m 2 is applied, the layer consisting of or containing a mixture of LDPE.

Ausgestaltungen ergeben sich aus den Unteransprüchen.Refinements result from the subclaims.

Further details, advantages and features of the invention result from the following description of a preferred exemplary embodiment.

A sheet of paper is placed in a dry copier, which is made from a 90 g / m2 heavy-weight coated carrier paper with an extrusion-coated layer weighing approximately 50 g / m2 an LDPE mixture. A representation, such as a poster, a picture or the like, is placed on the copier glass plate. The representation is then xerographically transferred to the paper, which representation can of course be black and white or colored. If necessary, taking the enlargements or reductions into account, the depicted image is on the paper and can be individually designed by adjusting the brightness or color corrections.

A hot press is used to transfer the image onto a textile base. Before this, the paper can be cut to size as shown. On the non-heated lower stamp, which has a hard foam layer, a textile surface is placed on which the representation is to be transferred. Of course, the page on which the representation is to be "printed" is turned towards the upper stamp. The paper with the image to be transferred is then placed on the base. The upper punch of the hot press is heated to a temperature of preferably 180 °. The hot press is then closed and a pressing time of about 10 seconds is waited for at high pressure (at least 50 psi). After opening the press, the backing paper is removed, which is still hot. The finished end product is then removed. The transferred representation feels like an integral part of the textile underlay, since the image has completely penetrated the fibers of the textile fabric.

When transferring smaller representations of the size of e.g. 15 cm x 20 cm an iron can also be used, whereby the previously described process steps must be followed.
