Definitions
- This invention relates to a device for dispensing the ink used in offset printing machines.
- the ink quantity must be regulated in accordance with the rate of operation of the printing machine.
- printing machines are provided with a plurality of mutually cooperating vibration rollers and inking rollers which cause a uniform ink film to flow to the printing cylinder and hence onto said support on which to print.
- the ink reaches the vibration rollers and inking rollers from a feed roller with which a container known as an ink duct is associated to collect the ink.
- the quantity of ink transferred is regulated by increasing or reducing the distance between the cylindrical surface of the feed roller and a mobile part of a device associated with the ink duct and grazing the roller itself. In this manner that quantity of ink which is in excess over the required quantity is scraped off.
- the useful ink quantity must be varied according to the properties of the print regions, so that said devices must be able to adjust the distance between the ink duct and the feed roller surface so that it differs along the print width, ie in the direction of the length of the feed roller.
- the first type are provided in the part adjacent to the feed roller with side-by-side mobile elements (inserts) which can be made to approach or move away from the roller by adjustment mechanisms.
- side-by-side mobile elements inserts
- the second type or continuous blade ink duct is provided with a small-thickness blade located in proximity to the feed roller and operated by tie members which cause it to bend in those various regions in which a variation in the distance between the blade and the feed roller grazed by it is required.
- the gap between the blade and feed roller varies in width, to directly influence the quantity of ink which remains attached to the roller in that certain region having the thickness of the film not scraped away.
- said distances which define the thickness of the ink film transferred to the feed roller are adjusted by usual manually operated male-female screw combinations.
- the said adjustment device is separate from the vessel containing the ink and is associated with it in a manner which gives the overall arrangement poor rigidity.
- the blades (whole or divided into segments) of the scraper device are positioned such that when the ink duct is changed to change the print colour they can accidentally hit against the feed roller, to result in mutual damage.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a device for regulating the ink film thickness which offers greater accuracy in operation.
- a further object is to provide a regulating device which is integral with the ink duct structure so as to provide flexo-torsional indeformability, and thus effect its regulatory movements with precision.
- a further object is to provide a ink duct which can be mounted to the rear of the feed roller in a manner which provides reliable protection against damage resulting from jamming between the roller and the elements (blade or inserts) designed to level the ink on the roller surface.
- an ink duct for the feed rollers of offset printing machines comprising a structure with a high degree of flexo-torsional indeformability and preferably monobloc, to be combined with a device incorporating levelling inserts for regulating the thickness of the ink film transferred by the feed roller, to make the operations involved in said regulation more reliable.
- the ink duct is provided with an adjustment device incorporating levelling inserts operated by motor means acting via angular velocity reduction units, to amplify the operating movement and so define its extent more clearly.
- the ink duct is provided with levelling inserts which derive their axial regulating movement from a male-female screw combination in differential engagement .
- the ink duct is provided with levelling inserts operated by mutually engaged regulating screws preloaded by elastic means to eliminate any axial engagement slack.
- the ink duct is provided with lateral shoulders 3 with their ends 3A of anti-friction material and shaped conjugately with the circularity of the feed roller, so that it can rest on it without any possibility existing of contact between its levelling inserts and the cylindrical surface of said feed roller during installation on the offset printing machine.
- the conjugate ends 3A are provided with a rubber doctor blade 3B arranged obliquely (Figure 1) to scrape the cylindrical edges of the feed roller for cleaning purposes, in order to convey the collected ink into the ink duct and add it to other ink R contained in it.
- an ink duct 1 is formed by associating a monobloc structure 2 of considerable flexo-torsional rigidity with two side plates 3 (of which only one is shown). The ink is retained by cooperation with the cylindrical surface 4 of a feed roller 5.
- the perfect seal between the side walls 3 of the monobloc structure 2 and the cylindrical surface of the feed roller 5 derives from the perfect engagement between the parts, of which the side walls 3 are fixed and the feed roller 5 rotates.
- the ink seal between the end 6 of the monobloc structure and the cylindrical surface 4 of the feed roller 5 is provided by a plurality of inserts 7A, 7B, 7C...( Figure 3) arranged side by side to form a blade 8 which grazes said cylindrical surface 4.
- This grazing takes place with a variable distance between the segmented blade and the cylindrical surface, with the formation of gaps 9A, 9B, 9C through which the ink can remain in contact with the rotary surface 4 of the feed roller 5.
- the size of these distances or gaps 9A, 9B, 9C therefore determines the quantity of ink which certain portions of feed roller can transfer to other vibration rollers and/or inking rollers of the offset printing machine.
- the portions of feed roller 5 to which these specific quantities relate are the portions 4A, 4B, 4C facing the corresponding inserts 7A, 7B, 7C...
- the present invention uses very amplified rotary controls for the screws which move the inserts. This result is obtained by using micro- electric motors 10 associated with reduction gears 11 driving a shaft 12 connected to a screw operating device ( Figure 2).
- This expedient consists of a further reduction in the axial movement resulting from rotation of the drive shaft 12, obtained by using a differential screw device instead of a simple lead screw plus nut.
- this revolution of the screw (composed of the portions 13A and 13B) has caused the sleeve 14 to move axially in one direction through 1.25 mm while at the same time causing it to move in the opposite direction through 1 mm.
- the sleeve 14 is fixed rotationally relative to the fixed structure by a key element in the form of the end of a bolt 15 or the like, which acts in an outer longitudinal slot 16 in the sleeve 14.
- the head 17A of a push rod 17 is in contact with the end 14A of the sleeve 14 and is urged against it by a spring 18 the other end of which acts against a ledge 19 on the fixed monobloc structure 2 of the ink duct 1, with the result that the push rod 17 receives said axial movements caused by the spring 18.
- each position of the push rod 17 is related directly to the position of the adjustment insert 7.
- the inserts 7 rest lowerly via rubber gaskets on a solid sub-structure 2A fixed by bolts (shown dashed in Figure 2).
- the effective support is provided not so much by said lower gaskets comprising the long rubber strips 22A but rather by inverted T-shaped metal elements 24 ( Figures 2, 3) which engage via their crosspieces 24A and 24B against recessed surfaces 25 and are fixed by two screws 26.
- the spring 18 presses against the underside of the head 17A of the push rod 17, so tending to withdraw its own insert 7 from the surface 4 of the feed roller 5.
- This withdrawal is however limited by the presence of the end of the sleeve 14, which is retained axially by the composite screw 13A-13B by being engaged by the portion 13B, the other portion 13A engaging in the bush 21 fixed to the monobloc structure of the ink duct by usual bolts 24.
- By operating the double screw 13A-13B a differential movement of the end 14A of the sleeve 14 is obtained, with corresponding axial movement of the insert 7 by the push rod 17, either in the sense of approaching or withdrawing from the surface 4.
