Definitions
- the invention relates to a breaking chamber for a low voltage circuit breaker with molded housing, comprising a stack of conductive plates for cooling and extinguishing the arc.
- breaking chambers with deionization plates has become widespread in low-voltage circuit-breakers with molded casings, for extinguishing a fault or short-circuit arc.
- the performance of the chamber is essentially determined by the capacity for absorbing thermal energy, which capacity can be increased by increasing the volume of the chamber and / or the number of sheets. The space requirement can become excessive during high performance.
- a similar problem arises for a range of circuit breakers, some of which have a high breaking capacity. It is interesting to keep the standard structure of the circuit breaker for the whole range and to increase the breaking capacity by adapting certain parts, in particular the breaking chamber for high performance devices.
- the object of the present invention is to produce a breaking chamber with high thermal capacity, and this chamber is characterized in that it comprises plates made of a sintered material, consisting of a refractory material based on tungsten or molybdenum, and another based on copper or silver.
- the usual separators or sheets have a melting temperature of around 1500 ° C, which is quickly reached, and the iron droplets disperse in the chamber where they solidify again, creating protuberances.
- the melting temperature of tungsten is notably higher and close to 3400 ° C, while the evaporation temperature of copper is around 2600 ° C.
- the chambers according to the invention it has been observed, during a high thermal stress, due to the breaking of a short-circuit current important, an evaporation of copper with a strong absorption of energy, and this vapor follows the gas flow, without dispersing in the device. To this energy absorption effect is added that of the strong thermal conduction of the sintered material, almost three times that of iron, which contributes to the evacuation of heat. The thermal capacity of the room is thus multiplied by 4 or 5 without increasing the size.
- the material may be sintered or be an alloy, for example of tungsten and copper, or of plasma-coated copper of tungsten or molybdenum.
- the sintered material may also contain nickel. Similar performances are obtained in a hybrid chamber, of which only the most stressed plates, towards the center of the chamber, are in the inventive sintered material, the others being standard plates in sheet metal.
- each plate 10,11,12,13 is arranged in parallel with small spacing between two insulating supports 14,15.
- the plates 10-13 are made of a conductive material and an arc 18 drawn during the separation of the contacts 16,17 is moved by any appropriate means, in particular electromagnetic or electrodynamic, towards the chamber where it enters between the plates 10-13 in subdividing into arc sections which cools in contact with the plates.
- Such chambers are well known to specialists.
- all of the plates 10-13 or at least the most stressed central plates 11,12 are made of a sintered material, the others 10,13 being for example of steel.
- the sintered material is based on tungsten and copper, with possibly an addition of nickel.
- the refractory material, tungsten can be replaced by molybdenum and as a binder can be used, instead of copper, silver or iron. Sintering techniques are well known and need not be described.
- a composition containing 60% by weight of tungsten and 40% of copper has given remarkable performance, the percentage of tungsten advantageously being between 80 and 40 and that of copper between 20 and 60.
- Such a chamber can be incorporated in a standard circuit breaker in place of the usual sheet metal chamber, to increase the breaking capacity of this circuit breaker.
- the material may be a composite of a refractory material and a material with a lower evaporation temperature reached by an intense arc. Plates made of a mixture of tungsten and copper can be used or copper plates coated with a layer of tungsten by plasma spray.

Abstract
<IMAGE>
