Abstract

The invention relates to the structure and glazing of a glass roof or a glass facade which are designed in order to take advantage of the architectural qualities of the external adhered glazing and the behaviour and durability qualities of the respirating isolation glazing. The isolation glazing is comprised of an external glass (3) which is adhered to a frame (1) and an internal glass (4) which is made integral with the frame (1) by means of a water vapor permeable seal (5). The isolation glazing thus formed is punctually or continuously integral with the bearing structure by means of an H-shaped seal (8) of which the major part is inserted in the thickness of the glazing. The sealing between adjacent glazings is provided by means of a continuous U-shaped seal (13) completed or not by an elastomer seal (14) cast in situ between the external glasses. The assembly thus implemented forms at the periphery of the glasses a channel (B) containing outside air and a channel (C) for draining any water infiltration.

Description

The construction of glass facades and glass roofs made, either for aesthetic reasons or for ease of maintenance, more and more often use the technique known as bonded exterior glazing (VEC). In the case of insulating canopies, the most frequently used glazing is an insulating glazing comprising at its periphery an assembly joint that is impermeable to water vapor to contain and maintain between two windows a layer of dehydrated air and to exclude risks of condensation on the internal faces of the windows. The minimum conditions of implementation of this type of glazing according to the VEC technique lead to provisions, of the frame which supports them and of their sealed junction, which take away from the process a large part of its aesthetic quality. Furthermore, this type of structure is most often supported by a light structure, the deformability of which leads to glazing stresses incompatible with the durability, by nature already limited, of gastight seals, and consequently, the durability of the insulating glass itself.

A more recent technique from CSTB (Center Scientifique et Technique du Batiment) studies and called breathable insulating glass excludes the drawbacks specific to water vapor tight insulating glass.

The present invention relates to a combination of techniques, insulating breathable glazing, and glued exterior glazing, within the framework of the construction of glass facades and roofs, suitable for: increasing the durability of this type of structure, reducing - or even remove - the bulk of the supporting structure of the glazing on the underside thereof, to allow the interposition of a sunbreaker between the two windows of the insulating glazing, and, for equal thickness of the glass products used , to increase the performance of the structure in terms of sound insulation.

To achieve these results, according to a first arrangement of the invention, the insulating glazing consists of the assembly of two windows, or any other product of the same use, on either side of a profiled, metallic or other, of such dimensions and mechanical characteristics, that it constitutes with the exterior glass to which it is secured by gluing, an assembly capable of transferring the exterior loads applied to the glazing on specific supports located at each of its four angles. In the case where one - or even both - dimensions of the glazing would lead to a height of the profile incompatible with the insulating function of the air space, the point supports may be replaced by continuous supports.

According to a second arrangement of the invention, the interior glass of the insulating glazing may be secured to the intermediate frame by an adhesive seal on its two faces, made of cellular foam permeable to water vapor, or any other material of the same use. In this case, the migration of water vapor to the outside, which constitutes the operating principle of the breathable insulating glazing, will take place through this peripheral seal.

The interior window can also be secured to the frame by other means, and in particular by gluing, over all or part of its periphery. This arrangement will, in the case of exceptional glazing loads or dimensions for example, significantly increase the mechanical characteristics of the product. In this case, the migration of water vapor may require the addition of holes in the frame wall fitted with dust filters.

According to a third arrangement of the invention, the profile constituting the frame will have a general U-shape. The wing of this U located towards the outside will constitute the bonding face of the exterior glass. The wing located inwards will be used for securing, temporarily or continuously, the insulating glazing to the load-bearing structure of the canopy.

According to a fourth arrangement of the invention, the outer wing of the profile constituting the frame will comprise the means of attachment - a groove for example - of a polychloroprene or other material of the same use. This U-shaped joint, made of a continuous mesh, will ensure a watertight connection between the adjacent panes. Depending on the position of the glazing, this seal will constitute either the first sealing barrier - in the case of vertical glazing, for example - or the secondary barrier if an elastomeric seal is cast in situ between the exterior windows to form a smooth and continuous face, or between the intermediate frames or the bonding blocks of the exterior windows if a hollow joint is preferred.

The insulating glazing is secured to the supporting structure, according to another arrangement of the invention, by means of a polychloroprene or other material of the same use, H-shaped seal. The interior glass, the seal by which it is secured to the intermediate frame as well as the inner wing of this same frame will be maintained between the wings of the H-joint. To do this, the part of the H-joint facing outward will include a removable key allowing rotation at 90 ° to each of the half-wings of the H so that the glazing can be introduced between them or, on the contrary, the H-joint itself can be introduced between two glazings already used. The H-shaped joint will have on its face turned inward the means for securing it to the supports, punctual or continuous, of the support structure, - anchoring studs in the grooves of an aluminum alloy profile for example - . The polychloroprene seal can be replaced by two profiles - metallic for example - assembled to form the H shape of the previous one and fitted with seals to assume all of its functions.

According to a final arrangement of the invention, the channels located between the U-shaped outer seal and the H-shaped seal remain open on the upper and lower edges of the facade so that it is established - naturally or with the 'assistance by appropriate mechanical means - at the periphery of each of the glazings, an external air flow capable of absorbing the excess water vapor migrating from the air space contained between the windows.

The attached drawings represent, by way of non-limiting example, an embodiment of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective, seen from the interior of the building, of a canopy whose glazing is carried punctually by the structure.

Figure 2 is a perspective, seen from inside the building, of a canopy whose glazing is carried by continuous and parallel supports.

Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the junction between two juxtaposed glazing, to the right of a continuous support, showing the different ways of making the outer seal, according to the architectural prescription.

Figure 4 is a vertical section on the junction between two superimposed panes.

Figure 5 is a section similar to the previous to the right of the wedging device of the inner glass.

Figure 6 is a section similar to the previous to the right of the wedging device of the intermediate frame of the insulating glazing.

Firstly, we see on these drawings the constituents of the insulating glazing proper, and in particular:
  • the aluminum profile intermediate frame (1) secured by the high-modulus silicone bonding joint (2) to the exterior glass (3),
  • the inner glass (4) secured by the cellular foam seal (5) to the intermediate frame (1), and the dust filter (6) used in the case where the seal (5) is not sufficiently permeable with steam,
  • the vertical setting members (7) of the inner glass (4) relative to the intermediate frame (1).

The insulating glass thus formed is delivered as is to the construction site.

The same drawings show how the water vapor contained in the air space (A) migrates through the seal (5) or the filter (6) to ensure equilibrium with the external air flow circulating in the channel peripheral (B).

The drawings also show:
  • the H-shaped seal (8) fixed on the supports (9), here continuous, of the supporting structure and its key (10) for locking the fixing of the insulating glazing,
  • the H-shaped seal (11) used in the case where the intermediate frame (1) is self-supporting between point supports,
  • the vertical wedging device (12), of the insulating glazing proper on the supporting structure. The insulating glazing is here first placed on its lateral supports and then secured to them by the installation of the key (10) of the seal (8). The next step is to install the seal (11) between the self-supporting sides of the insulating glass.

The drawings also show the different forms of the watertight connection of the exterior windows which use the mesh formed from the U-shaped joint (13) which, as the case may be:
  • either the first sealing barrier,
  • either the channel (C) for drainage of accidental water infiltration by the elastomer seal (14) cast in situ on a cell seal bottom (15).

We see to conclude:
  • that in order to satisfy the first objective, the entire support, ventilation and drainage device for the canopy fits within the very thickness of the insulating glazing and considerably reduces its bulk,
  • that the height of the air gap included between the windows gives the insulating glass, and all other things being equal, the best performance in terms of sound insulation and allows the integration of a sunshade which will thus be removed from assaults from both outside and inside.
  • that the aesthetic qualities of the glued exterior glazing are exploited without any concession due to both the small footprint of the structure and the elimination of the usual spacer joint adjoining the adhesive mass of the exterior glass.
  • that no parasitic stress is likely to compromise the durability of the structure.
