  • the flexible film 31 is taut and is preferably of a clear plastic material. Suitable materials include polyester, nylon, polyethylene and the like. The materials may be monolayered or multilayered, but preferably multilayered.
  • the flexible film is attached to the base tray 12 at the peripheral and internal flanges 33 and 34 so as to airtightly seal compartments containing foodstuff, preferably in a taut condition.
  • the attachment at the flanges may be by any suitable sealing technique such as heat seal, glues, ultrasonic, etc.
  • the foodstuff 37a may include meat, such as poultry, red meats, fish, etc. These types of materials generally absorb carbon dioxide.
  • the volume of the foodstuff within each compartment may be such that the headspace, that is, the free space between the foodstuff and the flexible film 31 is preferably 20 percent to 90 percent and preferably between 40 percent and 75 percent.
  • the foodstuff containing compartment 37a is flushed with a gas atmosphere, preferably such that the carbon dioxide content of the gas is at least 10 percent by volume and preferably 50 percent by volume. Suitable gas flushing techniques are employed.
  • Figures 11 through 19 illustrate another embodiment of the invention.
  • This package is of a different overall shape, being an elongated rectangle rather than square, and includes a larger number and different arrangement of recessed compartments in the base tray and correspondingly a different arrangement of openings in the top of the outer enclosure component for visualization of the food products or the like within the recessed compartments of the base tray.

Claims (10)

  1. Emballage alimentaire (10; 110) comprenant :
    - a) un plateau support (12; 112) en matériau plastique rigide présentant au moins trois compartiments (35 à 37; 50 à 56), chaque compartiment présentant des parois latérales, le plateau support présentant des rebords périphériques (33; 133) et intérieurs (34; 134), tous les rebords étant situés dans un plan de référence, les compartiments étant définis par des parois latérales s'étendant vers le bas depuis les rebords, sur une distance d'au moins 8,9 mm (0,35 pouce), les rebords étant dotés d'une largeur suffisante pour permettre le scellage de façon étanche à l'air d'un film flexible sur eux et au moins l'un des compartiments étant nettoyé avec du gaz et contenant un produit alimentaire (37a; 137a) consistant en de la viande, du poisson ou de la volaille ; et
    - b) un film flexible clair (31; 131) imperméable, situé dans le plan de référence lié aux rebords et formant un joint d'étanchéité à l'air, au moins par rapport au ou aux compartiments nettoyés avec du gaz ; caractérisé par :
    - c) un composant de fermeture extérieure (11; 11) présentant une face supérieure sensiblement plane (13; 113) qui est située de façon immédiatement adjacente au plan de référence, une face inférieure (21; 121) et une pluralité de côtés (17 à 20; 117 à 120), chacun de ces côtés recouvrant au moins une partie d'un côté du plateau support en matériau plastique rigide et la face supérieure du composant de fermeture extérieure étant essentiellement opaque, excepté pour au moins une ouverture (14 à 16; 114 à 116) ménagée en son sein; et en ce que :
    - d) le film flexible est un film à couches multiples.
  2. Emballage alimentaire selon la revendication 1, dans lequel le film (31; 131) est fixé au plateau support rigide (12; 112), dans un état tendu sur la face supérieure du plateau support.
  3. Emballage alimentaire selon la revendication 1 ou 2, dans lequel le matériau plastique du plateau support (12;112) est un copolymère d'acrylonitrile, un polyester ou un polypropylène, de préférence un copolymère d'acrylonitrile.
  4. Emballage alimentaire selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 3, dans lequel les parois latérales présentent une hauteur d'au moins 25,4 mm (un pouce).
  5. Emballage alimentaire selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 5, dans lequel au moins une couche du film à couches multiples (31; 131) comprend du polyester, du nylon ou du polyéthylène.
  6. Emballage alimentaire selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 5, dans lequel le film à couches multiples (31; 131) est thermoscellé, collé ou scellé aux ultrasons sur le plateau support en matériau plastique rigide.
  7. Emballage alimentaire selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 6, dans lequel le plateau support (12; 112) est constitué d'une pièce unique de matériau qui forme les rebords et les compartiments, les rebords périphériques (33; 133) formant la délimitation extérieure du plateau support dans le plan de référence et les rebords intérieurs (34; 134) divisant les compartiments entre eux.
  8. Emballage alimentaire selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 7, dans lequel le plateau support (12; 112) et le composant de fermeture extérieure (11; 111) sont tous deux de forme globalement rectangulaire en vue en plan, le composant de fermeture extérieure présentant quatre pans, un pan situé de façon intimement adjacente à chaque côté du plateau support.
  9. Emballage alimentaire selon la revendication 8, dans lequel le plateau support (12) et le composant de fermeture extérieure (11) sont sensiblement de forme carrée en vue en plan et le composant de fermeture extérieure présente des ouvertures (14 à 16) dans son opacité, permettant d'observer à travers elles les contenus de tous les compartiments.
  10. Emballage alimentaire selon la revendication 8, dans lequel le plateau support (112) et le composant de fermeture extérieure (111) présentent tous deux une forme de rectangle allongé, le plateau support présentant au moins six compartiments (50 à 56) et le composant de fermeture extérieure présentant des ouvertures (114 à 116) dans son opacité, permettant d'observer à travers elles les contenus de tous les compartiments.
