Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an underground structure for erection in an underground made of firn or ice.
The construction and maintenance of buildings, for example research stations, on snow or ice in polar areas is extremely difficult due to the following factors:
- The precipitation from snow does not melt and leads to the fact that above-ground buildings snow up, while underground structures are burdened with a constantly increasing snow cover. In both cases, the lifespan of the buildings is shortened or limited by the snow, not to mention the increasingly restricted usability of the buildings.
- Above-ground buildings (EP 0 219 162 A2) represent an obstacle to the snow drifting on the surface and lead to snow drifts on the building, which greatly impedes use.
- Above-ground buildings are exposed to strong winds in high latitudes and have to be designed accordingly for the loads from wind.
- The snow or ice ground is generally not dimensionally stable, but is subject to constraints from movement as glaciers or ice shelves, which lead to deformations (pressures, strains, twists and settlements) for which the building is normally not designed and their static and constructive Consideration is extremely expensive.
It is also known that the constructional and environmental problems described above are attempted to be countered by the following measures:
- Laying in the ground to avoid the snow drifts and wind loads. The deformations of the subsurface and the increasing load from the cover must then be accepted, and attempts are being made to minimize their destructive influence either by means of particularly flexible protective covers, for example made from corrugated iron tubes, or by means of particularly strong stiffeners.
- The elevation of an above-ground building on supports in order to offer as little resistance as possible to the drifting snow, or the erection of the building on a platform that is adjustable in height on supports. With the latter version, the circumstance of the constantly increasing level of waiters area are taken into account, however, in both cases high expenditure is required to remove the wind forces, and the supports and their foundations are exposed to the deformations of the subsoil. Because of the resulting forces in the column construction, attempts are made to keep the deformations of the foundations low by mutual anchoring, but without lasting success.
The invention has for its object to provide a structure and to find a construction that is insensitive to wind loads, snow accumulation and deformation of the ground.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that a flat roof construction resting on supports is adjustable in height such that its upper edge is always essentially at the same height as the surface of the snow or ice.
The invention proposes to arrange devices for height adjustment of the roof structure on the supports, between supports and roof structure or below the supports.
The supports can preferably be connected to the roof structure and foundations via joints.
In a particularly preferred embodiment it is provided that the supports are horizontally displaceable at their lower end.
Furthermore, the invention proposes to divide the roof construction into several segments by arranging joints.
In a further embodiment of the invention Provide roof structure on its edge adjacent to the firn or ice with devices that make it possible to pull the edge back from the firn or ice when adjusting the height of the roof structure.
Furthermore, it is advantageous if the outer surface of the roof edge is provided with a coating which keeps the friction between the roof edge and the existing firn or ice low.
The invention further proposes to let the outer surface of the roof edge run obliquely outwards from the bottom upwards.
Furthermore, the roof edge can be designed as a hollow body which can be acted upon by a heating medium via pipelines.
Finally, it is also provided according to the invention to provide the upper outer edges of the roof structure with upwardly directed cutting edges.
In a further particular embodiment of the invention it is provided that a segment of the roof structure connected to the rest of the roof structure can be raised to such an extent that an underneath ramp is accessible.
It can advantageously be provided that side walls can be connected to the raised roof segment along the length of the ramp.
The solution according to the invention consists in arranging an underground building consisting of roof construction and supports in such a way that the roof surface is always or gradually changing due to the height adjustment Terrain surface can be adjusted.
The height adjustment is carried out on the supports; it can be done for the whole roof at once or for individual roof sections one after the other. To reduce or to eliminate the friction between the roof edge and the surrounding firn or ice during the lifting process, the roof edge is provided with a covering that has a low coefficient of friction, or it is heated. For the same purpose, the roof edge can also be designed to be movable in relation to the actual roof and be pulled back by the firn or ice before the lifting process. Combinations of the features described are possible as required. The roof edge can also be arranged obliquely or vertically as required.
The walls and floor of the building are formed by the upcoming firn or ice. Due to its high shear strength, this subsurface can be regarded as sufficiently stable in polar regions. The bulging of the walls towards the room caused by creeping as well as the bulging of the floor in the building caused by reduced load can be taken into account by removing it with a suitable device.
In order to maintain the selected clear height inside the building after a lifting process, the floor is replenished with snow at the appropriate height. Objects placed inside must either be temporarily removed or jacked up.
A sufficient seal between the edge of the roof and the existing subsoil will result from blowing snow by itself after a lifting process. This process can be accelerated by the targeted introduction of snow.
The supports are not extended during the lifting process, but are either placed back on their old foundations after inserting an appropriate intermediate layer of snow or other materials or - with the loss of the old foundations - on new foundations. Settlements or uplifts in the subsurface, even if they are uneven, can be compensated for at any time by traversing with the lifting device.
Due to the hinged supports at the top and bottom, the construction will not suffer any static disadvantages in the event of deformations, especially also when the substrate is deformed horizontally. If an inclination of the supports from such deformations disturbs or is not accepted, the supports can be moved horizontally on their foundations at their lower ends, if necessary after provisional interception.
If the deformation of the subsurface has the effect that the roof is tilted, then by simply digging the fir or ice over the roof height on the pressure side, compensation and alignment to the original size can be achieved.
The construction can easily be expanded to the effect that one or more sides of the roof can be temporarily raised so far that vehicles can enter the underground building via a ramp arranged under the edge of the roof. For this purpose, for example, the roof side to be lifted can be connected to the rest of the roof in an articulated manner, and walls can be connected to the liftable roof part at ramp length, which are raised when the ramp cover is opened and make it difficult for the ramp to drift from the sides.

The space 1 occupied by the building is obtained by excavating the upcoming firn or ice, the current surface of which is identified by the line "s-s". The building room 1 can not be heated above about -3 ° C for obvious reasons, but can be directly to Example for storage purposes or as a garage. Heat-insulated buildings 6 for residential and work purposes can be used without restriction if suitable heat is provided for the heat that drifts outwards.
The roof consists of a suitable
