Abstract

The franking machine has, in addition to a main memory, a background memory, by which the storage content of the main memory is taken over during the opening of the housing or of a housing cover of the franking machine. The return of the storage content to the main memory takes place after the closing of the housing or of the housing cover. The exchange of the memory contents is initiated by the signal from an electrical switch provided on the housing. The background memory ensures that the accounting of postage values with the Post Office cannot be falsified as a result of service work.

Description

The invention relates to a franking machine with electromechanical actuators enclosed in a housing for the franking value setting of type wheels mounted on the print head, electronic value adding units for adding up the value of each franking to a total amount of previous frankings contained in a main memory and with a central electronic control unit (CPU).

Known franking machines of this type have the disadvantage that in the case of repair work for which the housing of the franking machine has to be opened or removed, unauthorized changes of the content of the main memory or those which do not correspond to the consumption of franking values are possible. The invention has for its object to find a franking machine that avoids this disadvantage, so that on the occasion of maintenance work an actuation of the actuators and changes in the amount of value in the main memory does not lead to any permanent change in the amount of value in the main memory that falsifies billing with the post office. This problem is solved by a background memory for temporarily recording the content of the main memory on the basis of the "open" signal from signaling means provided on the housing and returning this content to the main memory on the basis of the "closed" signal of such signaling means. The signaling means can consist of a simple electrical open-close switch which is provided on a part of the housing which has to be moved in order to open the housing.

It is thus achieved on the basis of the invention that when the housing of the franking machine is opened, the content of the value quantity memory required for the value settlement with the post office is so long in an otherwise inaccessible background memory until the case is closed again.

The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings. It shows:
  • 1 shows a flowchart of the program sequence of the central electronic control unit when opening and closing the housing and
  • 2 shows a schematic representation of parts of the franking machine that are essential to the invention, with a functional diagram.

The franking machine, e.g. their electromechanical drives can be designed, for example, in accordance with US-A-4,520,725 and CH-A-663,848, and it is not necessary to describe them in more detail.

The function of the franking machine due to its design according to the invention results from the representations in FIGS. 1 and 2.

According to the program diagram in FIG. 1, it is first queried at branching field 2 whether a signal transmitter attached to the housing of the franking machine indicates whether it is open or closed. When the housing is closed, a check is made in accordance with program line 3 at junction field 4 to determine whether a "housing open" flag is not set in the program. If this is the case, this flag is reset and the memory contents in the main memory 6 are replenished by querying the background memory 9 to the state before the housing was opened, since the housing is actually closed.

When the housing is open, a query is made according to junction 7 as to whether the "Housing open" flag is set. If this is not already the case, it is set in accordance with the function field 8, and in addition the memory contents of the main memory 6 stored in the background memory 9. If the "housing open" flag is already set, it is checked according to the program line 10 at the branches 11 and 12 whether the memory content of the main memory 6 is not zero and whether the setting on the franking head is greater than zero. If the memory content in the main memory 6 is not zero and the setting value on the franking head is greater than zero, these are set to zero according to function field 13. In this case, the corresponding values are stored in the background memory 9, as previously mentioned.

Fig. 2 shows in the middle area the distribution of the non-volatile RAM main memory 6 on different contents, i.e. on the total amount of all frankings shown in field 15 and on the various user accounts 16 shown in tabular form, each of which is divided into 100 different sub-accounts that can be debited by the respective user of the franking machine when franking. The allocation to one of the different user accounts takes place using an identification key, e.g. corresponding to US-A-4 788 623. The division into sub-accounts has accounting advantages. Accordingly, when the content of the main memory 6 is stored, it is necessary to store it in the background memory 9 after the same division. The arrows 18, 19 "open lid" and "close lid" illustrate the exchange of the memory contents between the two memories 6, 9 according to the program diagram in FIG. 1. In the left part of FIG. 2, the value adding units 20, 21, 22 required for the different memory contents are shown schematically. For each addition, the previous value of the account content is called up from the memory 6 and the amount used for franking is then added to this value in order to be subsequently stored again. This is indicated by the functional loops 24, 25, 26. In the functional loop 25 it is also indicated by the functional field 27 that the addition result is deleted when the housing is open.
