Description

The present invention relates to a brake device for skates and skateboards, actuated during tilting of the skate or the board backwards by pressing on the ground a wheel mounted in rotation to one of the ends of a lever element, the braking being obtained by friction of the other end of the lever element on each of the rear rollers of the skate or of the board.
A brake device for roller skates of the above type is described in patent GB-A-25,730. Similar devices, in which a simple fixed shoe element replaces the wheel rotatably mounted at the end of the lever element are described in patents GB-A-11,117 and US-A-1, 456,881. These devices of very old design are for each of them designed according to a very specific type of roller skates. They are fixed at the level of the axis of rotation of the rollers and could hardly be adapted on modern roller skates. On the other hand, they are of relatively complex design and all include a spring element intended to reposition the device in its rest position after braking. Any element of spring being able over time to tire and lose its elasticity, this may result in an impairment of the operation of the device.
Most of the roller skates that are currently found on the market are fitted with very rudimentary brake devices since they are made in the form of simple rubber or plastic elements fixedly arranged at the front or at the front. rear of the shoe and intended for braking by friction of said element against the ground when the shoe is tilted respectively backwards or towards the front. Such braking devices are not satisfactory, because, unless they are experienced skaters, they cause frequent loss of balance caused by the sudden braking they provide. On the other hand, they wear out very quickly.
A device of the type presented above, but designed for modern roller skates is described in the European patent application published under number 0039935. This device is an integral part of the axle supporting a pair of rollers. It is designed so that the lever element acts on the lateral faces of each of the rollers. It comprises a relatively high number of parts and in particular a spring element intended to return the device to the rest position after braking. Another device is described in the international PCT application published under No. WO 82/00770. Like the previous one, this device is fixed at the level of the axis of rotation of a pair of rollers. It is also of relatively complex design and also includes a spring element intended for its return to the rest position.
The object of the present invention is to provide a brake device for skates and skateboards allowing rapid immobilization of the skate, without risk of loss of balance, composed of a limited number of parts which are easy to manufacture and can be put in place on all modern skates or skateboards without modification.
To this end, the invention relates to a brake device for skates and skateboards, actuated during tilting of the skate or of the board backwards by the pressing on the ground of a wheel mounted in rotation at l 'one end of a lever element, braking being obtained by friction of the other end of the element lever on each of the rear castors of the skate or of the board, characterized in that it comprises a basic element intended to be fixed to the rear part of the chassis of the skate or of the board, the lever element being mounted in rotation around an axis integral with said base element, the assembly being arranged so that the lever element returns to the rest position by the sole effect of the weight of the wheel.
According to one embodiment, the basic element is fixed to the frame of the skate or the board using the fixing screw of the axle of the rear rollers, the basic element possibly comprising a part d flat end having a hole for the passage of the fixing screw of the rear wheel axle on the skate or board chassis, the fixing of the base element can then be obtained by tightening said part of end between said chassis and said axle.
The parts of the lever element intended to bear by friction against the rollers can be of the same width as that of the rollers of the skate or of the board and comprise lateral grooves.
The basic element may include a recessed portion intended for centering and blocking the brake device around the centering / blocking device for the axle of the rear rollers.
The end portion of the base member may have a prominent washer-shaped portion disposed around the hole.
The device can be made for example of metal or plastic.
This device has the advantage of being able to be mounted very simple way, by anyone, in a single operation on all modern skates and skateboards. It includes a very limited number of parts, simple to make. In addition, its operation is not likely to be altered over time, since it has no spring element for returning to the rest position.
The invention will be better understood on the basis of the description of an example of a brake device for roller skates, and with reference to the drawings in which:

11 is a vertical transverse section along B-B in FIG. 8.
As shown in Figures 1 to 3, the brake device comprises a basic element 1 intended to be fixed to the chassis of the roller skate. A lever element 9 is rotatably mounted on the base element 1 around an axis element 7. A wheel 14 is rotatably mounted at one end of the lever element, around a axis element 13. The base element comprises a first attachment part 2 having a flat surface and comprising a hole 4 intended for fixing said base element to the shoe, and a second part 3, inclined in the direction longitudinal with respect to the first part 2, and comprising a hollow part opening towards the outside, so as to reduce the quantity of material and forming two branches 6, 6 ′ and constituting an empty space 5 which allows the centering and the blocking of the brake device in position after its installation, in the same way as the locking in position of the rear wheel axle. Each of the branches 6, 6 'is pierced at its end by a laterally directed hole intended for the passage of the axis element 7 disposed perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of symmetry 8 of the device. The lever element 9 comprises on the one hand two parts 10, 10 ′ in the form of fins, arranged longitudinally and symmetrically with respect to the axis of symmetry 8, and spaced apart so that the two branches 6, 6 'of the basic element. Holes are also provided at the base of said wing-shaped parts so as to allow passage of the axis element 7 allowing the lever element 9 to rotate relative to the base element 1. The lever element 9 also comprises a part 11, longitudinally, inclined by relative to the parts 10, 10 ′ and arranged in the form of a fork with two branches 12, 12 ′ extending in the opposite direction to that of the parts in the form of fins 10, 10 ′ and having holes arranged transversely at their ends, so as to allow the passage of the axle element 13 on which the wheel 14 is mounted to rotate.
The mounting of the brake device on the shoe is very simple. It suffices to unscrew the axle of the rear castors, to place the flat face of part 2 of the basic element against the frame of the skate by positioning hole 4 opposite the hole intended for the fixing screw of said axle and replace the axle so as to immobilize part 2 of the basic element between the chassis and the axle using the axle fixing screw. In the rest state, that is to say when the shoe is in the horizontal position, the weight of the assembly constituted by the wheel and the part 11 of the lever element being greater than the weight of the fins 10, 10 'of said lever element, said fins undergo an upward thrust and abut against the frame of the skate. The dimensions and positioning of the parts of the brake device are chosen so that the lowest point of the wheel 14 is located substantially higher than the lowest point of the rollers 15 of the shoe. To brake, simply tilt the skate backwards by lifting the front of the skate. In this way, the wheel 14 comes to rest against the ground and swings the lever element 9 around the axis 7, the parts in the form of fins 10, 10 ′ then coming to bear on the rollers 15 skating. After braking, when the shoe returns to its horizontal position, the brake device automatically returns to the rest under the effect of the weight of the wheel as mentioned above.
An alternative embodiment of the lever element is shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. The fin-shaped parts 21, 21 * of the lever element 20 shown in these figures have lateral grooves 22 arranged on their lower faces so as to increase the fixing effect on the rollers 15 of the skate or the board during braking.
La partie creuse 34 est destinée à remplacer la partie vide 5 de l'élément de base décrit à la figure 1.An alternative embodiment of the base element is shown in FIGS. 7 to 10. This base element also includes a hole 31 intended for its attachment to the shoe. The general shape of this basic element is significantly different from that of the basic element described above and is particularly suitable for being made of plastic. The element 30 comprises an incorporated washer element 32, disposed around the hole 31, so as to facilitate the adaptation of the base element on all the pads of the trade. Indeed, this washer-shaped part, when made of plastic, can easily be touched up, for example by filing or milling before being mounted on the skate. In order to reinforce its rigidity, the element 30 comprises two longitudinal stiffeners 33. The hollow part 34 is intended to replace the empty part 5 of the basic element described in FIG. 1.
Of course, the examples of the brake device described above can be mounted on roller skates or skateboards. They can be executed in any metallic material or, preferably, in plastic material, which allows a lighter embodiment facilitating the freedom of movement of the user. They may have visible parts of bright color, or reflective, or phosphorescent or fluorescent, so as to make the skater better visible and to increase his safety in traffic.
As can be seen in the figures, in the examples given the parts 10, 21 in the form of fins of the lever elements have substantially the same width as the rollers so as to increase the friction surface. On the other hand, their thickness will preferably be calculated to remain as thin as possible, so as to allow good cooling.
