Radially inwardly of the highest point (15) a downwardly depending draw (16) of the lid extends further downwardly than the skirt(13), before blending via a radius (17) into a central lid portion (18) bounded radially outwardly by radius (17).
- Central lid portion (18) is generally planar except that three beads (19), (20), (21) are formed so as to project upwardly from the flat central portion (18).

- the radius (23) defines a crest of bead (19) and it is preferred if the height of the crest measured from plane (18) and the depth of draw from plane (14) to plane (18) are in the ratio of 4.5 to 18.5 or about 1 to 4 or 25%. It is preferred if the depth of draw is at least 5% of the outside diameter of the lid and is optimally in the range 5 to 7%.
- the pail body (32) with its curl (33) is closed by a lug-cover lid having a central portion (18) having a deep-drawn wall (16) rolled over to a rim (36) in which is positioned a gasket (37).
- the rim extends downwardly in lugs (11) which are adapted to be clenched under the curl of the pail to secure the lid on the pail as will now be described.
- the lugs (11) extend downwardly from the rim (36) such that the lid may be easily placed in firmly fitting relationship with the pail.
- the clenching of the lugs inwardly and upwardly to form the re-entrant angle (40) is beneficial in retaining the cover in place on the pail during hydraulic pressure testing. It is a feature of the invention that the curl formed by rotation of the rim of the pail through more than 450° enables a much higher clenching force to be applied to the lug without collapsing the curl on the pail, and therefore allows the re-entrant clenching of the lug up and between the curl and the adjacent cylindrical wall of the pail. The clenching force applied by the lid further forms the curl such that an exceptionally effective assembly results from this combination of pail and lid.
- the beads are circular and concentric.
- suitable diameters for the crests of beads (19), (20) and (21) are approximately 270, 240 and 216 mm respectively and in any event it is preferred if the beads lie within the radially outermost 60% of the diameter of the central portion of the lid.
- a lid of outside diameter 300 mm when fitted to an open head pail using the method of attachment shown in Figure 2 and where the lid is made of tinplate 0.5 mm thick and the pail is made of tinplate 0.38 mm thick in both the body and bottom, then the pail is capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 100 kPa for at least five minutes.

Claims (9)
- Couvercle (10) à utiliser dans un ensemble comprenant un seau à ouverture totale (32) et un couvercle (10), ce couvercle (10) étant en fer-blanc ou en tôle d'acier doux
et présentant une gorge périphérique (14) garnie d'un joint afin d'être adaptée de manière étanche et complémentaire sur un bord périphérique (33) du seau (32) par déformation vers l'intérieur et vers le haut, autour du bord roulé (33) du seau, de pattes (11) situées tout autour de la périphérie du couvercle (10); une région centrale généralement plane (18) et une région périphérique emboutie dans laquelle la gorge (14) garnie d'un joint est décalée du plan de la région centrale (18), la région centrale (18) du couvercle (10) étant pourvue de plusieurs nervures déformées vers le haut et vers l'extérieur (19, 20, 21) et ayant chacune un profil en coupe transversale décalé asymétriquement, la déformation vers le haut maximale ou le sommet de chaque nervure (19, 20, 21) étant décalé radialement vers l'extérieur d'un axe central radial de cette nervure (19, 20, 21), caractérisé en ce que le couvercle (10) a une épaisseur comprise entre 0,43 et 0,5 mm et en ce que le degré de décalage de la région centrale (18) du couvercle (10) à partir d'un plan contenant l'extrémité la plus distante de la gorge (14) garnie d'un joint, c'est-à-dire la profondeur d'emboutissage, est de 5 à 7% du diamètre extérieur du couvercle (10) et le degré de décalage de la région centrale plane (10) du couvercle par rapport au plan contenant le sommet des nervures (19, 20, 21) est approximativement de 23 à 27% de la profondeur d'emboutissage. - Couvercle (10) suivant la revendication 1, dans lequel le nombre de nervures (19, 20, 21) est de deux à quatre.
- Couvercle (10) suivant la revendication 2, dans lequel le nombre de nervures (19, 20, 21) est de trois.
- Couvercle (10) suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel les nervures (19, 20, 21) sont circulaires.
- Couvercle (10) suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel les nervures (19, 20, 21) sont concentriques.
- Couvercle (10) suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel les nervures (19, 20, 21) sont circonférentiellement continues.
- Couvercle (10) suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel la section transversale des nervures (19, 20, 21) comprend deux lignes droites (22, 24) reliées par un arrondi (23), les lignes droites (22, 24) étant de longueurs inégales et l'arrondi (23) ne dépassant pas cinq fois l'épaisseur de la tôle.
- Couvercle (10) suivant la revendication (7), dans lequel les deux lignes droites (22, 24) délimitant la section transversale des nervures (19, 20, 21) comprennent une ligne située radialement plus vers l'extérieur qui coupe la partie plane (18) du couvercle (10) sous un angle compris entre environ 80 et 90°.
- Ensemble combiné d'un seau (32) et d'un couvercle (10), caractérisé en ce qu'un couvercle (10) suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes est assujetti à un bord complémentaire (33) d'un seau en fer-blanc (32) dans lequel le bord (33) est un bord roulé (33) dont la partie supérieure a été formée par une rotation d'un angle d'au moins 450° et dans lequel un rabattement des pattes (11) vers l'intérieur et vers le haut produit une configuration de bord roulé bien serrée.
