Abstract

A fluorocarbon elastomer having remarkably high tensile strength, high modulus in tension, and excellent retention of tensile strength at elevated temperatures, made from a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and at least one copolymerizable fluorine-containing monomer blended with a polyfunctional acrylate and exposed to high-energy ionizing radiation to crosslink the copolymer. No thermal curing agent needs to be used unless the elastomer is being molded to form a shaped body such as an O-ring or a gasket. Even then, the preferred amount of thermal curing agent is only about one-fourth the amount used in the prior art for crosslinking such fluorocarbon elastomer copolymers. The fluorocarbon elastomer is especially useful as fuel line tubing and can be so used without a jacket.
