Abstract

To guarantee the sealing of a rubber roll (1, 2, n) at its front sides (1.1, 2.1, n.1; 1.2) by means of sealing plates placed against these front sides over a prolonged period and at relatively high rotational speeds of the rubber roll, provision is made according to the invention for the rubber roll to have at its front sides a state achieved by means of UV-radiation, which state is between a rubber elastic and a glassy state. <??>Using a device operating according to the process according to the invention, the front sides of rubber rolls 1, 2, n having a Shore hardness of approximately 50 to 60 is subjected to a UV-radiation with a wavelength of approximately 300 to 400 nm for approximately 60 hours. The UV-radiation is thereby generated using a so-called black-light lamp (22), in which an output of approximately 0.1 watt is installed per square centimetre of a front side of a rubber roll, the black-light lamp being arranged at a distance (a) of the order of magnitude of 10 cm from the respective front side (1.1, 2.1. n.1; 1.2) to be irradiated. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a rubber roller for a pair of rollers, in which the rubber roller is positioned in a contact zone along common surface lines of the rubber roller and a further roller on the further roller and a liquid supply is provided which is located in a gusset located above the contact zone between the rubber roller and the another roller is enclosed by means of sealing means at the ends of these rollers, the sealing means being positioned at least with respect to the rubber roller on one end face of a respective roller, and also a method for converting the shape at the end faces of such a rubber roller.

A pair of rollers of the type mentioned is known, for example, from US Pat. No. 4,455,938, specifically as part of a dampening unit for an offset printing machine. The applicator roller, which has an elastic surface and corresponds to the rubber roller of the subject matter of the invention, is used for applying dampening solution to a plate cylinder of the offset printing press. In the upper gusset between the applicator roller and a metering roller positioned against it, a dampening solution supply is enclosed by means of sealing means at the ends of these rollers. These sealing means have a sealing plate at each end of the pair of rollers, which is set with a flat side against an end face of the application roller and with an arcuate sealing plate end face against the outer surface of the metering roller, each under the contact pressure of a spring.

Sealing plates of the type mentioned are generally made of a plastic with a low coefficient of friction, such as PTFE. Dosing rollers of dampening systems interacting with sealing plates of this type are generally provided at their ends with steel rings, against which a respective circular arc-shaped sealing plate end face is set, so that relatively little wear occurs on the metering roller and on the sealing plate end face, especially when plasma-coated steel rings are used.

When sealing an applicator roller designed as a rubber roller at the end, however, the required contact pressure of the sealing plate and the high coefficient of friction of the rubber result in very high friction forces. These lead to an inadmissible temperature rise, which can result in temperatures of up to 130 ° C at high machine speeds, and to severe wear on both the rubber roller and the sealing plate and even the destruction thereof. The required sealing is no longer guaranteed.

The object of the invention is to ensure the sealing of a rubber roller on its end faces by means of sealing plates placed against these end faces over an extended period of time and at relatively high speeds of the rubber roller.

This object is achieved with a rubber roller specified in claim 1 and a method for converting the state shape on the end faces of a rubber roller specified in claim 2.

In the cases in which rubber or rubber-elastic materials are used in the prior art, one always makes their particular elasticity and / or their relative high coefficient of friction. If the elasticity decreases and embrittlement occurs, components made of appropriate materials such as sealing rings or buffers are replaced with new ones.

Among other things, the elasticity is also decisive for the use of rubber for an application roller of a dampening unit of an offset printing press. The rubber known as the preferred sealing material also gave satisfactory results when sealing an applicator roller designed as a rubber roller.

However, the invention treads the way to maintain the elasticity of the outer surface of the applicator roller and, in return for utilizing the elasticity and the relatively high coefficient of friction, for the purpose of sealing, to form the end faces of a rubber roller to be sealed with reduced elasticity and reduced coefficient of friction.

For this purpose, the invention makes use of a state of rubber which is undesirable in the prior art and provides this state of the state on the end faces of the rubber roller.

An undesirable state of rubber in the prior art lies between a rubber-elastic and a glass-like state and occurs with advanced molecular crosslinking, which is accompanied by an increasing hardening of the rubber and an increasing smoothing of its surface. The invention makes use of these properties known as signs of aging. Here, an artificially shortened aging process is provided locally on the end faces of the rubber roller and the resulting hardening and smoothing of the end faces is used to improve their wear resistance and to reduce their frictional resistance, while the rubber-elastic ones Properties of the remaining areas of the rubber roller are retained.

According to the invention, the artificially shortened aging process is brought about by means of UV radiation. According to the invention, this is further restricted to the end faces of the rubber rollers.

The artificially aged end faces of the rubber roller provided according to the invention now ensure, thanks to the increased wear resistance and the smoothed surface, an end face sealing of the rubber roller by means of sealing plates placed against their end faces over a prolonged period and at relatively high speeds of the rubber roller.

In the case of a rubber roller with a hardness of the order of 50 to 60 Shore, favorable sealing properties are achieved in connection with sealing plates placed on the end faces of the rubber roller if these end faces are exposed to UV radiation with a wavelength of approximately 60 hours over a period of time 300 to 400 nm are exposed, the outer surface of the rubber roller being shielded from the UV radiation, the UV radiation being generated with a so-called black light lamp, a power of the black light lamp of the order of 0.1 watts is installed per square centimeter of an end face and the black light lamp is arranged at a distance of the order of 10 cm from the end face to be irradiated in each case.

An embodiment of a device for performing this method is shown in the drawing.

Here are first end faces 1.1, 2.1, ..., n.1 of a plurality of rubber rollers 1, 2, ..., n in a first plane arranged, which is represented by an outer surface 10 of a shield 11 for the outer surfaces of the rubber rollers 1, 2, ..., n against the UV radiation. The shield 11 is provided with openings 12 which are adapted to the respective diameter of the rubber rollers 1, 2, ..., n. The longitudinal axes 20.1, 20.2, ..., 20.n of the rubber rollers 1, 2, ..., n lie in an imaginary second plane 21. In the same plane 21 there is a rod-shaped black light lamp 22 parallel to the outer surface 10 of the shield 11 Distance a from the end faces 1.1, 2.1, ..., n.1 of the rubber rollers 1, 2, ..., n is arranged. The shield 11 protects the outer surfaces of the rubber rollers 1, 2,..., N from the UV radiation emitted by the black light lamp 22.

A favorable for the frontal sealing in the sense of the invention, the end face of a rubber roller with a hardness of the order of 50 to 60 Shore results when using the device shown in the drawing, if a black light tube of about 120 cm in length with a power of about 36 watts is arranged at a distance a of about 10 cm, this black light tube is assigned to the end faces of a number of n = 15 rubber rollers with a diameter of about 60 mm and an irradiation time of about 60 hours is provided.

A power of the order of 0.1 watts is installed in the black light tube per square centimeter of an end face of a rubber roller.
