Definitions
- the invention relates to storage containers for radioactive waste, more particularly suitable for the storage of weakly and moderately radioactive solidified waste from nuclear sites.
- the containers concerned are concrete containers and the waste consists in particular of so-called process waste such as filters, evaporator concentrates and used ion exchange resins. Concrete containers are essential for the transport and storage of such radioactive waste as soon as the radioactivity measured exceeds 200 mrem / h.
- Liquid waste is poured into containers and then conditioned for solidification.
- Storage containers should be designed to provide optimal usable volume while ensuring biological protection over time.
- the known containers consist of a container closed by a stopper.
- the container comprises a concrete shell or envelope and an inner metal tank, the wall of which comprises, if necessary, a layer of lead constituting a shield.
- the plug is a plug, most often made of concrete, poured on site. Concrete plugs poured in situ sometimes show some cracking due to the dimensional variations of the concrete over time and they are of variable quality and difficult to control.
- Other known plugs consist of lead beads embedded in a mixture of pitch and epoxy resin. This solution offers better protection against radiation, but it is difficult and expensive to carry out.
- the object of the invention is to obviate these drawbacks by proposing a container allowing faster and safer closure with the aid of a stopper, the quality of which can be checked beforehand.
- the subject of the invention is a container for storing radioactive waste, more particularly suitable for storing weakly or moderately radioactive solidified waste, consisting of a container and a plug, the container comprising an external concrete envelope and an internal wall. composite forming both tanks intended to contain the waste while making it possible to absorb dimensional variations over time of the envelope, and to thermally insulate the envelope from the interior of the tank and, in cooperation with the latter , to confine the radiation inside the container, the container further comprising a seat for the plug and connecting means intended to cooperate with means for connecting the plug, characterized in that the plug is a prefabricated concrete plug .
- the use of the invention allows, in addition, a lower requirement in qualification of operating personnel, which is of interest, particularly in exported installations (South Africa, South Korea, People's China, ).
- the stopper has a metallic coating, the edge of which constitutes said means for connecting the stopper and whose face facing the tank defines the interior volume of the container therewith; the container is provided with an annular element integral with the tank and bearing on the envelope to form the seat for the stopper; the outer edge of the annular element constitutes the means for connecting the container; the edges of the covering of the plug and of the annular element are, after the fitting of the plug on the seat, juxtaposed and project towards the outside of the container.
- the edges are tightly connected together by a continuous weld bead or a continuous crimp.
- the metal coating is bowl-shaped; the annular element comprises a radial core and a skirt directed upwards; the edges of the bowl and the skirt protrude towards the top of the container.
- the plug is provided with a recess extending over the entire periphery of its upper face; the envelope of the container is provided with a recess corresponding to the end of its internal wall opposite the stopper; the recesses form, when the stopper is placed on the container, a groove into which the edges of the bowl and the skirt open.
- the side wall of the cap coating and the skirt of the annular container element are flared in order to ensure centering and to contribute to the sealing by contact of the side wall of the coating of the cap on the skirt.
- FIGS 1 and 2 show a first embodiment of the invention.
- the container 1 consists of a container 2 hermetically closed using a prefabricated concrete plug 3.
- the container has an outer casing 4 of concrete and a composite inner wall 5 forming a tank.
- the internal wall is of cylindrical shape and composed of different elements arranged in the following order, seen from the inside to the outside of FIG. 1: first a first steel element 6 forming the internal face of the container, followed by an element made of heavy material such as lead 7 forming a shield against radiation. This shielding is covered by a second steel element 8 followed by a flexible element 9.
- the flexible element 9 has the function of absorbing the dimensional variations over time of the envelope 2, which is essential to avoid cracks in the concrete caused by tensions in the latter during its removal.
- the flexible element 9 must also serve as thermal insulation when filling the container 2, since the waste can be poured into the container in the state hot and undergo a temperature rise during solidification, which causes thermal stresses in the concrete. It is therefore desirable to mitigate these stresses by having a heat-insulating element between the tank and the concrete envelope.
- the flexible element 9 is preferably made of expanded polystyrene.
- the element must be protected against the humidity contained in the concrete and this protection can be ensured by a layer 10 of an appropriate material, for example polyane, applied to the external face of the flexible element 9 in order to prevent that it is in direct contact with the concrete casing 4.
- a layer 10 of an appropriate material for example polyane
- An agitator 13 can be used for packaging the waste for solidification and it then remains with the waste in the container.
- a shoe 11 forming a support for the axis 12 of the agitator 13 with blades 14 is fixed to the center of the bottom of the tank 5.
- the container 2 is provided with an annular element 15 integral with the open end of the tank 5 and intended to form a seat for the plug 3.
- the annular element 15 comprises a radial core 16, a skirt 17 directed upwards and an axial re-entrant collar 18 which forms an anti-overflow member during the agitation of the waste with a view to its conditioning and which delimits the useful volume of the container.
- the container 2 is, over its entire periphery, provided with a groove 19 intended to receive a belt for handling the empty container or the filled and closed container.
- the concrete plug 3 is provided with a metal coating 20 whose face facing the tank 5 defines therewith the interior volume of the container.
- the metal coating 20 is in the form of a bowl.
- the side wall 21 of the bowl 20 cooperates, when the cap 3 is in place on the container 2, with the skirt 17 of the annular element 15 of the container 2 so that their respective edges form means of connection of the cap with the container.
- the edges are juxtaposed and assembled over their entire length by a continuous weld bead 22.
- the weld bead is advantageously applied using a welding robot, which makes it possible to automate the entire sealing process. This assembly process also has the advantage of ensuring an absolutely tight seal between the elements.
- the side wall 21 of the bowl 20 and the skirt 17 of the annular element 15 preferably have a flared shape.
- the flared shape ensures the centering of the plug 3 when it is placed on the container 2.
- the skirt 17 of flared shape forms a bearing surface against which the side wall 21 of the covering 20 also flared rests, this which also contributes to sealing between the plug 3 and the container 2.
- the side wall 21 of the bowl 20 and the skirt 17 of the annular element 15 can also be of cylindrical shape, which then requires a cer tain play between these elements to facilitate the installation of the plug.
- the outer concrete casing 4 projects in height above the skirt 17 of the annular element.
- the open face of the plug 3 preferably flush or slightly exceeds the upper end face of the casing 4, when the plug is placed on its seat, in order to present a surface as homogeneous as possible to facilitate the stacking of the containers during storage.
- the envelope 4 of the container 2 is, at the end of its internal wall which faces the plug 3, provided with a continuous recess 23a.
- the plug is provided with a corresponding recess 23b extending over the entire periphery of its upper face.
- the recesses 23a, 23b form, when the cap is placed on the container, a groove 23 into which the edges of the bowl 20 and of the skirt 17 open.
- the groove 23 is filled with a mortar 24 to protect the weld bead 22.
- the groove 23 communicates with the external lateral wall of the casing 4 by radial grooves 26 forming weirs regularly disposed at the open end of the latter.
- the container is preferably provided with a ring 25 of heavy material of the same kind as the shield 7 forming a shield compensating for the reduction in thickness of the wall of the container and of the plug due to the presence of said groove 23.
- L 'ring 25 is disposed inside the container 2 and connected to the annular element 15 thereof.
- the ring 25 can be an insert as shown in FIG. 1 or be part of the shield 7 of the internal wall 5.
- the plug 3 is provided with two threaded sockets 27 arranged in opposite recesses 28 on its upper face.
- the sockets are intended to cooperate with screws 29 integral with lifting rings 30 put in place only during the handling of the plug.
- FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of a variant of the first embodiment of the invention.

Abstract
