Definitions
- This invention concerns improvements in or relating to edge finishers, more particularly to finishers for the edge of steps, stairways and the like.
- edges of the carpet (or carpet and underlay) of a completed stairway frequently can be seen in a side view of the stairway, and can detract from its appearance.
- Stairway edge finishers are thus used to cover the edge of the stairway and the unsightly edges of the carpet and underlay.
- One design of edge finisher used at present is described in UK Patent No. 1,578,753.
- This patent describes and claims an edge finisher comprising two strip-like members and an abutment member, the members being arranged and adapted to fit together so that the abutment member presents a lateral protrusion, whereby when the finisher is located against an edge of a planar element the abutment member is capable of abutting a surface of the element.
- the strip-like members are generally aluminium extrusions and are provided with grooves in which a portion of the abutment member can be slidably engaged.
- the aluminium extrusions are securable together at an angle by cleats which engage in the grooves, but the ends of the extrusions have to be mitred to a corresponding angle to provide a neat finish.
- the present invention provides an edge finisher in which the need for the strip-like members to be mitred is eliminated.
- UK Patent Application No 8706391 describes an edge finisher which comprises two strip-like members and a connecting piece which is adapted to envelop the ends of two adjacent strip-like members with the strip-like members arranged at a predetermined angle to correspond to the edge of a step.
- the connecting piece may be a moulding having a pair of sockets to receive the ends of the strip-like members.
- a stair edge finisher which comprises two strip-like members and a connecting piece which is attached to one of the strip-like members and which contains a recess adapted to accommodate and, when in use, conceal an end of another strip-like member whilst allowing the angle between the two strip-like members to be varied within a narrow range from 90°.
- the strip-like members are extrusions of plastic (eg pvc) or metal (eg aluminium) and preferably they are arranged and adapted to fit together with an abutment member to present a lateral protrusion from the edge finisher such as is described in the UK Patent No 1,578,753.
- the strip-like members are extrusions with undercut longitudinal grooves in one face (which will be the face abutting the step during use) so that suitably shaped abutment pieces can be slid into engagement in the grooves.
- the connecting piece is rigidly attached to one end of a strip-like member. This may be achieved by moulding the connecting piece on to the end of the strip- like member, especially where the latter is plastic. Alternatively where the strip-like member is provided with undercut longitudinal grooves the connecting piece may be attached to the end of it by means of cleats.
- the cleats can be an integral part of the connecting piece or can be separate and located in suitable sockets in the connecting piece.
- Each connecting piece has a recess to accommodate an end of a strip-like member and in its simplest form the recess is simply rectangular in shape, or a depth equal to the thickness of the strip-like member, totally open on one side and on its back face, and of a width sufficient to allow the strip-like member to be accommodated at an angle to the first strip-like member which can be varied over a narrow range from the perpendicular.
- the range of angles permitted between the first and second strip-like members is limited to 75° to 90°. This range includes all the popular angles in use between step and riser on staircases.
- the recess includes, or may be fitted with, means to engage at least one groove in each of the strip-like members being connected by it, in order to provide a flexible connection with the end of the strip-like member.
- the edge finisher of this invention has the advantage that the ends of the strip-like members need not be mitred, and various colour combinations and material combinations may be used for separate components to enhance the appearance of the finish.
- steps 1 are fitted with step nosings and with an edge finisher composed of members 3 and 4 each having integral connecting pieces.
- the members 3 and 4 are handed, 3 being right-handed and 4 being left-handed in a face view.
- a right-handed member 3 is shown in more detail in Figures 2 to 4 and it should be noted at this point that the members 4 are in an exact mirror image of members 3.
- the member 3 consists of a strip-like portion 5 and a connecting piece 6. Both are of plastics material and are rigidly connected together.
- the strip-like portion 5 has two undercut grooves 7 in its back surface into which an abutment member 8 may be mounted (as shown in dotted lines in Figure 4).
- the connecting piece 6 contains a recess 9 which is to receive the end 10 of another strip-like member as shown in Figure 6.
- the recess 9 has a depth which corresponds to the thickness of a strip-like member and a width and length carefully adjusted so as to allow some variation of the angle at which an end 10 of a strip-like member can be received. Alternative angles are shown in Figure 6.
- each member 3 or 4 may be provided with at least one abutment member and the members are arranged along a step edge as shown in Figure 1, with that end 10 of each member remote from its connecting piece 6, being located within the recess 9 in the connecting piece of the adjacent member.
- the abutment members 8 respectively abut against the tread and riser of the step whose edge is being finished and adhesive is used to attach the abutment members to the steps and the edge finisher members 3 and 4 to the edge of the steps.
- connecting piece 17 is a plastics moulding including a pair of integral cleats 11, a substantially rectangular recess 12, and a pair of rounded recesses 13 interconnecting with the recess 12 through neck portions 14.
- the cleats 11 will engage the grooves in an extruded strip-like member to rigidly attach the connecting piece 10 to one end thereof.
- the recess 12 is analogous to recess 9 in Figures 2 to 6, and is to receive an end of another strip-like member.
- the recesses 13 are to receive poppet connectors 14 which are roughly dumb-bell shaped and have one thick end 15 and a thinner end 16. The thick end 15 is to be pushed into a recess 13, the other, thinner, end then being directed into the recess 12 (as shown in Figure 8) where it can engage a groove in the end of a strip-like member (not shown) inserted into the recess.
- the shape of the recesses 13 and corresponding thick end 15 of the poppet connector is asymmetric in order that the poppet connector cannot be pushed into the recess the wrong way round.
