Abstract

Dot matrix displays which are capable of graphics permit any desired point of a display field to be highlighted by simultaneously actuating the associated column and line. Dot matrix displays of this kind permit the representation of characters of different sizes at any desired point of the dot matrix display but are however very expensive. The new device is intended to permit the representation of numerals of different sizes at a lower cost. In a two-line dot matrix display divided up into individual dot matrix fields, each numeral is composed of bar-shaped basic patterns in such a way that the basic patterns displayed on adjacent dot matrix fields form the numeral to be displayed in the manner of a 7-segment display. The numerals formed in this way are two dot matrix fields high and three dot matrix fields wide. Each basic pattern is displayed on a separate dot matrix field. The display device is particularly suitable for microprocessor- controlled measuring devices. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a device for displaying characters, in which the characters to be displayed are formed by highlighting the points assigned to the respective characters of a two-line dot matrix display divided into individual dot matrix fields.

Dot matrix displays in which characters can be displayed by highlighting individual dots are known, in particular, from use in programmable calculators. If alphanumeric characters are to be displayed, a field consisting of 35 points, which is five points wide and seven points high, is usually used for each character to be displayed. In the case of dot matrix displays which allow the display of characters in at least two lines one above the other, two different embodiments are known.

The so-called graphic-capable dot matrix displays allow the highlighting of any desired point in the display field by simultaneously controlling the associated column and row. The characters can therefore be displayed anywhere on the dot matrix display.

However, multi-line dot matrix displays, in which the display field is already divided into individual dot matrix fields, are considerably cheaper than the graphic-capable dot matrix displays, the z. B. are arranged in two or more rows, each with 20 dot matrix fields. Two-line dot matrix displays with 20 dot matrix fields per line are e.g. B. manufactured by Hitachi under the name LMO32L. The dot matrix display is combined with an upstream control module to form a display module. The display module is controlled by a microprocessor which is connected to the input of the control module of the display module via eleven lines. Control signals are fed to the display module via three of these lines, while the remaining eight lines serve as a data bus, via which a maximum of 2⁸ = 256 different characters can be controlled. By combining individual points of a point matrix field, characters can be represented in the form of letters, numbers or symbols. The point combinations of 240 characters are permanently stored in a first memory in the control module of the display module. These characters are letters, numbers, and a series of symbols. These characters cannot be changed by the user. The individual dot matrix fields of the dot matrix display are designed as a "5 x 8" matrix. Of the eight lines in this matrix, only the top seven lines are generally used to represent letters and numbers.

When using dot matrix displays in microprocessor-controlled measuring devices, the task is to display as many characters as possible on the one hand, e.g. B. for operator guidance in the configuration of the device, and on the other hand, to display the result in the largest possible digits in the actual measuring operation, which are still clearly recognizable even from a greater distance. However, the use of graphic-capable dot matrix displays that are suitable for this is out of the question for cost reasons.

The invention is therefore based on the object of providing a device of the type mentioned at the outset which is capable of displaying digits whose height is greater than the height of a dot matrix field.

This object is achieved by the features characterized in claim 1. In addition to the digits that make up the numerical value of the measurement result, characters from the specified character set can also be used to display information about the unit of measurement of the measurement result or about the selected measuring point.

Advantageous embodiments of the device according to claim 1 are characterized in claims 2 and 3.

The invention is described below with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawings. It shows
Figure 1
the eight basic patterns used to display the digits 0 to 9,
Figure 2
a section of a two-line dot matrix display,
Figure 3
a section of a two-line dot matrix display, in which the uncontrolled points are not shown, and
Figure 4
the numbers 0 to 9 using the basic pattern shown in Figure 1.

Die acht Grundmuster sind mit den Buchstaben A bis H als Bezugszeichen versehen.FIG. 1 shows eight basic patterns which, according to the invention, serve to represent the numbers 0 to 9. The individual dots that form the dot matrix fields are shown as a rectangle, the rectangles corresponding to the respectively activated points being filled with dark color, while the rectangles corresponding to the non-activated points are not filled are. Although this representation somewhat falsifies the overall impression of the characters, it was chosen in FIGS. 1 and 2 in order to clarify the position of the individual point being driven. The eight basic patterns are provided with the letters A to H as reference symbols.

The number "8" is composed of the basic patterns B, C, G and H. In the top line, for comparison, the number "8" from the fixed set of characters of the display module is shown to the left of the number "8" composed of the basic samples. In the lower line to the right of the number "8" made up of the basic patterns, the letter "A" from the fixed set of characters is shown to show how the unit of measurement can be displayed in a simple way together with the numerical value.

However, only the activated points are shown in FIG. 3. This method of representation corresponds better to the overall impression that the viewer of a dot matrix display has than the method of representation chosen in FIG. 2.

Wie in der Figur 3 sind nur noch die angesteuerten Punkte dargestellt.FIG. 4 shows the numbers “0” to “9” using the basic pattern shown in FIG. 1. As in FIG. 3, only the activated points are shown.
