Description

The present invention relates to a display element for seven-segment representation of a number with a medium that can be switched between two optically different states and is arranged between two plates, with transparent front electrodes arranged in seven-segment format and correspondingly arranged, interconnected rear electrodes .

With such display elements, it is desirable that no false indication occurs due to the failure of a control signal. This is particularly necessary when displaying numerical values. When other symbols are displayed, e.g. B. letters forming words, the occurrence of a false display does not necessarily lead to a misinterpretation, since the meaning of what is displayed can often be guessed from the context.

Display elements are known in which measures are provided to avoid incorrect displays of numerical values. EP-A-001 1234 describes a passive electro-optical, numerical display device in liquid crystal technology, in which the respective number to be displayed is made visible in seven-segment format by controlling a number of front electrodes and two rear electrodes, the absence of one of the previous ones or the rear control signals do not lead to a false indication. The chosen solution allows a reduction in the number of necessary transitions of the display element and thus the control signals, but has the disadvantage of requiring special control electronics for controlling the front and rear electrodes.

The object on which the invention is based was to develop a display element which does not permit incorrect display of numerical values, but which only requires conventional, commercially available control electronics.

According to the invention, this is achieved in that five of the seven front electrodes are each divided into two parts or groups of interconnected parts so that each part or group of parts can represent the corresponding segment, and that one part or one Group of parts of three of these five electrodes together from a first control signal, one part or a group of parts of the other two of these five electrodes together from a second control signal and all other parts or groups of parts and the remaining two electrodes each from are controlled by a separate control signal.

A preferred embodiment of the display element according to the invention is characterized in that it has two further electrodes for displaying symbols other than the ten numbers, which are arranged vertically in the middle of the seven-segment format and are designed like the other two electrodes. This design allows additional symbols such as letters to be displayed while maintaining protection against incorrect display of numerical values.

Sieben-Segment-Anzeige. A seven-segment display element for representing the ten numbers is shown schematically in FIGS. Such a display element is known to be in its simplest form of two plates, between which a voltage gradient sensitive medium that can be switched between two optically different states, e.g. B. is a liquid crystal layer. These plates have on the inside electrically conductive coatings in the form of electrodes and their leads. The front, transparent electrodes A, B, C, D, E, F and G are arranged in a manner known per se as in FIG. 2 and form a so-called seven-segment display. The electrodes A, B, C, E and G each consist of two separate rods A'A ", B'B", C'C ", E'E" and G'G ". Each of these front, transparent electrodes or A rear, preferably also transparent, electrode is assigned to the rod.

The two plates with these electrodes are shown schematically in FIG. 1 with the square dashed line 1. The rear electrodes 2 are connected to a polarity switch 5 via a transition 3 and a line 4. The front electrodes A ', B', C ', D, E', F and G 'are connected to the polarity switch 5 via transitions 3 and a respective switch 6 and lines 7, 8. The electrodes A ", B" and G "are jointly connected to the lines 7, 8 via a transition 3 and a single changeover switch 6 and the electrodes C", E "likewise jointly via a transition 3 and a single changeover switch 6. The changeover switches 6 in turn are part of commercially available signal control electronics, not shown.

Figure imgb0003
The resulting reproductions of the nine numbers are shown in FIG. Each number is generated by the following combination of signals:
Figure imgb0003

As can easily be seen from this compilation, the failure of a signal can never lead to a false display.

In many applications, for example in shop scales, such display elements are arranged next to one another to form a display device for displaying multi-digit numbers. After the display of numbers, which must not be wrong under any circumstances, it may happen that other displays are desired that contain symbols other than numbers, e.g. B. letters. These are no longer subject to the condition that they do not have to lead to a false report. Since they are mostly words or common abbreviations of colloquial language, they can still be interpreted correctly thanks to the contact, if they do not appear.

In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 4, a display consisting of nine segments is shown, which allows symbols other than the ten numbers to be represented. Two additional electrodes in the form of rods H and I are added to the display according to FIG. 1, which like rods A ', B', C ', D, E', F and G 'each have their own transition 3 and a changeover switch 6 to be controlled. In this embodiment, the ten numbers are generated and displayed as explained with reference to FIGS. 2, 3 and 4. You are therefore protected against a false report due to signal failure. Other symbols such as B. the capital letters A and B (Fig.5) can also be displayed. The fields of the display device in which such additional symbols are permitted at all depend on the application, e.g. B. in store scales from the calibration regulations.

Fig.7 und 8 zeigen die zehn Zahlen und die Grossbuchstaben A und B, wenn sie mit der Anzeige nach Fig.6 dargestellt werden.6 shows a further exemplary embodiment, which can be implemented as a variant of FIG. 2 and of FIG. 4. In the first case, electrodes H and I are simply omitted. In this exemplary embodiment, the electrodes D, F, H and I each consist of two jointly controlled rods and the electrodes A, B, C, E and G consist of four rods which are controlled in pairs. In Figure 6, the rods that are controlled together are given the same designation. Fig. 7 and 8 show the ten numbers and the capital letters A and B when they are shown with the display according to Fig. 6.

A further exemplary embodiment is shown in FIG. In order to achieve the desired protection against false alarms, in the previous exemplary embodiments the relevant electrodes were divided into two or four rods which are arranged parallel to one another. However, it is easily possible to subdivide each electrode from a number of surface elements that lie one below the other or next to one another. The jointly controlled surface elements are given the same designation in FIG. 9. 10 and 11 show the ten numbers and the capital letters A and B in this representation.

In the case of a display device consisting of several displays according to one of the exemplary embodiments, a decimal place could be added to each display, which is controlled by an additional control signal.
