Abstract

The invention relates to a bottle closure which is suitable, in particular, for champagne bottles having threaded mouths. This bottle closure is unitary made and is of plastic and has a stopper like sealing shank, with a smooth exterior, which penetrates into the neck of the bottle. A cap comprising an internal thread which is adapted to the external thread of the bottle is provided around the sealing shank. The latter projects somewhat beyond the thread of the cap so that, when the bottle closure is opened, a "plop" which is a typical noise of a champagne bottle, is produced. The bottle itself has a bead which, when the bottle closure is in place, is covered by the lower end of the cap. Between the uppermost turn of the thread of the cap and the beginning of the sealing shank on the cap there is provided a sealing lip which, when the bottle closure is in place, bears upon the upper edge of the neck of the bottle.

Description

The invention relates to a bottle stopper, in particular for sparkling wine bottles with a screw-thread mouth, in which the closure body, which is formed in one piece from plastic, has a sealing shaft which plugs into the bottle neck and extends centrally from the bottom inner surface of a cap, the outer wall of which is provided with a thread on its inner surface , which can be brought into engagement with the external thread of the bottle neck, and which sealing shaft protrudes beyond the area bearing the thread, that a bead surrounding the bottle neck is provided at the upper end of the bottle neck and the external thread of the bottle neck is provided between this bead and the upper edge of the bottle neck is, the lower edge of the cap completely or partially covers the bead when the bottle cap is closed.

The long-established cork closures for beverage containers are increasingly being replaced by sealing plugs made of elastic plastic, since, in addition to their cheapness, they also allow the use of automatic sealing and filling machines, because such sealing plugs made of elastic plastic have both their quality and their dimensional accuracy concerns, ensure a constant quality. However, this is particularly necessary for automatic sealing machines, because otherwise stoppages in the operational sequence occur due to plug errors and damage to the container itself cannot be avoided.

If liquids are filled into the container in question, which produce a certain internal pressure after being closed, such as sparkling wine, special safety devices must be taken to prevent the container from opening automatically, for example by pushing out the stopper. Wire brackets or other metal strips are known which are placed around the stopper and are used to hold the stopper to the container mouth.

Since the attachment of such additional closure means also involves an additional operation, which thus makes the filling process more expensive, it is also known to provide the container mouth with an external thread onto which the closure cap is screwed.

Screw-on bottle caps are used for a wide variety of applications (cf. US-PS 3074579, FR-OS 2306895, FR-PS 1030600). However, most of these bottle caps are not suitable for champagne bottles.

The generic bottle caps are mainly used for small sparkling wine bottles of 0.2 l.

A disadvantage of some of the known bottle closures (cf. FR-OS 2306896) is that they do not have the typical "plop" effect when opening, which is characteristic of champagne bottles.

However, bottle closures of the generic type are known which emit a "pop" sound when the champagne bottle is opened (DE-OS-2614538; EP-B 0079552). In this bottle stopper, a sealing rib lies at the level of the last gear of a multi-thread or beyond it on the projecting section. The disadvantage of this bottle stopper is that the "plop" noise is not always guaranteed, despite the relatively elaborate sealing stem, because when the sealing rib reaches the upper edge of the bottle neck, this sealing rib can tilt so that CO₂ already escapes on one side, while on the other side the sealing rib still seals well.

In a known screw closure for a container it is known to provide a curved sealing shaft which does not have a plurality of sealing ribs (DE-OS 3008838). This screw closure also has a sealing lip which, when closed, rests on the upper edge of the container. A disadvantage of this closure, however, is that it cannot cause a "pop" noise because its sealing shaft does not protrude beyond the last turn of the screw closure.

A similar screw closure, in which the sealing shaft is not curved, but fits snugly against the inner wall of a container, is also known (DE-OS 3218671). However, this screw cap cannot be used for champagne bottles because it does not have a dome-shaped cap.

A bottle stopper, which has a sealing shaft with a smooth outer surface, is also known (DE-OS 2833099). However, this bottle stopper does not have an internal thread, but a plurality of radially inwardly directed lamellae on the inside of a cap.

A bottle stopper, which also has a substantially smooth shaft, is known from US-PS 2717728. However, this closure has no internal thread with which it can be screwed onto a bottle.

Furthermore, a bottle stopper is known which has a smooth sealing shaft and which is provided with a rod protruding into a bottle (US Pat. No. 2582721). However, this bottle stopper does not have a sealing lip between the upper end of the sealing shaft and the first turn of its inner thread. It also does not cover the bulge of a bottle neck when the bottle is closed.

Bottle caps with screw threads are also known which have a sealing lip (US Pat. No. 4,090,631, US Pat. No. 4,450,973, US Pat. No. 4,644,088, US Pat. No. 3074579). However, these bottle caps cannot make a "pop" sound because they do not have a stem that goes beyond its screw thread.

The invention has for its object to provide a bottle cap that has a simply constructed sealing shaft and still generates a safe "pop" sound when opening a champagne bottle.

This object is achieved in that the sealing shaft has a smooth outer surface and that a sealing lip is provided between the upper shoulder of the sealing shaft and the first thread of the inner thread, which rests on the upper edge of the bottle when the bottle closure is closed.

The advantage achieved with the invention is in particular that a "pop" effect is produced by the combination of the upper sealing lip with the outer smooth sealing shaft with a very good seal. A special sealing rib is not necessary because it already has the fact that the lower edge of the sealing shaft lies below the last thread of the thread is sufficient for the "plop" effect. In addition, in most cases the bottles have a bulge on the inside of their upper edge, so that the best seal is always where this bulge is located. Another advantage of the invention is that the bottle cap fits the usual bottle thread and no special production of bottles is required. In addition, the closure can be applied very tightly because the lower part of the cap covers the outer bottle neck bead and does not rest on it. The outer bottle neck bead can therefore not take on the function of a stop which prevents the bottle cap from rotating further.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and will be described in more detail below. Show it:
Fig. 1
a 0.2 l champagne bottle with a plastic bottle cap in the unsealed state;
Fig. 2
a bottle neck with a screwed-on bottle cap;
Fig. 3
an illustration as in Figure 2, but with a cut bottle cap.
Fig. 4
a greatly enlarged representation of a cut bottle cap.

This champagne bottle 1 has a bead 4 at the end of its neck 3, above which two gears 5, 6 of a thread 7 can be seen.

The bottle stopper 2 is essentially dome-shaped and has an inward bevel 8 at its lower edge. The surface of the bottle stopper 2 is provided with several elevations 9 which prevent the fingers from slipping off when the stopper 2 is screwed on or unscrewed.

Man erkennt hierbei, daß der die Abschrägung 8 aufweisende Teil des Flaschenverschlusses 2 den Wulst 4 des Flaschenhalses 3 überdeckt.2, the bottle stopper 2 is shown again on a somewhat enlarged scale, namely screwed onto the bottle neck 3. It can be seen here that the part of the bottle stopper 2 having the bevel 8 covers the bead 4 of the bottle neck 3.

Außerdem ist die Wandstärke des Flaschenhalses 3 durch Strichelung angedeutet.FIG. 3 shows a representation largely corresponding to FIG. 2, although the bottle closure 2 is shown in section. In addition, the wall thickness of the bottle neck 3 is indicated by dashed lines.

As can be seen from this illustration, the upper edge of the bottle neck 3 has an inward curvature 10. The bottle stopper 2 has on its inside winding passages 11, 12 which engage in the spaces between the passages 5, 6 of the bottle neck 3. A sealing shaft 13 entering the bottle neck 3 like a plug extends vertically downward from the bottom 14 of a cap 25 of the bottle stopper 2. Between the upper turn 11 of the cap 25 and the sealing shaft 13 there is a sealing lip 15 which, when the bottle 1 is closed, rests on the upper edge 16 of the bottle neck 3.

It is clearly visible here that the bottle cap essentially consists of the sealing shaft 13 and the cap 25. It can also be seen that the lower edge 17 of the sealing shaft 13 is arranged below the lowermost turn 12, but above the lower edge 18 of the cap 25.

In the lower region of the sealing shaft 13, a bevel 19 is provided, which facilitates the insertion of the sealing shaft 13 into the bottle neck. The outer surface 20 of the sealing shaft 13 is smooth and essentially parallel to the imaginary longitudinal axis of the bottle stopper 2. The inner surface 21 of the sealing shaft 13 is also smooth and runs parallel to the outer surface 20.

When the sealing shaft 13 is unscrewed from the bottle neck, the lower region of this shaft 13 still remains in the bottle neck, while the last passage 12 of the internal thread of the cap 25 is no longer in engagement with the external thread of the bottle neck 3. The CO₂ pressure in the bottle 1 causes in this situation that the bottle cap 2 is suddenly pushed out and causes a "pop" noise. The contact pressure of the sealing shaft 13 against the inner wall of the bottle neck 3 is sufficient for such a "plop" noise, especially since in most bottles the curvature 10 causes an increased contact pressure to the end.

Claims (10)

1. A bottle closure for a bottle neck (3) having a screw thread (7) and comprising a bead (4) surrounding it at its upper end, whereby the external screw thread (7) of the bottle neck (3) is provided between said bead (4) and the upper edge of the neck of the bottle, comprising the following features:
a) a unitary locking body (2) made of plastic comprises a sealing shank (13) penetrating in the way of a stopper into the neck (3) of the bottle, the sealing shank (13) running centrally from the inner bottom surface (14) of a cap (25) the inner end wall of which carries a thread (11, 12) which can be engaged with the external thread (7) of the neck (3) of the bottle;
b) the sealing shank (13) projects beyond the area of the inner end wall carrying the thread (11, 12);
c) between the upper end of the sealing shank (13) and the first turn (11) of the internal thread a sealing lip (15) is provided;
d) the inner diameter of the lower edge of the cap (25) is larger than the outer diameter of the bead (4);
e) the cap (2) is provided with an area of curvature at its outer surface whereby the sealing lip (15) runs from the inner surface of the cap (2) being opposite to the area of curvature;
characterized by the following features:
f) the lower edge (18) of the cap (25) has a larger distance from the inner end surface (14) than the lower edge (17) of the sealing shank (13);
g) the sealing shank (13) has a smooth outer surface (20) over its whole outer periphery which runs concentrically with respect to the imaginary longitudinal axis of the cap (2).
2. A bottle closure according to claim 2, characterized in that the end of the sealing shank (13) which penetrates into the neck (3) of the bottle comprises a chamfer (19).
3. A bottle closure according to claim 1, characterized in that the sealing lip (15) comprises an inner periphery (23) which is parallel to the outer surface of the sealing shank (13) and an outer periphery (24) which is inclined thereto.
4. A bottle closure according to claim 1, characterized in that from the inner surface (14) to the opposite end (18) the cap (25) is about one third larger than the sealing shaft (13) so that the sealing shaft (13) is arranged completely within the bottle closure.
5. A bottle closure according to claim 1, characterized in that between the bead (4) and the upper edge (16) of the neck (3) of the bottle at most three grooves (5, 6) are arranged which constitute the external thread (7) of the neck (3) of the bottle.
6. A bottle closure according to claim 1, characterized in that the neck (3) of the bottle comprises a bead (10) inside the upper edge (16) thereof.
7. A bottle closure according to claim 1, characterized in that between the end of the sealing shank (13) and the sealing lip (15) a space is provided into which the sealing lip (15) can be pressed when the closure (2) is in place.
8. A bottle closure according to claim 1, characterized in that the surface of its cap comprises a plurality of ribs (9) extending from the bottom to the top.
