Abstract

The wrist watch case of this invention includes a caseband-back provided with supports for retaining a movement assembled from above the caseband. The caseband-back is provided with a circular opening having a diameter substantially greater than the diameter of a circle circumscribing the movement. The opening is blocked by a cap which is fixed to the caseband-back by fastening means arranged at the exterior of said circumscribing circle and at a level located above the lower face of the movement. The cap is provided with notches arranged and adapted to cooperate with a wrench supplied to the watch user thereby to open or close the cap and thus permit changing the battery. The wrench may form an integral part of the bracelet buckle.

Description

The present invention relates to a wristwatch box comprising a backband made in one piece with an enlarging circle equipped with supports for supporting a movement mounted by the top of the middle and provided with needles for displaying the time, said movement being powered by a battery, a circular opening made in the bottom of said case-back by which the battery can be inserted or removed and a removable cover mounted leaktight by means of a gasket on said bottom for close said opening.

A clear distinction should be made here between a watch case comprising a middle part closed off by a large diameter bottom where this bottom must be removed in order to access the battery, and a watch case comprising a back case middle fitted with a simple cover giving access to the battery.

The first embodiment is described for example in patent EP-B-0 024 364 (US 4 362 396). In this construction, the movement is mounted from the bottom of the middle part, which is itself closed off by a screwed or pressurized bottom. The bottom must be removed to change the battery and this operation can only be done by a skilled person equipped with special tools and who, at the same time, will take care to retain the movement to prevent it from escapes from the middle. This execution has the advantage of taking up little space in thickness since the back is hung on the middle in a place located above the underside of the movement. But the battery is not accessible to everyone, as we have just seen, which can be felt as a disadvantage especially today where certain cheap watches commonly offer this possibility.

The second mode of execution is exposed for example in the utility models JP-1 131 545 and JP-1 231 593. In these cases the watch case is equipped with a case back which is sometimes called a monocoque case, where the movement is mounted from the top of the middle. The documents cited show that the middle is equipped with an enlargement circle and supports to support the movement. In the bottom of said case-back, an opening is made which is just sufficient to change the battery. This opening is closed by a cover screwed into the bottom. This way of doing things has the advantage of simplifying the mounting of the watch on automatic transfer machines. In fact, all the loading operations take place on the same side, the top of the watch, and there is no need to turn the part over to equip it with its constituent components. This second embodiment also has the advantage of offering a bottom which takes up little space in thickness. In addition, the battery cover can be removed by any user and without the need for special tools. Generally the cover has a slot into which a coin can be inserted. The detail of such a construction is shown in patent GB-A-1 408 610. It is immediately seen however that this cover takes up a large space in height first because of the space which must be provided for the receiving slot the coin, then because of the thickness that must be made for the thread and the gasket. Finally this way of doing things is unsightly due to the wart that the cover presents.

To remedy the drawbacks which have just been mentioned, the document GB-A-1,568,475 proposes a large diameter cover provided with a notch by which the cover can be removed, for example by means of a coin. . In this document, the notch is no longer located under the stack but next to it so that the thickness on stack of the movement is not increased by the presence of this notch. However, the position of said notch is such that it requires a free space between the movement and the inner side of the cover, a space which ultimately results in an increase in the thickness of the watch in all cases where the thickness of the stack is substantially within the thickness of the movement. As will be seen in the description of the present invention, no space is provided between the cover and the movement by the fact that the means for unlocking the cover are located outside the periphery of this movement, which has the effect of minimizing the thickness of the watch.

To allow the construction proposed in the description which follows, use will be made of a bayonet closure preferably, closure of a type similar to that described in patent CH-A-374 937 where the means for fixing the cover to the middle part are located at a level above the underside of the movement. However, this is a mechanical movement watch case where the back must be removed not for changing a battery but for mounting or repairing the movement and where access to the interior is not possible that a skilled person equipped with special tools as was said about the first embodiment cited in the preamble of this application and as written in the cited patent where the use of a gallows is mentioned. Moreover, in this patent, the concern to offer a thin watch is not apparent since an important day persists between the back and the movement.

Thus the present invention proposes to eliminate the drawbacks listed above by the means which appear in the claims.

  • FIG. 6a is a section along line VI-VI of FIG. 5 and shows a first variant of the second embodiment and
  • - Figure 6b is a section along line VI-VI of Figure 5 and shows a second variant of the second embodiment.

As can be seen in Figure 1, the watch case has a case-back 1 made in one piece with an enlarging circle 2 equipped with supports 3 to support a movement 4. The movement causes the hands to 5 hours and 6 minutes sketched here in dashed lines. These needles surmount a dial not shown and which is housed in the opening delimited by the wall 7. On the case-back 1 is mounted a bezel provided with a crystal according to methods known from the prior art. Dial, flange, bezel and crystal have not been shown here as they are not affected by the present invention. Movement 4, which generally includes a stepping motor controlled by a quartz, is powered by a battery 8 which is outlined by the dashed lines in FIG. 1.

As already mentioned above, a box of the type which has just been described, with mounting of the movement from above, may have a bottom made in one piece with the middle part. In this bottom is then formed an opening to allow the change of the battery, opening which is closed by a cover. This is what is actually found in the construction presented in FIG. 1 where the removal of the cover referenced 9 gives direct access to the battery 8. With the exception, however, of what is found in the prior art , the cover 9 of the present invention covers the entire movement 4 instead of covering only the single battery contained in this movement.

As can be seen in FIG. 1, the removable cover 9 is mounted leaktight on the backband 1 by means of a sealing gasket 10, the latter being pinched between the cover 9 and a groove 16 formed in the bottom 11 of the backband 1 when the cover is in place.

If we now also refer to FIG. 2 which is a bottom view of the case back 1 drawn on a scale reduced by half compared to the scale used for FIG. 1, we see that the opening 12 made in the backband 1 is circular, that this opening is coaxial with the axis of the hands 5, 6 and has a diameter substantially larger than the diameter of the circle 13 circumscribing the movement 8, the circle 13 being shown in phantom in Figure 2. Figure 2 also shows the enlargement circle 2 equipped with supports 3 against which the movement which is not represented here but which is imaginable by the contour 14 of the opening in which it enters and by the stack 8 sketched in phantom. This is a barrel movement, which explains the oblong shape of the opening 14. We could thus have a round movement, in which case the opening 14 would merge with the circumscribed circle 13.

The cover 9 is made integral with the backband by fixing means situated outside the circumscribed circle 13 and at a level situated above the lower face 15 of the movement 4. These fixing means, so to speak enveloping the movement in its periphery, bring the fixing of the cover in the thickness of the middle and no longer in the thickness of the bottom as was provided in the prior art discussed above, hence the obvious gain in space in the thickness watch overall.

These fixing means could consist of a thread forming part of the cover and raised with respect to its inner face, a thread which could cooperate with a tapping made in the walls of the opening 12. However, bayonet fixing means have been preferred here. easier to implement. To this end, the cover 9 carries a stiffening circle 17 made in one piece with it, this circle comprising at least two bent wings 18 cooperating with as many notched flanges 19 formed in the backband 1. Figure 2 shows up a case back 1 provided with three arched inlets 20, 21 and 22 and three notched edges 19, 23 and 24. Each of the notched edges has a gently sloping entrance followed by a flat, the passage of a plane to the other being represented by the dotted line 25. Thus when it is a question of locking the cover 9 on the backband 1, the respective wings 18 of the cover 9 are introduced into the arched inlets 20, 21 and 22 turns the cover clockwise by compressing the lining 10 in its housing 16. The wings 18 then engage on the notched edges referenced 19, 23 and 24 respectively until they abut against the edges referenced respectively 26, 27 and 28.

Referring again to FIG. 1, it can be seen that the wing 18 cooperates with the flange 19 at a level located within the thickness of the movement 4. The same applies to the seal 10 also located at above the lower face 15 of the movement. These methods therefore strongly constitute to minimize the thickness of the box. When the cover is removed, we will observe that the movement remains in place and that we have every opportunity to change the battery 8 contained in the movement. This battery is fitted with its usual contact flanges and may or may not be retained in its housing. If it is not retained, it will be retained by the cover once it is in place. The fact that the removal of the cover uncovers the entire movement can be taken advantage of by the watchmaker who then has access to the zipper screw, which makes it possible to easily disassemble the control rod. Finally it should be noted that in a preferred solution the caseband and the cover are made of plastic, but nothing would prevent the metal cover for example.

According to the invention, the cover further carries means capable of being actuated by the wearer of the watch to open and close said cover. According to a first embodiment shown in Figure 1, these means consist of two notches 29 and 30 formed on the outer side of the cover 9. These notches can be cylindrical or of any shape and are arranged on the same diameter. FIG. 1 also shows that the notches 29 and 30 are located opposite the fixing means carried on the inner side of the cover or, if preferred, opposite the stiffening circle 17 and this for obvious reasons of solidity and of the cover. In the notches can engage the ends of the branches of a U-shaped key not shown in the drawing and delivered to the purchase of the watch.

The U-shaped key just mentioned can be lost by the wearer of the watch. This is the reason why, according to a proposal of the invention, it will be preferable to integrate this key into the loop of the bracelet. Figure 3 shows such a solution. In this figure the watch case, the bottom 11 of which can be seen and the cover 9 secured to this bottom, is equipped with a bracelet represented by its strands 40 and 41. The strand 40 has a loop 42 provided with a pin 44 which cooperates with one of the holes 43 of the strand 41. We see that each branch of the loop 42 has an asperity 45, 48 intended to cooperate with a notch 29, 30 formed in the cover 9. In the particular case of FIG. 3 the asperities 45, 48 are located in the extension of the branches of the loop 42.

In this case, the roughness is no longer located in the extension of the branches of the loop but perpendicular to said branches in the form of pins referenced 46 and 47.

It will be observed that the solutions recommended by FIGS. 3 and 4 somehow require a cover 9 of large diameter. Indeed, the covers of the prior art have a too small diameter, so that the notches 29, 30 could not be far enough apart to receive the roughness of a loop of normal size.

Figures 5, 6a and 6b show a second embodiment of the invention. Here the cover 9 secured in the bottom 11 is devoid of the notches 29, 30 which characterized the first embodiment of the invention. The cover 9 carries grooves 50 arranged radially on the outside of said cover and in the periphery of the latter. These grooves or grooves, arranged in bumps (Figures 6a) or hollow (Figure 6b) on the cover allow you to set up or remove this cover simply with your fingers. In this embodiment, a key is no longer necessary.
