Definitions

  • the invention relates to a cover of an ignition distributor of an internal combustion engine comprising means for fixing and connecting the end of at least one cable for high voltage electric current.
  • the internal combustion engine ignition distributors have a cover or head of insulating material receiving the ends of the cables bringing the high voltage electric current from the ignition coil and transmitting the current pulses to each of the spark plugs successively. .
  • Each of these high-voltage electric cables must be connected to a terminal made of conductive material located inside the cover of the distributor. For this, we generally use a metal tip attached to the end of the cable, and electrically connected to the conductive core of the cable. The assembly is then mounted in a socket or on an olive electrically connected to the corresponding terminal arranged inside the cover of the dispenser. It is therefore necessary to provide for the attachment of a metal end piece to the end of the cable, by an operation which is difficult to automate, in its industrial practice.
  • a distributor comprising a distributor body in which are engaged removable studs having a tip-shaped end portion.
  • a distributor cover screwed onto the distributor body allows the ends of electrical cables to be fixed to the distributor and to make an electrical contact between the metallic core of the cables and the pads of the distributor.
  • Such a distributor does not allow the cables to be assembled quickly and automatically and to obtain very secure fixing of the cables on the distributor.
  • the object of the invention is therefore to propose a cover for an ignition distributor of an internal combustion engine comprising means for fixing and connecting the end of at least one cable for high voltage electric current. consisting of a metal core surrounded by an insulator, these fixing means comprising at least one clip allowing the cutting of the cable insulator, distributor cover which allows the assembly of the high voltage cable by a simple and easily automated operation and improve cable fixation.
  • the distributor cover comprises at least one cylindrical housing formed in the cover to receive the end portion of the cable, at least one blind opening of flat shape opening on its internal face, arranged transversely with respect to housing the cable and intersecting it and a clip of conductive material whose shape corresponds to the shape of the opening having a slot over its entire thickness, in its longitudinal direction corresponding to the longitudinal direction of the opening, the width is at most equal to the diameter of the cable core, part bevel end intersected by the end of the slot constituting a means of cutting the insulation of the cable in place in its housing, when the clip is forcefully inserted into the correspondingly shaped opening, the conductive core of the cable then coming into contact with the lateral edges of the slot and a part constituting an electrical contact pad projecting from the interior surface of the cover, when the clip is in place in the opening, at the inside the cover.
  • FIGs 1 and 2 we see a dispenser cover 1 of an insulating plastic material such as a resin, produced by molding.
  • the cover has two fixing lugs 1a and 1b at its periphery and five conduits 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d and 2e whose inlet openings are arranged laterally and which each receive a cable 4 making it possible to supply the distributor or collect from the distributor a high voltage current.
  • Each of the conduits 2a to 2e comprises a housing 3 whose internal diameter is substantially equal to the diameter of the corresponding cable 4.
  • the successive cables arranged in the conduits 2a to 2e will be designated by the references 4a to 4e.
  • Each of these cables is made up of a metallic core, for example made of copper or brass, surrounded by an insulator.
  • the central cable 4c is connected at its end, not shown, opposite the distributor, to the ignition coil of the engine on which the distributor is mounted.
  • the other four cables 4a, 4b, 4d and 4e have their ends, not shown, located opposite the distributor, each connected to a spark plug of the engine.
  • a rotor 6 is mounted on the body of the distributor (not shown), so as to rotate around the axis of the distributor and in the direction of arrow 7.
  • the rotor 6 comprises a conductive element making it possible to successively supply, during its rotation, each of the cables connected to a spark plug from the cable connected to the ignition coil.
  • each of the cables 4 is electrically connected to an electrical contact pad located under the distributor cover 1, that is to say on the side of its internal face 1c.
  • Each of the studs is formed by the end part of a clip 8 obtained by cutting and folding a brass plate.
  • the staples 8 can be formed according to one of the three types shown in Figures 3a, 3b and 3c.
  • the clips 8a and 8b shown respectively in Figures 3a and 3b allow the connection of cables connected to a spark plug and the constitution of a corresponding stud under the cover 1; the clip 8c shown in Figure 3c allows the connection of the cable 4c connected to the ignition coil and the constitution of a stud coming into contact with the rotor 6, along its axis.
  • the clip 8 comprises, over a part of its length, a slot 9 having an end portion 9a of circular shape located substantially mid-length of the clip 8, the second end of the slot 9 opening onto the extreme edge 10 of the 'clip, opposite its part constituting the electrical contact pad.
  • the width d of the slot 9 is preferably slightly less than the diameter of the metal core 14 of the cable 4.
  • the edge 10 of the clip 8 constitutes a cutting edge, the end part 11 of the clip being machined in the form of a bevel. This part 11 is separated into two halves 11a and 11b by the slot 9.
  • a blind opening 18 is provided in the cover 1, so as to open out onto the inner face 1c of this cover.
  • the opening 18 has a flat shape corresponding to the shape of the fixing and connection part of a clip 8, for example as visible in FIG. 4.
  • the flat opening 18 is arranged transversely and perpendicular to the housing 3 of the cable and intersects this housing, the cross section of which is inscribed in the opening 18.
  • the end of the cable is first introduced into the housing 3, until it stops on the bottom of the housing.
  • a clip 8 of suitable shape is introduced into the corresponding opening 18 (arrow 20 in FIGS. 6 and 7), then forcibly engaged until the bottom of the opening 18.
  • the pushing on the clip 8 during its engagement causes the cutting of the cable insulation 4 by the cutting edge 10.
  • the parts 11a and 11b of the clip 8 pass on either side of the conductive core 14 of the cable which is thus introduced inside slot 9.
  • the ends 13 of the cutting edge 10, towards the inside on either side of the slot 9, are rounded so as to avoid deterioration of the conductive core 14 of the cable, at the time of its introduction into the slot 9.
  • the width d of the slot 9 is less than the diameter of the conductive core 14, the latter may undergo a certain deformation inside the slot 9 (figure 4).
  • the slot 9 passing through the clip 8 of flat shape over its entire thickness makes two parallel branches in this clip, on either side of the slot 9, between which the core 14 is inserted.
  • the elasticity of the two branches of the clip and / or the deformation of the core 14 make it possible to make a very good electrical contact between the core 14 and the edges of the slot 9, this slot having a width slightly less than the diameter of l soul 14.
  • the corresponding electrical contact pad remains projecting with respect to the interior surface 1c of the cover 1 of the dispenser.
  • the stud 16 is constituted by a folding of a side portion of the clip 8 having a substantially cylindrical shape. This stud 16 makes it possible to make electrical contact with the conductive part of the rotor 6 at the time of its passage, as it is visible in FIG. 1.
  • the stud 17 is constituted by a cylindrical carbon attached to the end of a spring 14 itself mounted and brought into abutment in a cylindrical folding 12 produced at the end of the clip 8.
  • the carbon 17 and the spring 14 have been shown before their mounting in the cylindrical folding 12 of the clip 8.
  • the flat opening 18 formed in the cover 1 comprises, in its part opening onto the face 1c of the cover of the dispenser, a cylindrical opening which allows the cylindrical part 12 of the clip 8 to be received.
  • the end of the carbon 17 constituting an electrical contact pad protrudes relative to the part 12 of the clip and comes into contact with the upper conductive part of the rotor 6.
  • the end part of the rotor arm comes into contact, as explained above, successively with the studs 16 of type 8a staples and with the studs 16 'of type 8b staples.
  • FIG 8 there is shown an alternative embodiment of the fixing portion and connection of a clip 8 and the corresponding flat opening 18.
  • This opening has, in its blind end part, inside the cover 1, a narrowing 18a whose width is less than the width of the end part of the clip 8.
  • This narrowing 18a is separated from the running part of the opening 8 by inclined surfaces 18b.
  • the clip 8 has an end portion of reduced width, this width being however greater than the width of the narrowed portion 18a of the opening 18.
  • two inclined edges are produced. 21 which come, at the end of engagement of the clip 8 in the opening 18, in abutment on the inclined surfaces 18b of the opening 18. This thus brings the two branches of the clip 8 closer together and effective tightening of the conductive part 14 of the cable, the electrical contact of which is thus improved with the clip 8.
  • the distributor cover according to the invention therefore has the advantage of making it possible to achieve very quickly, very easily and very efficiently, the fixing and connection of the high-voltage cables of the distributor.
  • the cables cannot come loose under the effect of vibrations, the clip being perfectly caught in the cable insulation.
  • the staples may have any shape desired for producing electrical contact pads adapted to their use.
  • the slot in the end portion of the clip may have a width close to the diameter of the conductive core of the cable, this conductive core then being only slightly or not deformed at the time of its introduction into the slot. However, this width must be at most equal to the diameter of the conductive core for an electrical contact to be ensured.
  • the staples can be made of any material having good electrical conductivity and sufficient hardness and elasticity.
  • the invention applies to any distributor of an internal combustion engine regardless of the number of high-voltage cables fixed and connected to the distributor.
