Description

The present invention relates to a device for connecting an antenna, in particular for a motor vehicle, with its associated coaxial cable.

It is known that motor vehicles, which are fitted with a radio unit, generally carry an external antenna which should be connected by cable to the radio receiver unit. To avoid interference from reception, the cable that is used is a coaxial cable which has an external protective sheath inside of which is an internal sheath, a ground braid being disposed between the two sheaths; in the internal sheath is placed an electroconductive wire which constitutes the core of the cable and which is connected to the receiving antenna on the one hand, and to the radio receiving station, on the other hand; anti-interference signals transmitted by the cable core is provided by the metal braid that is connected to the vehicle ground. Such a cable is generally connected to the antenna by a connector constituted by a plastic ring, one base of which carries a washer forming a ground terminal and the other base of which carries a disc forming an antenna terminal; the connector is fixed to the body by a bolt secured to the external antenna, said bolt passing through the body and the ring of the connector; the antenna lug is tightened by the bolt nut and the earth lug is applied against the internal face of the vehicle body, the antenna base being on the external face of said body, in line with the fixing bolt. The ground lug has a tab thanks to which the mechanical connection between the cable and the connector is ensured by crimping; this crimping is carried out on the ground braid of the cable, which has been turned outside of said cable at the level where it is to be carried out: this ensures the grounding of the braid of the cable. Between this first crimping and the plastic ring of the connector, the internal sheath of the cable is stripped, so that there can be interference from radio reception at this level; it has therefore already been proposed, for example in French patent application 2,563,946, to perform a second crimping on the internal sheath by means of two wings provided for this purpose on the crimping lug of the earth terminal and to cap the connector up to the level of this second crimping by a metal cap which covers the area where the cable core is electrically linked to the antenna terminal of the connector.

In such a device of the prior art, the electrical connection between the core of the cable and the antenna terminal of the connector is ensured by welding the core to the antenna terminal. This technique therefore requires that the internal sheath of the cable be cut so as to let out a certain length of the wire which constitutes the core and that this wire is then welded to the antenna terminal of the connector. An additional operation is moreover necessary due to the fact that the core of the cable is a very fine wire which, inside the internal sheath, must be supported by a support element; according to a first technique, the support element is a plastic rod, which is wound in a very wide pitch helix around the wire constituting the core so as to maintain it substantially along the axis of the sheath; according to a second technique, the internal sheath is filled with a plastic foam, which forms the support element of the core. In both cases, the aforementioned support element must be separated from the core in order to be able to correctly weld the core to the antenna terminal. It can therefore be seen that making the electrical connection between the cable core and the antenna terminal of the connector is an operation which lends itself extremely poorly to automation.

The object of the present invention is to provide a device for connecting an antenna with its associated coaxial cable which eliminates the soldering operation, which was previously necessary to ensure the electrical connection between the core and the antenna terminal of the connector. The elimination of the weld also makes it possible to avoid having to remove the support element in the weld zone and it is therefore easy to envisage an automatic method for making the connection of the coaxial cable with its associated connector.

According to the invention, the electrical connection is made with a contact element which is introduced into the internal sheath of the cable and by providing, in the area of space where the core and the contact element are opposite. screw, at least one protuberance. It is also possible to crimp in said space zone; at the time of crimping and whatever the position of the core relative to the contact element inside the internal sheath, the crushing due to crimping applies the core of the cable to the contact element . The support element does not constitute a hindrance for the electrical contact due to the fact that this support element can creep in the hollows, on either side of the protuberance, under the effect of the crimping pressure, this which would not be the case if at least one protuberance was not provided in this area.

Of course, to ensure the reliability of the electrical connection, which can be obtained even without crimping at the level of said space zone, it is preferred to provide a succession of protuberances separated from each other by hollow zones, the element of contact having sufficient dimensions for the cable core to be pressed against it; Similarly, so that the protrusions can play their role optimally, it is expected that, seen in plan, they extend over most of the area concerned.

It was found that by implementing a connection device according to the invention, it was possible to reliably ensure the electrical connection between the core of a coaxial cable and the antenna terminal of a connector of the type indicated above. Given that with the device according to the invention, the electrical connections, both for the ground braid and for the core, are obtained by insertion of the contact element, possibly combined with crimping, it is extremely easy to 'automate the manufacturing process, which leads to considerably lower cost prices.

The present invention therefore has as its object the new industrial product that constitutes an antenna connection device, in particular for a motor vehicle, with its associated coaxial cable, said coaxial cable comprising an external sheath, which contains an internal sheath surrounded by a ground braid, said internal sheath containing a conductive core supported by a support element, said core being electrically connected to the antenna by an antenna terminal, said ground braid being electrically connected to ground by a ground lug, the antenna and ground lugs being mounted on an insulating ring to form an antenna connector, the ground braid being folded down outside the outer sheath of the cable at a first crimping of the ground lug on said cable, said ground lug further forming an entourage of the core in an area between the first crimping and the insulating ring of the connector, this entourage ensuring the anti-interference to the immediate vicinity of the antenna terminal, characterized in that the antenna terminal is associated with a contact element, which is electrically linked to it and which penetrates into the internal sheath, the area of space, where the contact element and the core face each other, comprising at least one protuberance formed on one of the walls delimiting said space zone, said protuberance ensuring the electrical contact between the soul of the cable and the contact element and extending, in plan view, over the major part of said contact element.

The contact element can penetrate the internal sheath at a crimping zone, the space zone where the contact element and the core face each other undergoing crimping.

Preferably, this contact element has, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the internal sheath, at least for its part which penetrates into said internal sheath, a dimension (width) determined so as to allow jamming of the core. of the conductor, and where appropriate, of the plastic rod forming the support element, by the internal sheath which may or may not be deformed. This dimension may be slightly less than the internal diameter of the sheath.

Provision may be made for the surround between the zone of the first crimping and the insulating ring of the connector, either to form a tunnel around the core, or else to form a second crimping.

Provision may also be made for the protuberance (s) to be formed either on the contact element or on the internal sheath.

According to a first alternative embodiment, the contact element is integral with the antenna terminal.

According to a first embodiment of said first variant, the contact element is a part of the antenna terminal, the two being obtained in one piece. Provision may be made for the contact element to be a wavy tongue; one can also provide that the contact element forms a tube obtained by bending, the walls of the tube having been stamped before folding to form a succession of protuberances and hollows inside the tube. It is also conceivable to produce the contact element in the form of any tongue and to ensure that the punches of the second crimping include bosses making appear on the internal sheath, at the time of crimping, at least one protuberance in the direction of the cable core.

According to a second embodiment of the first variant, the contact element is an insert on the antenna terminal. In this case, the contact element may be a rod having surface undulations and having its head fixed on the antenna terminal.

Advantageously, in the case where the support element is a plastic rod wound in a helix around the constituent wire of the core, the contact element, formed by a tongue or a wavy rod, has a length greater than the pitch of the helix formed by the plastic rod.

According to a second variant of the device according to the invention, the contact element is an electrically conductive sleeve independent of the antenna terminal, a first part of which penetrates into the internal sheath in line with the first crimping and internally comprises at least one protuberance, the core of the cable coming inside said first part of the sleeve, and a second part of which is disposed in line with the surround and receives internally a connecting lug secured to the antenna terminal; the connecting lug of the antenna terminal can form a single piece with said terminal; the sleeve may consist of a bent stamped sheet to obtain a substantially cylindrical shape; the part of the sleeve, which is in line with the surround, is covered by an insulating sheath and undergoes crimping giving rise to a second crimping. In a variant, the part of the sleeve, which is located in line with the surround, is plugged into the connection tab, the device therefore comprising only one crimping and the insulating sheath not being necessary.

All the above embodiments envisaged can be used when the support element of the cable core is a plastic rod. In the case where the support element of the cable core is a foam filling, which occupies the entire free internal volume of the internal sheath, it is preferred to use an embodiment in which the contact element has a shape tubular, whether or not integral with the antenna terminal; indeed, the introduction of such a contact element into the internal sheath makes it possible to repel or perforate the foam which constitutes the support element and, consequently, to strip the core of the cable which is placed at the inside the tube or sleeve cons tituant the contact element. Provision may be made for the part of the contact element which penetrates the internal sheath to have a bevel-shaped end to facilitate its introduction into the internal sheath.

The device according to the invention can advantageously be used with a connector of the type described in French patent application 2,563,946. In this case, the connector ring has a substantially cylindrical shape, one of its bases being covered by a washer which forms the ground terminal and the other by a disc which forms the antenna terminal, the assembly being covered by a metal anti-interference cap fixed on legs electrically connected to the terminal mass. The connector can be fixed to a motor vehicle body by a bolt, which passes through the connector ring along its axis and which is electrically and mechanically linked to the external antenna of the vehicle, the nut of the bolt resting on the terminal d antenna while the ground lug carries indentations which are crushed against the bodywork by tightening the bolt.

To better understand the object of the invention, we will now describe, by way of purely illustrative and nonlimiting examples, several modes of reaction. reading shown in the accompanying drawing.

Referring to Figures 1 to 4, we see that we have designated by 1 the body of a motor vehicle which carries an antenna base 2; the antenna strand has been designated by 3 and it is electrically connected in the base 2 to a bolt 4, which allows the attachment of the antenna to the bodywork and the simultaneous attachment of the corresponding connector. This connector comprises a plastic ring 5 of substantially cylindrical shape; on the base of this ring 5, which faces the body 1, a washer 6 is arranged which constitutes the ground terminal; the ground lug 6 carries indentations 7 and it is extended by a crimping lug 8 successively comprising two pairs of crimping wings, namely the crimping wings 9, which are the furthest from the ring 5, and the wings of crimping 10, which are the closest. On that of its bases which is not occupied by the antenna terminal 6, the ring 5 carries a washer 11, which extends parallel to the axis of the ring 5 by a lug 12, the end of which is folded at right angles to constitute the contact element 13. The connector constituted by the assembly 5, 6, 11 is retained below the base 2 by means of the bolt 4, the nut 4 a of which tightens the connector, by by means of an elastic washer 14, against the automobile body 1, so that the indentations 7 of the ground terminal 6 ensure good contact of the terminal 6 with the mass of the vehicle.

The connector provides the link between the antenna and the coaxial cable designated by 15 as a whole. The cable 15 comprises an external sheath 16, which contains a coaxial internal sheath 17; between the two sheaths is disposed a metal braid 20; inside the internal sheath 17 is an electrically conductive wire, which constitutes the core 18 of the cable; this wire being very thin, it is mechanically reinforced by a support element constituted by a plastic rod 19; the rod 19 is wound, according to a helix with large pitch, around the core 18. The metal braid 20 provides anti-interference; at the end of the cable 15 which is connected to the connector, the external sheath 16 is cut so as to strip part of the internal sheath 17 and the metal braid 20 is turned over on the outside of the external sheath 16.

L'état des différentes pièces du dispositif selon l'invention en ce point du montage est représenté sur la figure 2.The crimping wings 9 of the ground lug 6 are closed to form a cylindrical sleeve even before the ground lug is used to form the connector. The connector is then mounted by assembling the parts 6, 5 and 11, the tongue which constitutes the contact element 13 passing between the wings 10, which have not yet been closed. The end of the cable 15, which has been prepared as above indicated, is then presented by threading it into the cylinder formed by the wings 9 previously bent. The end of the outer sheath 16 is received in the cylinder formed by the wings 9; the internal sheath 17 is housed between the wings 10, the tongue 13 penetrating inside the internal sheath 17. In this embodiment, it can be seen that the tongue 13 has a substantially rectangular shape, the width of which is slightly less than the diameter internal of the internal sheath 17; over its entire width, the tongue 13 has undulations, which reveal a succession of vertices or protuberances 13 a and hollows 13 b . When the tongue 13 is introduced into the internal sheath 17, the position of the core 18 relative to the tongue 13 is random. The state of the different parts of the device according to the invention at this point in the assembly is shown in FIG. 2.

We then proceed to crimping. The first crimping is carried out on the wings 9 and ensures contact between the ground braid 20, returned to the outside of the outer sheath 16, and the grounding lug 6. The second crimping is carried out on the wings 10, which are closed around the internal sheath 17. Under the crimping pressure, the plastic rod 19 flows in the recesses 13 b and the core 18 of the cable is blocked between the protrusions 13 a and the internal sheath 17, itself tightened by the wings 10. The electrical connection of the core 18 with the antenna terminal 11 is thus provided in a completely reliable manner. In addition, the wings 10 complete the anti-interference in the area where the internal sheath 17 does not is more surrounded by the ground braid 20. The anti-interference is supplemented, in a known manner, by covering the entire connector by means of a metal cap 21, which is clipped onto tabs 22 electrically connected to the terminal mass 6.

It can be seen that the electrical connections of the connector with the antenna cable were made only by crimping, which makes it possible to automate the process of connecting the cable with its associated connector and which therefore makes it possible to reduce the price of comes back from this subset.

In Figure 5, there is shown another embodiment of the tongue, which constitutes the contact element of the antenna terminal; the figure only shows, in plan, a partial view of the antenna terminal 31 and its associated tongue 33. It can be seen that the tongue 33 has undulations perpendicular to its mean plane as was the case for the tongue 13; the vertices of these undulations were designated by 33 a and the troughs by 33 b . But, in addition, provision was made for the edges of the tongue to also be wavy while these edges were rectilinear in the embodiment of Figures 1 to 4; the tongue 33 therefore has on its two longitudinal edges protrusions 33 c and hollow areas 33 d . All the other characteristics of this embodiment are the same as those which have been described for the production of FIGS. 1 to 4.

In Figure 6, there is shown another embodiment of the antenna terminal; this figure shows a section along the axis of the antenna terminal, the contact element of said antenna terminal not being cut. The antenna terminal has been designated by 41 as a whole; it has a tab 45 substantially perpendicular to its plane; at the end of the lug 45 is fixed a contact element designated by 43. The contact element 43 is a rod, the external surface of which has undulations, so that, on this external surface, there are zones of large diameter 43 a and small diameter areas 43 b . The rod 43 is fixed to the end of the tab 45 by crimping its head 44. This embodiment shows that it is possible to replace a flat tongue of the type of that of FIGS. 1 to 5 with a contact element of cylindrical shape from when the contact element has, facing the core 18 of the coaxial cable, a succession of protrusions and hollows, the hollows allowing the creep of the plastic rod 19 and the electrical contacting of the core 18 with the contact element.

La rondelle de soutien 55 est fixée sur la bague 5 au moyen de pattes 55a.In Figures 7 and 8, there is shown another alternative embodiment of the device according to the invention. In this variant, only the embodiment of the antenna terminal is different from that which has been described for the variant of FIGS. 1 to 4; all the other elements of the connector and of the coaxial cable are identical and have been designated by the same reference numbers as for FIGS. 1 to 4. FIG. 7 represents only the coaxial cable and the connector, apart from the connection with the antenna and bodywork of the vehicle ; Figure 7 is similar to Figure 2 in that the elements are shown before crimping. The antenna terminal is here designated by 51 as a whole. It is here assumed to be made of a very thin sheet; it comprises a tab 52 substantially perpendicular to its mean plane and the end of the tab 52 forms a contact element disposed at right angles to the tab 52. The contact element is designated by 53 as a whole; it is formed of a tube obtained by folding or rolling a previously stamped sheet metal zone to reveal indentations 54 which, inside the tube, correspond to protuberances projecting towards the axis of the tube. The free end of the contact element 53 has the shape of a bevel 53 a . The bevel 53 a facilitates the introduction of the tube 53 inside the internal sheath 17; during this introduction, the core 18 and the plastic rod 19 are housed inside the tube 53. The antenna terminal 51 being made of fairly thin sheet metal, it is covered, at the base of the plastic ring 5, by a support washer 55 making it possible to avoid its deterioration when the bolt is tightened, which fixes the connector to the right of the antenna. The support washer 55 is fixed to the ring 5 by means of lugs 55 a .

When the wings 10 are crimped, in this variant embodiment, the tube 53 is crushed, so that the internal protuberances of the tube come into contact with the core 18 of the cable, the rod plastic 19 not obstructing this contact since it can flow in the hollows which separate two adjacent protuberances. The other characteristics and the other advantages of this variant are the same as those which have been described for the variant of FIGS. 1 to 4.

In Figure 9, there is shown a partial view of a connection device according to another alternative embodiment of the invention; this partial view is centered on the crimping wings 9 and 10 and does not reproduce the entire connector, the structure of which is strictly identical to that of the connector in FIGS. 1 to 4. The only difference between this embodiment and that of FIGS. 1 to 4 stems from the fact that in this embodiment, the protuberances are formed on the internal sheath 17 and not on the tongue which serves as a contact element and which is connected to the antenna terminal proper. Given the identity of the elements present, the same reference numbers have been used for this embodiment as for the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 4, except for the tab, which serves as a contact element and which has has been designated by 63 as a whole. The tongue 63 is a flat tongue which, seen in plan along the axis of the connector, has a substantially rectangular shape, its width being very slightly less than the diameter of the internal sheath 17. As for the variant of FIGS. 1 to 4, the inner sheath 17 has a stripped length protruding beyond the end of the outer sheath; the cable 15 is put into place in the sleeve formed by the pre-rolled wings 9, the braid 20 being interposed between the outer sheath 16 and the wings 9. In this positioning, the tongue 63 comes inside the internal sheath 17, the relative positions of the core 18, the rod 19 and the tongue 63 being random. To achieve the crimping of the wings 10, two punches are used comprising bosses; in this way, when the crimping pressure is exerted, the bosses of the punches create in the wings 10 indentations 90, which generate protrusions 91 on the internal sheath 17. The core 18 and the rod 19 are pinched during crimping between the protrusions 91 and the tongue 63 and the rod 19 flowing in the hollows between the protrusions 91. The conditions which existed for the realization of FIGS. 1 to 4 have therefore been reformed, conditions which have been shown to allow reliably obtain electrical contact between the core 18, on the one hand, and the contact element 63 of the terminal antenna 11, on the other hand. In this variant, it is also possible to use, for crimping the wings 9, two punches comprising bosses so as to form protrusions in the wings 9, which improve the electrical contact between the ground terminal 6 and the ground braid 20.

In Figures 10 and 11, there is shown a last embodiment of the connection device according to the invention. FIG. 10 is a partial view of the connection device, entirely similar to FIG. 9, that is to say that the zone included in the crimping wings 9 and 10 and the part are shown. adjacent to the connector, the rest of the device being strictly identical to that which has been described for the variant of FIGS. 1 to 4.

In this embodiment, the inner sheath 17 does not have a stripped length protruding beyond the end of the outer sheath. In other words, from a cable 15 prepared as indicated for the variant of FIGS. 1 to 4, the braid 20 is folded over the outside of the external sheath 16 and then the internal sheath 17 is cut so to leave only a very short protruding length relative to the section of the outer sheath. One then introduces into the free end of the internal sheath one of the ends of a sleeve designated by 70 as a whole. The sleeve 70 has two cylindrical parts 70 a , 70 b . The part 70 a , of smaller diameter, is that which is engaged inside the internal sheath 17; the part 70 b , of larger diameter, protrudes relative to the end of the cable 15 when the part 70 a is fully engaged in the internal sheath 17. The part 70 a has internally bosses 71, which project in the direction the axis of said part 70 a . The portion 70 b is surrounded by an insulating sheath section 73 forming an insulating sleeve. The cable thus equipped with its sleeve is threaded inside the wings 9 which, as in the variant of FIGS. 1 to 4, have been preformed to form a cylindrical sheath. In this implementation, the portion 70 b of the sleeve 70 comes to be put on the connecting lug 72 of the antenna terminal 11. The tab 72 may be connecting a similar tongue to the tongue 13 or the like to tongue 63. When the wings 9 and 10 are then crimped, the part 70 a of the sleeve 70 is crushed in line with the wings 9 and the bosses 71 come into contact with the core 18 of the coaxial cable 15. The crimping of the wings 10 ensures contact between the part 70 b and the tab 72 of the antenna terminal 11. It is therefore also ensured, by the double crimping of the wings 9 and 10 of the ground terminal 6, the electrical connection between the core 18 of the coaxial cable and the antenna terminal 11 of the connector. The particularity of this embodiment is that the coaxial cable can be pre-equipped with its sleeve 70 before being brought into the crimp position on the connector.

In a variant of this embodiment, the portion 70 b of the sleeve 70 is plugged on the leg link 72 with a slight interference; there is no longer any need to carry out the second crimping on the wings 10; the wings 10 are left in the state shown in FIG. 10 and simply form an anti-interference tunnel around the part 70 b . In this case, the presence of the insulating sheath section 73 is no longer necessary. The end of the cable 15 can be fitted with its sleeve 70 and then brought for plugging in on the tab 72, the assembly ending with crimping on the wings 9.

It should be noted that the embodiment corresponding to FIGS. 10 and 11 is very particularly usable for cables whose support element of the core is a foam filling, because in this case, the sleeve repels or perforates the foam inside the internal sheath at the time of its introduction and therefore strips the core 18 of the cable 15 by separating it from its foam support at the level of the protrusions 71. However, the variant shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, in which the contact element has a tubular shape, can also be used for coaxial cables, including the support element of the core is a foam filling.

In an exemplary embodiment, the internal diameter of the sheath 17 is substantially equal to 2.3 mm; the width of the tongue such as 13, or of the rod such as 43, is of the order of 2.25 mm to 2.3 mm; the apparent thickness of the tongue or rod, corresponding to the distance between the vertices of opposite corrugations, is substantially equal to 1.1 mm; the length is of the order of 8.8 mm.

It is understood that the embodiments described above are in no way limiting and may give rise to any desirable modifications, without departing from the scope of the invention.
