Definitions
- the present invention relates to carbonate-containing mineral fillers, pigments and similar materials.
- Pigments are practically insoluble, inorganic or organic, colored or non-colored colorants in the application medium. Many inorganic pigments also act as fillers and vice versa. The pigments are used in particular for dyeing lacquers and paints, for coloring plastics, paper, textiles, cement, concrete, ceramics, glass and enamel, cosmetics, food, as well as for printing inks in the graphics industry and as artists' paints.
- DE-PS 27 33 722 relates to a process for the continuous production of Calcium sulfoaluminate pigment with a particle size of 0.1 to 2.0 ⁇ m by reacting calcium hydroxide with aluminum sulfate for paper coating. This process produces a high gloss in printing papers, inter alia, even under moderate calender conditions due to the high degree of hydration of satia white, paper with high opacity being obtained by bulging out a thick coating layer.
- DE-PS 1 938 .162 relates to a method for coating paper or the like, wherein a
- Coating material of a polymeric composition contained in a liquid medium is applied to a web. This method is intended to enable the direct production of a light coating of high smoothness and opacity without the need for subsequent smoothing work.
- DE-AS 20 26 963 relates to a method for producing a paper based on natural and / or synthetic fibers or a film made of synthetic material, in particular a reproduction paper.
- a white pigment a methylene urea precipitate which is weakly polymerized in a strongly acidic medium is incorporated into the fiber pulp or spread onto the surface. This is intended to improve the whiteness and the opacity of the paper.
- a disadvantageous phenomenon is that increasing the amount of filler reduces the glue content of the paper or requires more resin to achieve the same glue content, and furthermore that the tear length of the paper also decreases.
- the fillers are usually divided into silicates, sulfates, carbonates and oxides.
- kaolin which belongs to the group of silicates, is most widely used. The main cause of the spread of kaolin is to be found in its relatively inexpensive nature and in its approximately 60-70% retention. The retention value indicates how much of the filler mixed in the pulp remains in the finished product.
- chalk which belongs to the group of carbonates, despite its technologically advantageous properties, is limited by the retention of around 50-55% compared to kaolin.
- the chalk used as a filler is made from the remains of the support structures of microorganisms, so-called nannofossils, which are frequently found in nature and have mainly microscopic delicacy.
- Precipitation or precipitation of calcium carbonate results from precipitation from calcium chloride solution with soda or from calcium hydroxide solution with carbon dioxide.
- the natural or precipitated calcium carbonate has the further technological disadvantage of the property that it is very sensitive to the aluminum phosphate sulfate used to precipitate the glues.
- DE-PS 27 37 742 is based on the task of using the by-products in the paper industry as a filler.
- the solution to this problem consists in the use of calcium carbonate obtained in the caustification of sulfate waste liquor in cellulose manufacture as a filler for paper production, the calcium carbonate being a maximum of 75% aqueous suspension in the form of the resulting lime sludge and after adjustment of its pH between 5 and 12 an acid or an acid mixture is used.
- Retention agents are also called flocculants.
- fillers are present together with the fiber and auxiliary materials suspended in water. They come into contact with rotating and stationary parts or get between the relatively moving surfaces of machine elements, e.g. Suction pad and paper machine sieve. In these cases, they cause surface damage to the machine parts. Suspended pigments as components of coating colors behave in the same way.
- Dispersibility is one of the most important properties of finely divided fillers, pigments and similar materials.
- Plastics such as PVC, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyethylene, as well as in lacquer resin binders, plasticizers, papers etc.
- the finest possible distribution of the filler or pigment in another material should be achieved, e.g. in the above-mentioned plastics, lacquers, papers etc.
- the processes suitable for dispersing are grinding processes or devices based on the ultrasound principle. Generally, dispersants are also used.
- Dispersing agents are organic or inorganic, monomeric or polymeric substances which facilitate the dispersing of particles in a dispersing agent by lowering the interfacial tension between the two components, ie bringing about wetting.
- Dispersants are substances with the property of preventing agglomeration or agglomeration of the particles of pigments, fillers, resins and bringing them into a fine distribution, or of counteracting in advance a tendency to agglomerate or even precipitate. They have surface-active properties and are used in the preparation (grinding) of fillers and pigment pigments for coating slips; for better distribution of resin-free cellulose.
- Sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, alkylphenol polyglycol ether, alkyl aryl sulfonic acid salts are to be mentioned. Their use is to be restricted to the lowest concentrations.
- From DE-OS 24 56 463 is a method for preparation of finely divided calcium carbonate H dispersions by homogenization of precipitated calcium carbonate in the presence of a dispersant to a 15 - 25% water-containing suspension and subsequent wet grinding of the suspension is known in which in order to produce well dispersible calcium carbonate of high fineness and density, the dispersion is converted into a free-flowing product by drying.
- DE-PS 29 08 699 describes a process for the production of powder pigments with improved dispersing properties, in which the pigments are passed into a dryer in a manner known per se, the surface-active agents directly into the loading zone of this dryer, which is separated from the actual drying zone , introduces and gives onto the aqueous pigment dough, whereupon the coated pigment is dried in the drying zone of the dryer.
- DE-AS 29 21 238 discloses a process for producing easily dispersible pigment preparations with a pigment content of more than 65% by weight, in which the pigment is slurried in water and in which a salt of an organic acid is used. This process is characterized in that an octoate is used as the salt of the organic acid.
- Fine-particle calcium carbonates are generally produced today by wet grinding and dried for use in the paint and varnish industry and in the plastics industry and sometimes even for use in the paper industry. Agglomerates form during this drying process, which significantly reduce dispersibility. It is therefore obvious to switch to dry grinding, in which the disadvantage of agglomerate formation due to the drying process does not exist. Dry grinding of this type is also already known (e.g. from US Pat. No. 3,022,185).
- the measured particle distribution is shown on an XY plotter as a continuity sum curve (see, for example, Belger, P., Swiss Association of Paint and Paint Chemists, XVII FATIPEC Congress, Lugano, September 23-28, 1984), where the particle diameter of a corresponding spherical diameter is plotted on the X axis and the proportion of particles in% by weight is plotted on the Y axis.
- the upper section is the diameter of the coarsest particles in ⁇ m of the products according to the invention or of the comparison products, in each case read off from the grain distribution curve obtained as described above.
- the average particle diameter of the products according to the invention or of the comparison products is the particle diameter in pm, read off on the X axis at a value on the Y axis of 50% by weight of the particles.
- the products to be tested are commercially available in a pigment-binder mixture based on a long-oil alkyd resin with a 75% oil content, consisting of vegetable fatty acids, e.g. PLUSOL DL 75 from Plüss-Staufer AG, CH-4665 Oftringen, Switzerland is available and a titanium dioxide with a Ti0 2 content of 94%, for example KRONOS RN 59 from KRONOS TITAN GmbH, Leverkusen, Federal Republic of Germany, which is commercially available, tested for dispersibility.

Auch bei Kautschuk und synthetischen Elastomeren kann man durch geeignete Zusätze (hier oft Verstärker genannt) die Qualität verbessern, so z.B. die Härte, Festigkeit, Elastizität und Dehnung.relatively cheap fabrics, e.g. Materials, adhesives and paints, paper, plastics and the like are added to increase their volume and / or weight, but also often to improve their technical usability. The quality of rubber and synthetic elastomers can also be improved by suitable additives (often called reinforcers), e.g. the hardness, strength, elasticity and elongation.
Pigments are practically insoluble, inorganic or organic, colored or non-colored colorants in the application medium.
Die DE-PS 1 938 .162 betrifft ein Verfahren zum Befchichten von Papier oder dergleichen, wobei einIn the paper, paint and lacquer industry in particular, products are required that have a high gloss and high opacity. DE-PS 27 33 722 relates to a process for the continuous production of

- Fillers are understood to mean materials that are used in the paper stock.
Ein weiterer Vorteil der Verwendung von Füllstoffen in der Papierproduktion besteht unterIt has long been known in paper production that the expensive and relatively difficult to obtain fiber materials are replaced by fillers of mineral origin. The filler content of the different types of paper is between 10 and 30%. Another advantage of using fillers in paper production is under
Eine nachteilige Erscheinung besteht hingegen darin, daß durch Erhöhung der Füllstoffmenge der Leimgehalt des Papiers zurückgeht bzw. zum Erreichen des gleichen Leimgehalts mehr Harz erforderlich wird, weiterhin, daß auch die Zerreißlänge des Papiers abnimmt. in that the finely divided fillers fill the spaces between the individual fibers and thereby make the paper surface more flat and smooth and reduce the transparency of the paper, which is a fundamental requirement for the types of printing and writing paper. A disadvantageous phenomenon, however, is that increasing the amount of filler reduces the glue content of the paper or requires more resin to achieve the same glue content, and furthermore that the tear length of the paper also decreases.
Due to their chemical composition, the fillers are usually divided into silicates, sulfates, carbonates and oxides. In the paper industry, kaolin, which belongs to the group of silicates, is most widely used. The main cause of the spread of kaolin is to be found in its relatively inexpensive nature and in its approximately 60-70% retention. The retention value indicates how much of the filler mixed in the pulp remains in the finished product.
The use of chalk, which belongs to the group of carbonates, despite its technologically advantageous properties, is limited by the retention of around 50-55% compared to kaolin. The chalk used as a filler is made from the remains of the support structures of microorganisms, so-called nannofossils, which are frequently found in nature and have mainly microscopic delicacy. Precipitation or precipitation of calcium carbonate results from precipitation from calcium chloride solution with soda or from calcium hydroxide solution with carbon dioxide.
Apart from its rather poor retention, the natural or precipitated calcium carbonate has the further technological disadvantage of the property that it is very sensitive to the aluminum phosphate sulfate used to precipitate the glues.
The solution to this problem consists in the use of calcium carbonate obtained in the caustification of sulfate waste liquor in cellulose manufacture as a filler for paper production, the calcium carbonate being a maximum of 75% aqueous suspension in the form of the resulting lime sludge and after adjustment of its pH between 5 and 12 an acid or an acid mixture is used.
AS 1 546 240.Further documents relating to retention are DE-PS 25 51 259 and DE-AS 1 546 240.
Retention agents are also called flocculants. The pulp and fillers are mixed together in the pulp in the Dutch or Bütte. It is the goal to bring both substances as homogeneous mass onto the screen of the paper machine as far as possible without any losses due to sinking in the fleet or flooding in the specified proportions. Fillers and fibrous materials behave quite differently in dispersibility, so that fillers can still occur in the waste water. A measure of this behavior is the "total retention", the ratio in percent of the amount of filler in the finished paper to the amount of filler (atro) that was added in total (including that contained in the backwater = white water) fillers). The highest possible retention (return analysis ability) is aimed for, although the physically complicated colloidal structure of the fiber / filler / water system has a large number of factors, but not all of them can be varied from the practical circumstances.
Another important property in connection with the use of fillers, pigments and similar materials in paints and varnishes, papers and plastics is the abrasiveness.
Begriff "Korrosion").According to DIN 50320, the term "wear" is understood to mean an "undesirable change in the surface of everyday objects due to the separation of small particles due to mechanical causes". In German, the word "Abrasion" borrowed from Anglo-Saxon is almost equivalent to the term wear. In deviation from DIN 50320, the effect of mechanical, chemical and thermal components is sometimes summarized in the specialist literature under wear (cf. term "corrosion").
In the paper industry, fillers are present together with the fiber and auxiliary materials suspended in water. They come into contact with rotating and stationary parts or get between the relatively moving surfaces of machine elements, e.g. Suction pad and paper machine sieve. In these cases, they cause surface damage to the machine parts. Suspended pigments as components of coating colors behave in the same way.
Zur Ermittlung zahlenmäßiger Angaben über die Verschleißwirkung von Füllstoffen in wäßriger Suspension wurden Laborprüfverfahren entwickelt, z.B.Laboratory test methods have been developed to determine numerical information about the wear effect of fillers in aqueous suspension, e.g.
mittels des Einlehner Abrasionstester AT 1000.using the Einlehner abrasion tester AT 10 0 0.
In the North American and Scandinavian regions, the Valley Tester with device-specific test regulations is used for the same purpose.
Oktober 1975).Since the individual phenomena that determine wear are process and device dependent, the measurement method used must also be specified with the measurement results (A. Breunig and WF Hill, Verein Zellcheming, Berliner Allee 56, D-6100 Darmstadt, leaflet V / 27.5 / 75, issued) on October 23, 1975).
Another important requirement is the best possible adhesion between particles and coating agent in order to obtain better mechanical properties of the end product (David L. Skinner and Edward L. Moon, 27th Annual Technical Conference, 1972, Section 15-F, pages 1 to 4) .
As is known, particularly finely divided mineral fillers are now manufactured according to the state of the art by wet grinding and subsequent drying. The products obtained are used in particular in the paint and varnish, plastics and paper industries. Typically, organic dispersants such as e.g. Polyacrylates added. Products produced in this way contain a large number of agglomerates after drying and are characterized by poor dispersibility.
One of the most important properties of finely divided fillers, pigments and similar materials is their dispersibility, e.g. in Plastics such as PVC, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyethylene, as well as in lacquer resin binders, plasticizers, papers etc. The finest possible distribution of the filler or pigment in another material should be achieved, e.g. in the above-mentioned plastics, lacquers, papers etc. The processes suitable for dispersing are grinding processes or devices based on the ultrasound principle. Generally, dispersants are also used. Dispersing agents are organic or inorganic, monomeric or polymeric substances which facilitate the dispersing of particles in a dispersing agent by lowering the interfacial tension between the two components, ie bringing about wetting.
Dispersants are substances with the property of preventing agglomeration or agglomeration of the particles of pigments, fillers, resins and bringing them into a fine distribution, or of counteracting in advance a tendency to agglomerate or even precipitate. They have surface-active properties and are used in the preparation (grinding) of fillers and pigment pigments for coating slips; for better distribution of resin-free cellulose. Sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, alkylphenol polyglycol ether, alkyl aryl sulfonic acid salts are to be mentioned. Their use is to be restricted to the lowest concentrations.
Easily dispersible inorganic pigments are already known from DE-AS 20 01 381, the surfaces of which carry non-drying, fatty acid-modified alkyd resins based on polycarboxylic acids, polyols and fatty acids with more than 6 carbon atoms.
From DE-OS 24 56 463 is a method for preparation of finely divided calcium carbonate H dispersions by homogenization of precipitated calcium carbonate in the presence of a dispersant to a 15 - 25% water-containing suspension and subsequent wet grinding of the suspension is known in which in order to produce well dispersible calcium carbonate of high fineness and density, the dispersion is converted into a free-flowing product by drying.
Die DE-PS 29 08 699 beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Pulverpigmenten mit verbesserten Dispergiereigenschaften, bei welchem man die Pigmente in an sich bekannter Weise in einen Trockner führt, die oberflächenaktiven Mittel direkt in die Beschickungszone dieses Trockners, die von der eigentlichen Trocknungszone abgetrennt ist, einbringt und auf den wässrigen Pigmentteig gibt, worauf das gecoatete Pigment in der Trocknungszone des Trockners getrocknet wird.DE-PS 29 08 699 describes a process for the production of powder pigments with improved dispersing properties, in which the pigments are passed into a dryer in a manner known per se, the surface-active agents directly into the loading zone of this dryer, which is separated from the actual drying zone , introduces and gives onto the aqueous pigment dough, whereupon the coated pigment is dried in the drying zone of the dryer.
AS 29 21 238 discloses a process for producing easily dispersible pigment preparations with a pigment content of more than 65% by weight, in which the pigment is slurried in water and in which a salt of an organic acid is used. This process is characterized in that an octoate is used as the salt of the organic acid.
Finally, from DE-PS 23 46 269 a process for the production of highly concentrated fine-particle calcium carbonate dispersions is known, in which the 150th by reacting an aqueous calcium salt solution with a CaO content of 7 to 14% by weight with an aqueous alkali carbonate solution Contains 250 g / l of CO 2 as carbonate and 5 to 10 g / 1 CO 2 as bicarbonate, the calcium carbonate obtained is first homogenized to form a suspension containing 15 to 25% by weight of water and, after further dilution to a maximum of 40% by weight of water, wet grinding is subjected. This process is intended to produce highly concentrated, finely divided calcium carbonate dispersions with CaC0 3 grain sizes of less than 5 .mu.m, which contain up to 80% by weight of calcium carbonate.
Derartige Trockenvermahlungen sind auch bereits bekannt (z.B. aus der US-PS 3 022 185).Fine-particle calcium carbonates are generally produced today by wet grinding and dried for use in the paint and varnish industry and in the plastics industry and sometimes even for use in the paper industry. Agglomerates form during this drying process, which significantly reduce dispersibility. It is therefore obvious to switch to dry grinding, in which the disadvantage of agglomerate formation due to the drying process does not exist. Dry grinding of this type is also already known (e.g. from US Pat. No. 3,022,185).
As expected, these processes actually lead to products which have better dispersibility than those products which were produced by wet grinding and subsequent drying. However, it must be taken into account that, in the known dry grinding in comparison to the known wet grinding, products with a coarser grain distribution are always obtained which, because of the larger particles, also automatically have poorer dispersibility, so that overall the dispersibility of the products which are produced by the dry process are only marginally better than the dispersibility of the particles with the wet grinding and the closing drying.

The viscosity measurement shows that, in comparison to the prior art (product A), the product B according to the invention practically doubles the viscosity in Pa.s at low shear rate. The PVC and all stabilizers and lubricants were filled in a Papenmeier high-speed mixer with a capacity of 14 liters. The filling quantity was 7 kg. From the cold state, the mixture was heated to 100 ° C. at 1800 rpm by frictional heat and heat, which was supplied via the double jacket, and held at 100-105 ° C. for 5 minutes. The speed of the mixer was then reduced to 600 rpm and the mixture was cooled to 50 ° C. (let cold water circulate in a double jacket). The filler was added at 450 rpm and homogenized for 1 minute. The mixer was then emptied.
Vom Dry Blend wurden 300 g abgewogen und auf dem Zweiwalzenwerk mit 150 mm 0 und 400 mm Länge bei 185°C während 5 Minuten unter dauerndem Wenden geliert.300 g of the dry blend were weighed out and gelled on the two-roll mill with 150 mm 0 and 400 mm length at 185 ° C. for 5 minutes with constant turning.
After these 5 minutes, the skin (2-4 mm thick) is removed from the roller and pressed to the desired thickness in a frame. To do this, the material is pre-pressed at 190 ° C for 2 minutes at 10 kN and then loaded for 3 minutes at 200 kN. The plate is then placed under a second press cooled at 20 ° C. with water, at a pressure of 10 kN.

In spite of the larger average particle diameter compared to the prior art (product A), product B according to the invention gives a higher hiding power with the same degree of whiteness.
Die Erfindung weist insbesondere folgende Vorteile auf:The invention has the following advantages in particular:
B. in Hart-PVC erreicht.
- - In the case of paints and varnishes, in particular, the opacity and gloss.
- - In the paper industry for the paper pulp a higher opacity, better retention values (since the products according to the invention were produced without the addition of a dispersant) and a lower abrasiveness.
- - A better gloss, higher opacity and better printability in the paper line.
- - In the plastics industry, better rheology in plastisols and sealants and an increase in mechanical properties, e.g. B. in hard PVC.
In addition, the products according to the invention represent a cheaper starting material for the subsequent surface treatment (liability).
From the "dispersants" and "retention aids (flocculants)" defined in more detail above, it follows that the dispersibility of the fillers in the paper pulp is also an important criterion with regard to retention. This also shows that retention aids are added in order to achieve a good bond between the filler or the pigment or similar materials with the fiber.
On the other hand, it follows that dispersants are required to prevent the agglomeration of filler particles. However, the dispersants mentioned are exactly the opposite of the retention agents, which explains why the in the presence of dis-. fillers produced by wet grinding give unsatisfactory retention values. The essential advantage of the fillers or pigments or similar materials according to the invention is therefore also that they can be produced without dispersants and are nevertheless distinguished by excellent dispersibility.
After all, it is extremely surprising that the products according to the invention improve all of the properties listed, since the requirements regarding fineness for gloss, opacity, abrasion and dispersibility contradict the requirements for retention and adhesion in part.
