Abstract

In order to be able to use, in the production of books, humidifying PUR melting adhesive systems for the binding of the body of the book and the cover (1), the adhesive is applied to the cover (1) in a width which exceeds the thickness of the back of the book on both sides by about 0.5 to 20 mm.

Description

The invention relates to an adhesive application process in book production when connecting the book block and cover (1) using a hot-melt adhesive to be applied to the cover, preferably with the glue (6) for the spine side gluing (7) onto the cover (1 ) is applied.

In the present context, the term “book production” is understood in addition to the production of books in the actual sense also to the production of other graphic products, such as magazines and catalogs. The terms "book block", "book spine" and the like used in the following have a corresponding general meaning.

For the adhesive connection of graphic products on tabletop devices as well as semi or fully automatic perfect binding machines, the adhesive is applied directly to the spine by means of roller application systems. Open glue pools are used for this. Attempts have also already been made to apply the adhesive application directly to the back of the book with nozzles adapted to the shape of the book spine. However, this procedure failed because the edge sheets at the cut edge could not be covered securely or completely with adhesive. Faults frequently occur, in particular in the case of high-volume papers in which the degree of deformation is particularly pronounced due to the pressure of the required holding pliers.

In practice, dispersion adhesives, glutin glues and hot melt adhesives are used for gluing. The range of use of these adhesive groups is, however, limited, since depending on the type of adhesive, papers which are difficult to bind are no longer bonded with a strength sufficient for use. Volatile portions of the printing ink or the printing ink or components of the surface coating that may have been applied to the contents sheets can migrate from the envelope into the adhesive and reduce its strength. In addition, there is limited flexibility at low temperatures of below - 20 ° C and a decrease in strength at high temperatures of over 80 ° C. The difficulties with the systems mentioned, which work with a single or multi-layer application, can be largely remedied by using one- or two-component PUR melts. However, while two-component systems with the aforementioned roller application systems are still easy to process and master, this no longer applies to the PUR hot-melt adhesive systems that crosslink in the presence of moisture. An improvement can be achieved here by substantially smaller, largely encapsulated application systems, but the fundamental risk of undesired networking remains. For longer breaks, as they can occur when changing formats, changing machines or malfunctions of upstream machines, the application system must either be cleaned or the risk of crosslinking of the adhesive still in the application system must be accepted. Since fully cross-linked PUR hotmelt adhesives are not soluble or meltable, cleaning can only be done mechanically and correspondingly time-consuming.

From the area of package gluing, adhesive application systems are already known from DE-B-12 74 864 and from DE-A-19 22 056, which continuously or discontinuously, equipped with one or more nozzles, limit adhesive to width and length to one Substrate, such as the closure flap of a box, can apply. Dispersion adhesives as well as glues of animal origin and hot melt adhesives are suitable for these application systems.

An adhesive application method of the type mentioned is known from US-A-4 129 471. Hot melt adhesives based on polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate or polyamide are applied to envelopes. Such adhesives can be heat-activated several times. Therefore, in accordance with US-A-4 129 471, the hot melt adhesive is first applied to the envelope, and then activated again at some time later in suitable devices, i.e. made molten in order to then glue the envelope to the leaves.

However, moisture-curing polyurethane hot melt adhesives are completely different in nature. These cannot be reactivated heat several times, so that the connection to the sides to be glued must be made very quickly after the adhesive has been applied to an envelope. Moisture-crosslinking polyurethane hotmelt adhesives have so far been processed using processes in which the adhesive is transferred from a dip tank to a rotating roller and from there is passed on to book spines that are guided past it. However, the adhesive is only transferred to the spine of the book and very thin layers of adhesive cannot be realized. The known roller processes also have the disadvantage that they lead to foaming of the adhesive at high speeds and an adhesive skin forms on the surface of the adhesive level by crosslinking in the plunge pool from which the adhesive is transferred to the roller.

The invention has for its object to provide a method with which moisture-curing polyurethane hotmelt adhesives in book production for back gluing and side gluing of the connecting surface of the book block and cover can be processed without problems and above all are economical and trouble-free to apply.

With an adhesive application method of the type described at the outset, this task becomes Solved according to the invention in that a moisture-crosslinking polyurethane hot-melt adhesive is applied to the cover in a width exceeding the book spine thickness on both sides by 0.5 mm by means of a slot nozzle or a multi-hole nozzle, in particular in the contact process, in a thin layer thickness of 0.1 mm onwards .

This creates a process by means of which moisture-crosslinking polyurethane hotmelt adhesives can be applied to envelopes economically and without problems, even in relatively thin layers. Furthermore, the application of the adhesive to the cover ensures that the width of the application exceeds the book block thickness on both sides, in particular by 0.5-20 mm, in such a way that the margins are always completely covered by the adhesive with absolute reproducibility. The fact that nozzles are used to apply the adhesive enables the process according to the invention to achieve significantly higher processing speeds than the known roller processes.

In the case of very light papers, the PUR hotmelt adhesive can be applied in the entire width in the same thickness, since relatively thin layer thicknesses in the range from 1/10 to 2/10 mm are to be used, so that the slope resulting from the side gluing in the area of Spine little disturbs. The extent of the disturbance decreases with increasing thickness of the book block.

For thicker and high-volume papers, either slot nozzles or multi-hole nozzles are used as application heads, which allow a differentiation in the application thickness in the area of book spines and side gluing by means of stepped front surfaces in the slot nozzle and by smaller nozzle hole diameters in the area of side gluing in the multi-hole nozzle. In this sense, it is possible to obtain a thin side glue on the spine even with thicker adhesive application and to avoid the undesirable slope in the area of the book spine. The nozzles for the side gluing can also be carried out separately from the back gluing, in which case there is a choice in each case to apply the side gluing to the cover or to the book spine. Of course, this alternative also exists in the case of slot nozzles.

It is also expedient to apply water mist or water vapor at the adhesive application point. As a result, the moisture required for crosslinking is supplied even more effectively and quickly, in particular in the case of thicker adhesive layers, than through the intrinsic moisture of the paper or the moisture from the ambient air. It is advisable to apply the water mist or water vapor between the adhesive application and application to the envelope.

Another important advantage of the invention is that when the adhesive application system is shut down for a limited time, there is no noticeable change in the adhesive largely sealed in the nozzle against external influences. In the event of longer interruptions and end of work, the system can be completely closed by removing the nozzle and closing the feeder. The effort required to clean the nozzle head is low compared to the efforts previously used to clean an entire roller-mounted application system.

Details of the invention are explained on the basis of the schematic representation of exemplary embodiments.

9 wie in Fig. 2 vorgesehen werden.1 and 2, an envelope provided for gluing onto the spine of a book block is designated by 1 in total. The envelope 1 has an inner grooving pair 2, 3 and an outer grooving pair 4, 5. Between the inner grooving 2 and 3 the back gluing 6 is provided, while in the area between the grooving 2 and 4 or 3 and 5 a side gluing 7 is applied can. The back gluing 6 and the side gluing 7 can be provided flat as in FIG. 1 or as separate adhesive strips 8 and 9 as in FIG. 2.

In Fig. 1, a nozzle head 10 with a total of 11 designated slot nozzle for applying back gluing and side gluing 6 and 7 is provided. The slot nozzle 11 can work in the contact process or the adhesive from a nozzle not just touching the envelope paper, i.e. Apply to the respective surface 6 or 7 over a short distance. In the exemplary embodiment, a slot nozzle 11 is provided which has a gradation 12 on the edges provided for the side gluing, such that the central part 13 of the slot nozzle 11 provides a thicker adhesive coating than the edge parts in the area of the gradation 12. Basically, however, a slot nozzle 11 can be provided with the same slot thickness everywhere. This should then be so wide that the width of the spine to be glued is exceeded by the back gluing 6 on both sides by at least 0.5 mm, in particular up to 2 mm. This ensures - even in the absence of side gluing - perfect gluing of the margins as well.

The exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 2 shows a nozzle head 14 with a multi-hole nozzle, designated overall by 15. Amounts of 0.5 to 5 mm can be provided as hole spacing of the multi-hole nozzle 15 both in the area of the back gluing and the side gluing 7. In this case as well - even if there is no actual side gluing - a back gluing 6 is applied, which is about 0.5 to 2 mm wider than the book spine to be glued in order to reliably grasp the respective margins.

When designing the multi-hole nozzle 15 of the nozzle head 14 according to FIG. 2, both for back gluing 6 and for side gluing 7, it may be advantageous to choose the nozzle hole diameter in the area of the side gluing 7 to be smaller than the desired difference in adhesive thickness than in the area of the back gluing 6 . In the exemplary embodiment, the adhesive strips 9 in the area of the side gluing 7 are significantly narrower than the adhesive strips 8 in the area of the back gluing 6.

14 bewegt. In the exemplary embodiments according to FIGS. 1 and 2, either the nozzle head 10 or 14 is moved in the arrow direction 16 relative to the envelope 1 or the envelope 1 in the arrow direction 16 relative to the nozzle head 10 or 14 during operation.

If the side gluing is not to be applied to the cover but directly to the book block 18, customary slot nozzles or perforated nozzles (19, 20) should be used for this. Roller application systems are also not recommended in this case if moisture-curing PUR adhesive systems are used.
