- This invention relates to rotary power tools and is concerned with safety devices therefor.
- a power tool having a housing and comprising drive means including a spindle which is driven in rotation and one end of which protrudes from the housing and is formed with a screw thread for attachment of a tool element to the spindle, a spring-loaded plunger depressible from outside the housing against the force of the spring to engage, when the drive means is stationary, a recess or one of a plurality of recesses formed in a first rotating part of the drive means thereby to lock the spindle against rotation, characterised in that barrier means is provided between the plunger and said rotating part which barrier means is mounted for limited lost motion relative to said rotating part about the axis of rotation of said rotating part into first and second positions respectively obstructing and permitting engagement of the plunger with said recess or recesses, and in that a device is provided for causing the barrier means to take up said first position such that the plunger cannot be engaged with said recess or any of them while the spindle is rotating in its drive direction.
- said barrier means provides a number of abutments which number is equal to the number of said recesses, each of which abutments being engageable by a side face of the plunger to move the barrier means into said second position when the spindle is rotated in a reverse direction whereby the plunger can then be engaged in said recess or one of them.

- a motor (not shown) having an output shaft 13 on the free end of which is secured a bevel pinion 14.
- the bevel pinion 14 meshes with a bevel gear 15 which is fixed to a spindle 16 mounted in bearings 18 in the housing.
- One end of the spindle 16 projects from the housing 11 and is formed with a screw-threaded portion 19 for engagement by a retaining nut 20 whi-ch serves to secure the grinding disc 12 on the spindle 16. Rotation of the motor thus drives the grinding disc 12, which rotates in the direction of arrow 17.
- Bevel gear 15 is formed with two axial, diametrically oppositely disposed recesses in the form of through bores 21.
- a locking plunger 23 is mounted in a bore 26 in the housing 11 which bore 26 has a lengthwise axis aligned with the pitch circle of bores 21.
- the plunger 23 is loaded by a spring 24 into a position away from the bevel gear 15. The plunger can however be manually depressed against the force of the spring 24 to project into one or other of the bores 21.
- An annular barrier plate 27 having a central hub 25 is disposed about the spindle 16 in a position axially between the plunger 23 and the bevel gear 15.
- a set of disc springs 36 backed by a circlip 35 engaged in a groove in the spindle urge the plate into engagement with the bevel gear 15.
- a pin 34 projects axially from the bevel gear 15 and engages in a slot 33 formed as an extension of a central hole 28 in the hub of the barrier plate 27, the circumferential extent of slot 33 allowing a predetermined degree of rotational lost motion between the barrier plate 27 and the bevel gear 15/spindle 16 assembly.
- the barrier plate 27 is formed with two diametrically oppositely disposed slots 29 for cooperation with the through bores 21 of the bevel gear 15 as shown in Figure 3B.
- the material at the leading edge 31 of each of the slots is inclined axially towards the plunger 23.
- plunger 23 If during use of the tool, plunger 23 is accidentally depressed while bevel gear 15 is spinning, the plunger strikes the inclined edge portion of one or other of the slots 29 of the barrier plate 27. This engagement causes the barrier plate to rotate relative to the bevel gear 15 to take up the lost motion and to move the barrier plate into apposition in which it blanks off the bores 21 in the bevel gear as shown in Figure 3A. The plunger then rides over the upturned edge portions and continues to do so, the up-turned edge portions 31 acting as cams, until either the plunger is released by the operator or the tool stops. The plunger 23 cannot therefore be depressed into engagement with either of the through-bores 21, during operation of the grinder.
- the plunger When the grinder is stationary and it is desired to remove the disc 12, the plunger is depressed and the grinding disc 12 is rotated by hand in the opposite direction to arrow 17 so that the edge face of one of the upturned edge portions 31 comes into abutment with the depressed plunger 23. Further reverse rotation of the disc causes the plunger to rotate the barrier plate 27 to take up the lost motion thereof relative to bevel gear 15 to move the slots 29 into register with the through bores 21 as shown in Figure 3B. The plunger can then be depressed into the aligned bore 21 to lock the spindle against rotation. The retaining nut 20 can then be unscrewed in the conventional manner in order to remove the grinding disc 12.
- the spindle 16 is formed with two oppositely disposed radial recesses 50 and a spring-loaded plunger 52 is arranged so as to be capable of being depressed radially into one or other of said recesses.
- the barrier member is in the form of a cylindrical sleeve 53 which coaxially surrounds a length of the spindle 16.
- One end of the sleeve 53 is formed with a circumferentially extending slot 58 into which a pin 59 fixed to the spindle projects in order to render the sleeve capable of a predetermined degree of rotational lost motion with respect to the spindle.
- the other end of the sleeve 53 is formed with two oppositely disposed slots 55 the material at the leading edge 54 of each of_ which is inclined radially outward.
- the lost motion allows the sleeve to rotate relative to the spindle into first and second positions in which the sleeve respectively obstructs and permits engagement of the plunger in recesses 50.
