Definitions
- the present invention concerns a method for cutting-off an elongate piece of concrete, whereby the blade of the cutting tool is pressed against a piece of concrete supported against a counterpiece.
- the invention also concerns a cutting> tool used for cutting-off elongate pieces of concrete.
- Production platforms used for gas and oil drilling at sea are, as a rule, built on reinforced concrete piles. Abandoned production platforms cause problems to the environment and risks to navigation. Earlier, these structures were left there as such, or only the derricks were disassembled to a depth determined by navigational requirements.
- the piles are made up of steel cylinders filled with concrete and located one inside the other.
- Each of the platforms comprises about 30 to 40 piles.
- the costs of the demolition have been estimated at 1 to 4 million U.S. dollars per platform in respect of platforms constructed in water depths ranging from 0 to 40 meters. In difficult conditions, the costs have amounted even to 8 million U.S. dollars per platform (calculated as per the cost level in 1983). It is estimated that there are about 6500 platforms of this kind in the world at present, at depths from just a few meters up to 150, even 300 meters.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an economical and safe method of demolishing these platforms.
- the method in accordance with the invention is characterized in that a cutting force is directed at the piece of concrete by means of the blade edge of the cutting tool, which said blade edge has a larger blade angle, and, moreover, a bending force is directed at the piece of concrete by means of a wedge effect of a smaller inclination angle, produced by the main part of the side of the blade of the cutting tool.
- the cutting tool in accordance with the invention is characterized in that, in a cross-section of the tool -blade, the blade angle at the edge of the blade is wider than the angle between the main part of one side of the blade and the opposite side.
- piles of reinforced concrete can be cut off easily and quickly.
- the work normally carried out by divers can now be performed by robots.
- the piles are supported against each other by means of transverse steel supports 6.
- Figure 2 shows a cross-section of a pile 5 of reinforced concrete.
- the pile consists of several steel cylinders 7 fitted one inside the other and filled with concrete 8.
- the cylinders are eccentric in relation to each other, which means that the distances between the steel faces vary.
- the concrete may have cavities 9.
- each pile is cut-off to pieces of suitable length by means of the method of the invention, as is shown in Figures 3 and 4.
- a cutting tool 10 in accordance with the invention suspended on a wire 11, is lowered from the vessel used for working around the pile 5.
- a lifting wire 12 is tied around the top of the pile, the other end of the wire being fixed to the winch on the transportation barge.
- the upper end of the pile is cut off and lifted into the transportation barge.
- the cutting tool is lowered down to the next cutting point, and the same procedure is repeated. Earth has been removed from the bottom of the sea around the pile, which makes it possible to have the last cutting point 13 as deep down as possible.
- Figures 5 and 6 show two alternative structures of the cutting tool.
- the tool comprises a frame 14 and a cutting blade 16, which can be made to slide by means of two hydraulic cylinders 15 along the sides of the frame.
- a counterpiece 17 is supported against the frame at the opposite side of the cutting blade.
- the side 18 of the frame that is provided with the counterpiece is, by one of its ends, attached to the rest of the frame pivotably by means of an articulated joint 19, and the other end is provided with a locking device 20.
- the movement of the pivotable side 18 is produced by means of a hydraulic cylinder 21.
- the tool can be fitted around the pile to be cut-off from the side, whereas the device shown in Fig. 5 is lowered to the cutting point from the top end of the pile.
- the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 permits the use of underwater robots and remote-controlled vessels.
- FIGS 7 to 9 are more detailed illustrations of the form of the blade 16. Seen from above, the edge 24 of the blade 16 is V-shaped, so that the angle e between the portions of the edge 24 is, viewed from above, larger than 180 and smaller than 270°, preferably about 190 to 220°.
- the main part 28 of the upper face of the blade consists of two inclined planes placed side by side, the angles of inclination b of the said planes being equal.
- the angle b is smaller than 45°, preferably about 30 to 40°.
- the straight lines along which both of the planes intersect the horizontal-level form the above-mentioned angle e.
- the planes intersect each other at the edge 22.
- the side edges of the planes are denoted with the reference numeral 23.
- the bottom face 25 of the blade is horizontal.
- the blade angle a (Fig. 10) at the cutting edge of the blade is larger than 45°, preferably 65 to 75°.
- the main part of the upper face of the blade and the lower face of the blade form an angle b with each other, which said angle b is smaller - than the blade angle a proper is.
- Fig. 10 shows the different phases 1 to 6 of the cutting-off of a pile 5.
- the hydraulic cylinders produce a horizontal force, whereby the blade 16 is pressed into the side of the pile 5 and the cutting edge 24 first applies a cutting force to the pile. After that, the part of the upper face which has the smaller inclination angle brings about a wedge effect and starts inclining the top of the pile. In this way, a bending moment is produced, which is also increased by the weight of the pile as inclined. A crack is formed in the pile in front of the blade edge 24, and the pile is broken by the effect of the tensile stress caused by the bending moment.
- the shearing effect is directed at the pile first at two points, which makes the cutting more efficient. Then, cutting is continued so that the sides of the pile are cut before the middle part of the pile.
- Fig. 11 shows the path of movement 27 of the edge 24 of the blade 16.
- the blade tends to move upwards.
- the counter-face of the counterpiece 17 has been mounted in a somewhat inclined position, whereby the counterpiece can turn downwards while the blade is rising.
- a suitable size of the angle c is about 1 to 5°, preferably about 2 to 3°.
- the raised position of the blade and the inclined position of the counterpiece are shown by using broken lines.
- Piles may also be cut off on the shore.
- the same cutting principle may also be used for cutting-off horizontal concrete beams. In such a case, the blade is pressed against the beam preferably from above.
- the edge 26 between the cutting edge and the main part of the upper face of the blade may also be rounded.
- one of the sides of the frame of the cutting tool may be divided into two parts, in which case each end can be pivoted around its own pivot shaft 19. Thereat the locking device 20 locks the parts of the side to each other. It is also possible to use a frame in which two sides are pivotable around an articulated joint, the other ends of the said sides being locked to each other.
- the counterpiece may also be V-shaped, in a way similar to the blade. In such a case, the pile to be cut off is centered very well in its place.
- the number of hydraulic cylinders may also be different from two.
