Abstract
The discharge vessel (12) made of quartz glass is surrounded by an evacuated envelope bulb (17) made of tempered glass, on which a coating (18) of silicon-iron oxide, which produces the asymmetrical low beam which is conventional in motor vehicle lamps, is applied. The transparent part of the envelope bulb (17) is provided on its inner surface with a coating (20) that reflects IR radiation and transmits visible radiation.
Description
In motor vehicle incandescent lamps, it is known to mount a dimming cap in the lamp vessel, which partially surrounds the incandescent filament. Such a solution is not practical in the case of motor vehicle discharge lamps, since the high temperatures of the discharge arc would at least cause deformation, if not destruction, of the dimming cap. It has therefore already been proposed to apply a radiation-absorbing coating to the outside of the discharge vessel, which has the same effect as the anti-dazzle device arranged inside the motor vehicle light bulb. However, tests have shown that when such a motor vehicle discharge lamp is installed in a reflector, unfavorable heat conditions can occur which could endanger the stability of the coating.
The invention specified in the main claim and in the subclaims is based on the object of providing a motor vehicle discharge lamp with an integrated means for dimming and a stable operating behavior.
The enveloping bulb made of tempered glass surrounding the discharge vessel and connected to the base controls the heat balance of the lamp, whereby on the one hand an improved color temperature and on the other hand an accelerated start-up of the motor vehicle discharge lamp is achieved. Furthermore, the radiation-absorbing coating applied to the envelope bulb - the coating made of silicon iron oxide already known for motor vehicle light bulbs can be used for this purpose - only has to withstand a low thermal load. By applying an IR radiation-reflecting and visible radiation-transmitting coating on the part of the envelope bulb not provided with the radiation-absorbing coating, both the color temperature and the starting speed of the motor vehicle discharge lamp are further improved. In addition, the proportion of UV radiation is significantly reduced in this way.
