- Ceramic monoliths require secure and shock-absorbing fastening because of their risk of breakage under extreme operating conditions (vibrations, pressure surges, temperature changes). Since they can not be produced in any size, there is still the need to combine several elements in a battery to the z. B. in power plant emissions per unit of time flowing large gas volumes.
- the buffer sleeve can e.g. B. consist of mineral fiber, ceramic fiber, wire mesh or other temperature-resistant elastic materials. After it has been pushed onto the monolith from its end face (s), the metal frame is pushed over the sleeve, whereby the elastic sleeve can be compressed. This compression can also be achieved or reinforced by a sleeve material that expands once when heated. Such a material is e.g. B. a so-called expanded mica mat, as z. B. is sold by the company 3M under the name INTERAM®.
- the required heat treatment can be carried out after installation or only in operation by exposure to hot exhaust gases, e.g. B. a hot flue gas can be made.
- the frame is provided on one end face with securing stops which engage around the end face of the catalyst and thus prevent axial displacement of the catalyst element by positive locking.
- the metal frame on its end face projects inwards with the formation of a continuous stop or a stop divided into a plurality of “tongues” for an edge zone of the end face of the catalyst element.
- the combination of buffer sleeve and metal frame can therefore be provided for attachment to at least one end section of the catalyst element.
- the left designed as an exploded drawing, shows a 1 m long monolithic ceramic catalyst element 1 of square cross-section (edge length 150 mm), which is traversed over its entire length by numerous square flow channels, in which the exhaust gas to be treated flows and comes into contact with the catalyst .

- a 3 cm deep frame 3 made of temperature-resistant steel corresponds to the outer shape of the monolith and sleeve and has a slightly smaller inner free cross-section than the sum of the end faces of the catalyst element and buffer sleeve (158 mm ⁇ 158 mm). It is provided on two adjacent side surfaces with rectangular recesses 4 in a matching shape and arrangement (dimensions 10 mm ⁇ 100 mm). The two remaining side surfaces are provided with rectangular projections 5, which can positively engage in the above-described recesses in adjacent frames of a package of held catalyst elements.

- the monolith provided with the holding device at both ends can then be put together with other equally equipped monoliths via the tongue and groove connection 4/5 to form a catalyst package.
