- the machines for packaging cigarettes are equipped with control devices which come into action after the formation of groups of twenty cigarettes arranged in a three-row arrangement, the outer rows of which contain seven cigarettes and the inner row of six cigarettes. In these groups, the cigarettes are pressed against each other and their ends are free. Elongated probes, movable longitudinally with respect to a support, are then brought into contact with the ends of the cigarettes and if a cigarette is missing or is only partially filled with tobacco at its end, the corresponding probe undergoes an abnormal displacement which can be detected, the detection signal being in turn used to trigger certain operations such as the ejection of the group having a malformation or any other judicious operation. Control devices are already known in which the probes are provided with electrical contacts. However, this arrangement was not satisfactory given the oxidation of the contacts and the difficulty there is in maintaining devices of this kind.
