Definitions
- the present invention relates to a wheelchair for the disabled, in particular for a child, comprising a chassis provided on each of its longitudinal sides with a propulsion assembly comprising an arm carrying a driving wheel and a handrail at its ends as well as a transmission connecting the drive wheel in the handrail.
- the handrails of manually propelled wheelchairs are generally located in the immediate vicinity of the rear wheel tires.
- the disabled person moves his wheelchair on a wet or dirty floor, he risks staining the lower ends of the sleeves of his clothes at all times.
- the present invention proposes to remedy this drawback and, to do this, it relates to a wheelchair of the aforementioned type which is characterized in that the propulsion assemblies constitute removable assemblies arranged on the longitudinal sides of the chassis.
- This set of provisions makes it possible to move the handrails away from the drive wheels and thus prevents the disabled person from getting dirty by moving his wheelchair on wet or muddy ground.
- the arms of the propulsion assemblies are pivotally mounted on supports fixed to the longitudinal sides of the chassis while locking means are provided to immobilize them on the supports in any one of several predetermined positions.
- the height of the handrails can therefore be modified according to the size of the disabled person, which makes it possible to limit the; the better the efforts it has to make to get around.
- the wheelchair according to the invention is more particularly useful for children since its handrails can be adjusted in height as they grow.
- the locking means consist of bolt-nut assemblies threaded through threatened holes in the arms and in the supports, the arms, respectively the supports, included a soul hole while the supports, respectively the arms, comprise a series of holes distributed along a circular arc centered on the pivot axis of the arms.
- the height adjustment of the handrails is therefore possible in this case by threading the bolt-nut assemblies in the hole of the arms, respectively of the supports, as well as in a predetermined hole of the series of holes made in the supports, respectively the arms.
- the supports of the arms can be moved along the longitudinal sides of the chassis.
- the ends of the arms which carry the drive wheels are preferably located at the rear of the chassis.
- the wheelchair that can be seen in the drawings comprises a chassis 1 provided on each of its longitudinal sides with a drive wheel 2, with a handrail 3 capable of rotating the corresponding drive wheel when it is driven in rotation, and a steering wheel 4.

- the handrails 3 are located between the driving wheels and the steering wheels, so as to be easily accessible to a disabled person installed on the seat. 5 which rests on the chassis 1.
- the handrails are circular and have a diameter much larger than that of the chassis wheels. They are in fact made with a large diameter so that the disabled person can move the wheelchair with as little effort as possible.
- the driving wheels 2 and the handrails 3 are rotatably mounted at the ends of two arms 6 (only one of which is shown in the drawings) carried by supports 7 fixed on the longitudinal sides of the chassis.
- the arms 6 are hollow and each contain an endless chain 8 stretched between two toothed wheels 9, 10 respectively wedged on the axes of the wheel 2 and of the corresponding handrail 3.
- the arms 6 are provided with a tab 11 in the vicinity of the rear end of their upper side and a tab 12 substantially in the middle of their lower side. They are articulated on an axis 13 integral with the corresponding support 7, this axis being threaded in a bore made in their lug 11. They are moreover fixed on the corresponding support 7 by means of a bolt-nut assembly 14 threaded in a hole made in their tab 12 as well as in one of the holes 15 made in the corresponding support along an arc of a circle centered on the axis 13.
- the height of the handrails 3 can be modified by rotating the arms 6 around the axes 13 and inserting the bolt-nut assemblies 14 in other holes 15 in order to immobilize the arms 6 in the desired inclined position.
- the handrail is in its extreme low position, the bolt-nut assembly 14 shown in this figure being threaded into the bore 15 which is the lowest.
- the supports 7 are each provided with five tapped holes 17 made so that two successive holes can selectively receive the bolts 16.
- FIG. 2 shows the handrail 3 in the position it occupies when the bolts 16 are threaded in the second and third tapped holes 17 from the left while Figure 4 shows it in the position it occupies when the bolts 16 are threaded into the fourth and fifth tapped holes 17 from the left.
- the handrails of the wheelchair according to the present invention are adjustable in height and movable along the longitudinal sides of the frame so that the disabled person can move the chair in the most favorable conditions.

Abstract
Description
- . la figure 1 est une vue schématique de côté d'un fauteuil roulant conforme à l'invention ;
- . la figure 2 est une vue partielle, à échelle agrandie et avec arrachements, du fauteuil roulant visible sur la figure 1 ;
