Definitions
- the invention relates to a thermal ribbon, in particular thermocarbon ribbon, with a plastic film as a carrier and a layer formed on one side of the plastic film from a plastic-bound melting ink, and to a method which is particularly suitable for producing this thermal ribbon.
- Thermal ribbons have on a film-like carrier. e.g. B. made of paper or plastic, a melting color in the form of a wax-bonded color or soot layer. The melting ink is melted during the printing process by means of a thermal print head and transferred to the printing paper. Suitable thermal printers are e.g. B. from DE-OS 3 224 445 known. The individual procedure can be as follows:
- the thermal print head of the printer there is a symbol consisting of heated dots and to be printed on a sheet of paper, e.g. B. a letter.
- the thermal print head is pressed onto the thermal ink ribbon by means of a spring, which thereby comes into contact with the side to be written on of a paper sheet lying on a printing roller.
- the thermal ribbon is heated to a maximum of about 400 ° C in the area of the symbol to be printed during the printing process.
- the symbol is melted and remains on the paper sheet when the thermal ribbon is removed.
- the used part of the thermal ribbon is fed continuously to a spool.
- Thermal ribbons with wax-based melting ink show various disadvantages: For example, smearing of the melting ink often occurs during handling.
- the older EP-A-154 438 describes a thermocarbon tape in which there is a wax layer on a plastic-bound melting ink (see claim 1).
- the older EP-A-198 505 deals with a similar thermocarbon tape, in which the melting ink is two-layered and a wax layer can be on it (see claim 1 in connection with example 1).
- EP-A-154438 and EP-A-198505 are considered prior art under Art. 54 (3) (4) EPC.
- the essence of the invention is that that on a carrier, for. B. in the form of a thermoplastic plastic having a relatively high softening point, in particular above a temperature of 190 ° C, or in the form of paper or the like, a layer of a plastic-bound melting paint with a coating of a wax.
- the plastic-bound melting ink of the thermal ink ribbon according to the invention contains a thermoplastic. Not every thermoplastic is suitable for this. Rather, the softening point plays an important role with regard to the melting conditions that arise during the printing process.
- the softening point is regularly between 60 and 140 ° C, preferably between 70 and 120 ° C and in particular between 70 and 90 ° C.
- the optimum softening point in each case depends, as already mentioned, on the type of thermoplastic material used.
- Advantageous thermoplastic materials are in particular polystyrene, polyamide, polyvinyl acetate, ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer, polymethacrylates and / or polyacrylates.
- thermoplastic materials of the plastic-bound melting ink such as.
- suitable plasticizers such as carbon black, but also solvent- and / or binder-soluble dyes, such as the commercial product Baso print and various azo dyes (e.g. Ceres and Sudan dyes). Carbon black is particularly suitable in the context of the invention.
- wax layer as the top coating of the wax-bound melting ink.
- wax is used in the context of the invention, this should be understood in the broadest sense.
- Such a material should generally have the following properties: not kneadable at 20 ° C., solid to brittle, coarse to fine crystalline, translucent to opaque, but not glassy; Meltable above 40 ° C without decomposition, but a little above the melting point, relatively low-viscosity and not stringy.
- paraffins silicones
- natural wax in particular carnauba wax, beeswax, ozokerite and paraffin wax
- synthetic wax in particular acid waxes, ester waxes, partially saponified ester waxes and polyethylene waxes.
- the wax layer should generally be about 0.5 to 7 microns thick, with the range of 1 to 3 microns being preferred.
- the layer of the plastic-bound melting ink has a corresponding thickness, with the value of 1 to 3 micrometers also being preferred here. Basically, however, the thickness of the two layers mentioned is not critical for the desired effect. It is important that the thermal print head can transfer enough heat to allow the desired melting processes to take place during the printing process.
- the thermal ribbon according to the invention described above can be produced in a variety of ways using customary application methods. This can be done by spraying on or printing on a dispersion, be it with water or with an organic solvent as a dispersion or solvent, by applying from the melt, which applies in particular to the wax layer, or by normal application using a doctor blade in the form of an aqueous Suspension with finely distributed material to be applied with the wax material on the one hand and the thermoplastic material on the other hand and with the other constituents mentioned.
- the following procedure has proven to be particularly advantageous:
- an aqueous suspension is applied to the carrier in a thin layer, which, when the water evaporates, gives rise to the layer of the plastic-bound melting ink which, in addition to the thermoplastic, contains the colorant and, if appropriate, further additives of the type described above.
- an aqueous suspension of finely divided wax material is applied, the water being evaporated off in a conventional manner after the application of this material.
- the double-layer covering formed fulfills all requirements which are directed towards a melting color. Of course, this also applies regardless of the type of manufacture, i. H. also for a thermal ribbon according to the invention produced in a different way. In any case, not only is the problem of smearing conventional wax-bound melting colors mentioned at the outset rectified, but there is also the advantage of improved print sharpness during the printing process.
- the reason for the particularly advantageous low-cost printing with the thermal ink ribbon according to the invention has not yet been clarified in detail.
- the following explanation would be conceivable:
- the top wax layer of the thermal ink ribbon according to the invention could act as an affinity mediator between the plastic of the plastic-bound melting ink and the paper to be printed. This means that the wax has a greater affinity for paper under the conditions of thermal printing than the plastic-bound melting ink. This also applies to normal conditions. This is shown by the fact that a misprint can be easily erased, for example by means of a conventional eraser, with the colorless wax layer on the paper remains. You can then rewrite again without any impairment.
- there are of course other ways to remedy a misprint This can be done, for example, by printing an adhesive correction tape, the adhesiveness beginning at the thermal printing temperature. One would speak of a "lift-off system" here.
- thermal ribbon according to the invention is that it is not subject to any restrictions with regard to the paper to be written on. Relatively rough papers can be printed perfectly with excellent print sharpness. Particularly favorable results are achieved if the wax material and the thermoplastic material in the plastic-bound melting ink are matched by preliminary tests with a view to optimization. These experiments are purely manual and can be carried out with little effort.
- a plastic film in the form of a 6 micron thick polyethylene terephthalate film (softening point about 260 ° C.) is coated on one side with an aqueous dispersion of the following composition: 60 parts by weight of a 35% aqueous ethylene vinyl acetate dispersion (Ehatex 5601) 10 parts by weight of a 50% aqueous dispersion of a thermophenic resin (Ehatex KA 300) 10 parts by weight of carbon black dispersion (15% in water with 6% wetting agent, anionic) (Derussol A) 19.9 parts by weight of water 0.1 part by weight of wetting agent (non-ionic fluorosurfactant / fluorate FC-430/3 M)
- aqueous wax dispersion of the following composition: 32 parts by weight of ester wax (montan ester wax / LG wax) 8 parts by weight of fatty alcohol ethoxylate (Emulan OSN) 60 parts by weight of water
- the aqueous wax dispersion is also applied using a doctor blade.
- the applied layer is about 2 microns thick. Evaporation of the water follows again in the manner described above.
- the thermal ribbon is now cut for later use and rolled onto a spool. Cutting does not show the smearing that occurs with known thermal ribbons. Excellent prints are achieved with the thermal ink ribbon according to the invention.

Description
10 Gewichtsteile Rußdispersion (15%ig in Wasser mit 6 % Netzmittel, anionenaktiv) (Derussol A)
19,9 Gewichtsteile Wasser
32 Gewichtsteile Esterwachs (Montanesterwachs/LG-Wachs)
8 Gewichtsteile Fettalkoholethoxylat (Emulan OSN)
