Description

The invention relates to a mechanical method for applying adhesive to book block spines or the like, with an application roller which rolls with its circumference on the book block spine and thereby transfers an adhesive film.

For gluing book block spines, for example for the back-gluing operations with a paper or attaching a decorative ribbon to the head and foot of the book block, elastic profile rollers are used which are adapted to the contour of the book block spine. A known adhesive application system provides an application roller which is in contact with a scooping and dosing roller running in a glue reservoir in order to remove an adhesive film from the latter and transfer it to the back of the book block, for which purpose the application roller is timed to the book block transport in the sense of putting on and taking off is movable back and forth to the back of the book block.

When profile rollers are used as the adhesive transfer element, the problem arises due to a known exact adjustment to the book block back contour that full-surface gluing cannot be achieved when the roller is attached. Apart from the unevenly falling or deformed block backs, there is basically no correspondence between the roll profile and the back curvature, insofar as a roll profile is used for different back shapes for cost reasons with regard to changeover time and storage.

When the applicator roller is placed on the spine of the book block with a flatter profile in relation to the spine shape, the roller leaves a parabolic-glued back surface, i. H. the corners of the back are not given any glue. Conversely, the central area of the back remains without adhesive when the application roller is attached if the latter has a profile that is steeper than the back shape.

This inadequate gluing in the initial area of the book block spine, which is highly undesirable and leads to a reduction in quality, is due to the fact that the application roller does not have the time necessary to adapt to the back contour of the continuous book block.

In order to counteract such non-area-wide gluing, the application roller is often already moved into the lower end position before the book block reaches the roller, which however has the disadvantage that when the roller hits the front edge of the book block, an adhesive bead in front of the cut surface of the book block sets. This effect is intensified to the extent that the concave profile of the application roller produces different peripheral speeds and thus different adhesive application speeds. Depending on the linear speed of the book blocks, the application roller runs at an orbital speed oriented to its mean diameter, which is generally slightly below the transport speed of the book blocks, with the result that the middle region of the application roller moves at a speed which is lower than the linear speed of the book block, which favors the formation of jams on the cut surface.

This is where the invention comes in, with the object of creating a method for the mechanical application of adhesive to book block spines of the type which ensures a uniform, full-surface application of adhesive to the book block spine and prevents the cutting surface adjacent to the book block spine from being contaminated by adhesive.

The object of the invention is achieved in that in a method for the mechanical application of adhesive to book block spines or the like. With an application roller that rolls with its circumference on the book block spine and thereby applies an adhesive film, the application roller for attachment to the book block spine for a short time an average rotational speed which is higher than the transport speed is driven. Advantageously, the applicator roll runs at a 10 - 20% speed increase strength. According to a further feature of the method, the application roller for setting down the book block spine is driven at an average rotational speed which is lower than the transport speed of the book blocks.

By increasing the speed of rotation of the application roller at the time of attachment to the book block spine, a larger amount of adhesive can be fed to the spine and spread over the entire surface of the book block in the manner of a spread or spread / effect. At the same time, due to the higher peripheral speed of the applicator roller compared to the spine of the book, an adhesive bead on the transition to the cut surface and thus contamination is reliably avoided, since the roller pulls the adhesive away from the cut surface and does not build up. It has been shown that a 10-20% increase in speed leads to optimal gluing.

Of course, the method can be used for an adhesive application system with a pivotable application roller as well as for a stationary application roller.

In contrast to the increase in speed when attaching the application roller to the back of the book block, a reduction in speed is of crucial importance for the removal of the application roller. In contrast to the preparation, a reduced adhesive supply is achieved and the adhesive is retained from the cut surface of the book block. This also prevents contamination of the cut surface.
