Description
The invention relates to a method for the surface treatment of substrates made of thermoplastic materials. The invention also includes an apparatus for performing the method.
- The surface treatment is usually carried out under atmospheric pressure and in the presence of air. The search
An extended variant of the above methods is the so-called plasma treatment, which is characterized in that the process is carried out in a vacuum in order to increase the kinetic energy of the ions and electrons in the electric field. US Pat. No. 3,057,792 is representative of this type of treatment.
As can be seen from the representation of the prior art, only gases are generally used as reactive media. The object of the present invention was therefore to develop a method which also allows the use of reactive substances in liquid form and thus considerably expands the possibilities of surface modification.
This object is achieved by a method of the type mentioned at the outset, the characteristic feature of which is that at least one surface of the substrate is exposed to reactive ionized substances from the liquid phase simultaneously with the corona treatment in the corona discharge zone. In particular, should the substrate is in sheet form, preferably in the form of a film.
In the preferred embodiment of the method, the ionized substances are to be introduced into the corona discharge zone from the liquid state or from the state dissolved in liquid. It must be regarded as particularly surprising that the method can be carried out in this form, since in previous attempts in which liquids were introduced into conventional corona discharge apparatuses, the liquid that was introduced always led to short-circuits or dielectric breakdowns and thus to the destruction of the treated films.
The method according to the invention can therefore not be carried out with conventional devices, but a device is required in which the liquid used for the method as the "active" electrode is a necessary component of the electrode system, i.e. the liquid is used to form the corona discharge. By directly involving the liquid in the discharge process, reaction mechanisms are triggered, which are reflected in a chemical modification of the surface of the treated film. Depending on the type of liquid used, active centers in the form of functional groups and radicals are created on the treated plastic surface, which act as reaction partners for the subsequent processes.
The device with which the method according to the invention is carried out should be explained for the sake of better understanding with the aid of the drawings.

- Fig. 2 zeigt schematisch eine durch eine konventionelle Coronabehandlungsvorrichtung ergänzte Vorrichtung.2 schematically shows a device supplemented by a conventional corona treatment device.
Fig. 3 shows a device according to the invention in a schematic representation, in which the substrate can be treated simultaneously with different liquids.
Fig. 4 shows a schematic representation of a device according to the invention, with which gas can be applied simultaneously.
In the simplest embodiment, the device for carrying out the method consists of an earthed support surface over which the substrate is guided and a high-voltage electrode. The characteristic feature of the device can be seen in the fact that the high-voltage electrode is an electrode profile 4 which is open towards the supporting surface and is filled with a
The electrode profile is preferably made of dielectric material such as glass, ceramic, porcelain or plastic and is in the form of an upwardly open trough, a channel, a bowl or a trough which can be filled with liquid.
The liquid is preferably an inorganic or a non-combustible organic liquid, particularly preferably an aqueous solution. In particular, aqueous solutions of organic acids such as acetic acid, propionic acid, haloacetic acid, for example trichloroacetic acid, oxalic acid, malonic acid or hy d roxycarboxylic acids or mixtures or salts thereof can be used. Aqueous solutions of inorganic acids or alkalis or their salts can also be used, such as sulfuric acid or sulfates, hydrochloric acid or chlorides, chlorites, chlorates, sodium hydroxide solution, potassium hydroxide solution or corresponding hydroxyl compounds or ammonia or ammonium salts. Organic solvents, preferably those which are miscible with water, can also be used. Examples of these are alcohols such as ethanol or methanol, ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone or such as acetone, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran etc. The above list of liquids or liquid additives is not intended to be exhaustive; Surface treatment of plastic substrates.
The
Compared to the version according to FIG. 1, the device shown in FIG. 2 represents a combination of the method according to the invention with a conventional corona pretreatment. The
The pretreatment station shown in FIG. 3 allows the method according to the invention to be carried out in several subsequent steps, wherein different liquids can be used. The system is accordingly equipped with two
With the device variant shown in FIG. 4, it is possible to combine the treatment method according to the invention with a gas treatment. Gases blown directly into the discharge region via a
The application of the inventive method described rens and all of its variants are not tied to specific working conditions. It can be practiced both under normal atmospheric pressure and in a vacuum.
One parameter that influences the treatment result is the electrical conductivity of the liquid used for the process. The liquids used usually have sufficiently high conductivities to be able to carry out the process with satisfactory results. However, if liquids with low conductivities, in particular nonionic organic liquids, are to be used, it has proven to be particularly advantageous in practice if a metallic electrode, e.g. a thin wire is inserted, but its position must generally be a few millimeters below the surface of the liquid.
Normally, the liquids can be fed to the electrode profile without special procedural measures. Under certain circumstances, however, it may be advantageous to heat the liquid above the low temperature that is inevitably dictated by the process heat, which makes the molecular structure more mobile and the liquid more reactive.
Compared to the known corona devices, the device according to the invention differs in particular by the novel electrode. In order to achieve a high energy density at the electrode, it has proven to be partially emphasized to keep the electrode surface involved in the discharge as small as possible in order to obtain a sharply focused corona discharge. This requirement is met by the electrode profiles outlined in FIGS. 1 to 4, which have narrow grooves or grooves that are only about 3 to 4 mm wide. As shown in Figure 3, the use of electrode profiles with one or more grooves is possible.
The coupling of the electrode profile to the high-voltage generator takes place via a metallic contact that protrudes into the channel filled with liquid.
As an alternative to the previously discussed electrode structure, in which the electrode profile filled with liquid represents the live electrode, but the roller represents the grounded counter electrode, this arrangement can also be reversed. In this case, it has proven to be advantageous to replace the metallic roller body with dielectric layer used as the support surface by the roller construction described in EP-
In the practical testing of the method and the device according to the invention, it has been found that more or less as electrical supply units Without exception, all corona generators on the market are suitable, regardless of which output frequency they deliver.
Since the discharge process is coupled with the consumption of the liquid used, constant liquid replenishment must be ensured. This can be done in the simplest form via free-standing containers or alternatively using metering pumps.
The present method according to the invention for modifying plastic surfaces by means of corona discharge expands the possibilities of chemical modification of plastic materials considerably by including liquids in the discharge process. Depending on the type of liquids used, surface treatments that are coordinated with the subsequent finishing steps such as coating, printing, laminating, metallizing, etc. can be carried out.
The method according to the invention has proven to be particularly suitable for the pretreatment of film webs which are further processed into laminates. The surfaces of two independent film webs are treated separately according to the process and then brought together under pressure and heat, whereby a permanently firm connection of the film webs is achieved.
The embodiment described below is intended Describe the method according to the invention even more clearly.
The surface of a 50 / µm thick polyethylene terephthalate film was treated by the method according to the present invention. An aqueous ammonia solution with a concentration of 30% was used as the liquid. The film was passed the treatment station at a speed of 20 m / min. The distance between the electrode and the film was 2 mm, and the power of the medium frequency generator used was 1,000 W at 24 kHz.
A film treated in this way was examined by the method of ESCA spectroscopy (Electron Spectroscopy Chemical Analysis). With this method, the kinetic energy of electrons that leave the molecular structure is determined and calculated against an X-ray radiation irradiated with constant energy. An untreated polyethylene terephthalate film was examined using the same method. The results are shown in Figure 5.
The untreated film shows no signs indicating the presence of nitrogen, while the film treated as indicated above has a clear maximum in the energy range characteristic for nitrogen (4UU electron volts). Surprisingly, there is also an influence in the area of the energy characteristic of carbon (approx. 285 electro nenvolt) was observed, which is also shown in Figure 5.
