Description

The present invention relates to protective helmets used in particular by motorcyclists, racers, etc. and it relates more particularly to a mobile screen device for helmets of the so-called "integral" type, that is to say comprising a part made of material and extending around the chin of the user.

In known helmets of this type, there is provided a transparent screen articulated on the helmet, so that it can be moved between a position of use in which it is folded down to hide the opening of the helmet, and a raised position in which he releases this opening.

This screen is usually made of a relatively flexible transparent plastic material comprising, at appropriate points, articulation means cooperating with complementary means provided on the helmet.

When the screen is folded down in the use position, it is not usually positively locked in this position, since such a lock would require the use of a special member, for example in the lower edges of the screen , and adapted to cooperate with means complementary to the lower front part of the helmet.

In addition, the articulation means are pins or bosses which project outwardly from the helmet shell and the edges of the screen always form continuous projections in the closed position.

It has been noted for some time that the presence of any protrusions on the helmet is dangerous for the user. Furthermore, attempts have also been made to keep the screen as securely as possible in the position of use in order to prevent it from moving, for example under air pressure.

In a helmet of a known type, the cap has a raised part laterally on each side, these raised parts delimiting a shoulder directed towards the front and having a slot in which is frictionally introduced in the folded position of the screen, a tab integral with the latter, the friction of this tab in the shell of the helmet helping to keep the screen more firmly in the closed position. In addition, the axes of articulation of the screen are set back with respect to these projecting lateral parts whose contours are rounded so as to avoid as much as possible the risks of snagging.

The current safety regulations aim to remove all external protrusions on helmets. Consequently, the helmets currently used are not satisfactory from this point of view.

The invention aims to remedy these drawbacks by providing a protective helmet for example for motorcyclists, of the so-called "integral " type , comprising an integrated screen device, having no external projection and in which the screen, flexible or rigid is positively locked in the closed position while being very easily open without actuating any locking mechanism.

The object of the invention is therefore a protective helmet comprising a folding screen having lateral articulation members by means of which it is articulated on the opposite sides of the helmet, characterized in that the upper edge of the closed opening by the screen has a projection forming a stop, the distance between the top of said stop at its midpoint and the axis connecting the points of articulation of the screen being slightly greater than the radius of the circular path followed by the midpoint of the top edge of the screen.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the screen is a sheet of an elastically deformable material, molded in shape or not.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the helmet has a hole at the locations of the axes of articulation of the screen and an elastic inner plate comprising a boss extending towards the outside of the helmet and suitable for closing said hole. , said plate delimiting with the lateral border of the opening of the helmet a slot adapted to receive a tab formed at each end of the screen and constituting said articulation members thereof.

We understand that thanks to this arrangement, when the screen is folded down in the closed position of the opening of the helmet, it deforms elastically to cross the projection forming a stopper below which the upper edge of the screen is blocked by resuming its shape elastically, said deformation allowing it to cross the stop being reproduced, to raise the visor, by exerting a pressure on the lower edge of the screen in the vicinity of each end thereof, inwards.

We understand that following this pressure, the screen deforms again, the middle part of its upper edge deviating from the stop, which allows it to cross to raise it.

The invention will be better understood with the aid of the description which follows, of an exemplary embodiment given solely by way of example and made with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • - Fig. 1 is a partial view in side elevation of a protective helmet according to the invention showing the screen in different positions;

  • - Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of FIG. 4 in which the screen is a semi-rigid screen molded into shape.

On a représenté partiellement à la Fig. 1, la coquille d'un casque classique 1 comportant une ouverture à l'avant, destinée à être fermée par un écran articulé E.Partially shown in FIG. 1, the shell of a conventional helmet 1 comprising an opening at the front, intended to be closed by an articulated screen E.

The front opening of the helmet is formed by a peripheral edge 2 which delimits a strip 3 which is slightly recessed and which is limited on the one hand by an elastic lip 4 and, at its junction with the shell, by a bead 5 in projection, the bead 5 extending over the upper part of the periphery of the front opening of the helmet and the lip 4 over the whole of this periphery.

The bead 5 has, in section, a height progressively increasing from the surface of the shell and, on its side delimiting the strip 3, a height rapidly decreasing forming a rounded shoulder (Fig. 1) directed downwards. The height of the bead 5 being a little greater than the thickness of the plate of transparent material constituting the screen.

The screen E is constituted in a manner known per se by a polycarbonate plate and comprises at each end a rounded tab 6 having as a whole the shape of a hook whose tip 17 has a hole 8 for the passage of an axis articulation as will be explained below.

The external curved part of the tab 6 extends beyond the tip 7 of the hook forming a pronounced elbow whose apex 9 is rounded.

The lateral end of the screen E has been shown in FIG. 1, developed flat so as to show the shape used, which is identical at the two ends of the screen.

Figs. 2 and 3 clearly show the arrangement of the means of articulation of the screen on the helmet.

The shell 1 of the helmet is lined in a known manner by a cap made of an elastic or energy absorbing material designated as a whole by the reference 10 and comprises, in the vicinity of its lower lateral edge, a fixing member 11 for a chinstrap 12.

The chin strap fixing member is a loop 11 in inverted U which maintains fixed on the inner wall of the cap, in the lateral part of the latter, an element 13 which is advantageously also made of polycarbonate, but not necessarily transparent, and which carries an axis of articulation for the screen E.

The internal element 13 comprises a base 14 forming a spacer between the cap of the helmet 1 and the shell. A lug 15 of reduced thickness extends from the base 14 with which it came in one piece and determines a shoulder 16. This lug 15 thus delimiting a passage 17 between it and the internal surface of the cap. At its free end, the tab 15 has a boss 18 which extends freely in a hole 19 in the shell, which passes through the latter and opens to the outside.

The fastening system of the chin strap is generally known, comprising a rigid stirrup 20 around the intermediate part of which extends a loop 21 of the chin strap whose end 22 is folded down below, the branches 24 of the stirrup coming snap on the sides of the loop 11. It is understood that the stirrup 20 maintains the element 13 applied to the inner wall of the shell.

In the interval 17 formed by the tab 15 extends the end 9 of the side tab 6 in the form of a hook of the screen E, the boss 18 extending through the hole 8 of articulation of the screen E. It is understood that to put the screen in place, it suffices to push the boss 18 elastically from the outside of the shell, for example by means of a pencil or any other member and to bring the hole 8 of the side tab of the screen opposite the hole 19, the boss 18 then resiliently taking its place through the hole in the screen and that of the shell. For this purpose, a recess 25 is provided in the thickness of the damping cap 10 lining the interior of the helmet.

It is understood that thanks to this arrangement, the articulation of the helmet is entirely erased inside the latter which thus has no protrusion thus meeting the requirements of security according to which no protrusion must appear on the outside of a protective helmet of this type.

There is shown in E1 in FIG. 1, the screen in the position of use in which it is positively locked by closing the front opening of the helmet, in E2, the screen partially raised in the open position and in E3, the upper edge of the screen crossing the protruding stop 5.

It will be noted in FIG. 1 that the distance a between the axis passing through the articulation points 8 of the screen and the internal surface of the latter in the middle of its upper edge, which constitutes the radius of the circle described by the screen around the the axis joining its two points of articulation 8, which coincide with the holes 9, is less than the distance b which separates this axis from the top of the bead 5 at its midpoint.

This difference b-a is therefore approximately equal to the thickness of this bead.

It is understood that thanks to this arrangement, when the screen E is in the open position and that it is folded towards its closed position, the screen passes through a position as shown in E3 in which its internal surface enters in contact with the portion of increasing thickness of the bead 5 at the upper edge of the screen thus determining a friction braking the continuation of the movement of the screen downwards.

By forcing the screen to continue its downward movement, it deforms due to its flexible nature, the lower edges of the screen approaching each other thus causing a deformation of the upper edge towards the outside, deformation which enables it to cross the bead 5. Having crossed the bead 5, the screen then resumes its shape elastically and its edge is in abutment against the lower edge of the bead 5 as shown in E1.

We understand that the screen is thus positively locked against the bead 5 forming a stop and that even if air rushes inside the helmet tending to deform its lower edge outwards, this deformation has the effect apply the upper edge more closely laughing of the screen against the lip 4 and in abutment against the bead 5.

In the opposite direction, to raise the screen 5, the user can manually approach the two lateral lower edges of the screen so as to cause a widening of its upper edge allowing it to easily cross the bead 5.

Clearly seen in this figure, the arrangement of the tab 15 relative to the shell and the slot formed therewith for the passage of the end of the screen E.

Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of FIG. 4 in which the screen E4 is of the flexible type molded into shape and has, at the limit of its lateral tab 6, a shoulder 26 which roughly compensates for the thickness of the outer shell of the helmet at the location where the screen, thus completing the surface of the helmet and eliminating another protrusion.

The helmet according to the invention is therefore completely devoid of any external projection which could present a danger to the user in the event of impacts or falls, comprises a positive locking screen which is very easily interchangeable and inexpensive to manufacture due to the elimination of the metal articulation members which in the helmets of the prior art had to be incorporated into the molding in the shell of the helmet.

In addition, the boss 18 closing almost completely the hole 19 also opposes any penetration of moisture.

Finally, the narrow slot delimited by the lug 15 of the elastic element 13 between the shell of the helmet and its inner lining cap, receives the rear end of the lug 6 at each end of the screen, with friction, thus contributing to maintain the screen in position, in particular in the raised position of the latter in which the extended part 9 of the tab 6 is still engaged in this slot because of its shape, studied for this purpose.
