Definitions
- the invention relates to a horn switch for use in electrical networks with short-circuit or earth-fault disconnection by circuit breakers, with two mutually V-shaped horn electrodes provided as base points for the switching arc.
- Horn switches of the type described have been used in particular in power supply systems for electrical railways for many years. They are used as disconnectors or switch disconnectors for the electrical connection and disconnection of catenary sections with or from the power supply system. They are usually arranged as outdoor switches on masts or portals. Their advantage lies in the simple open construction and the almost negligible maintenance effort, in the relative independence from atmospheric influences given by the use of an air separation section and in the clear recognition of their switching status. They regularly require the presence of an additional circuit breaker.
- Horn switches each have a fixed and a pivotable isolator, which can be actuated manually or by means of a motor by means of a switch rod, to which the specially shaped horns are connected at the top.
- the arc that arises when the contacts disconnect when switched off is picked up by the horns above, rises up there and extinguishes. This is the simplest quenching principle for a switching arc.
- the ASEA company specified a device in which a phototransistor responds to the light from arcing faults and triggers a circuit breaker that cuts off the power supply via a downstream amplifier.
- this device is not only relatively complex but also expediently remains limited to use in indoor switchgear.
- Another device, which can also only be used in indoor switchgear, has a pressure switch which reacts to the increase in internal cell pressure due to the thermal effects of the electric arc and which, bypassing normal system protection, triggers the energy feed switch.
- the object of the invention is to provide a simple device for horn switches with which the escape of the switching arc from an allowed into an unauthorized burning area and associated damage to adjacent system parts can be prevented and it solves this problem in that with a horn switch at the defined boundary between an allowed and an illegal firing range for the switching arc, an earthed third electrode for the switching arc is arranged.
- the advantage of the device according to the invention is that by means of an inexpensive, easy-to-install and maintenance-free element, it triggers the desired function of triggering the upstream Energy feed-in switch is brought about by causing a short circuit due to the arcing fault occurring over the limit of the permitted firing range and thus triggering the so-called short interruption.
- This device works equally well in both indoor and outdoor installation of the handset switch.
- a switch drive element not shown here, is used in a known manner, which is connected to the lever 3 via a linkage. It can be operated by hand or by means of an electric motor, electromagnetic or pneumatic drive.
- two-wing contact elements 8, 9 are arranged, the first wings of which are designed correspondingly as contact springs and contact blades and the second wings of which are pierced terminal lugs for cable lugs (not shown here) of flexible connecting lines.
- the horns 10 , 11 are arranged directly on the contact elements 8, 9, which advantageously consist of electrolytic copper with a round cross section and whose shape is the result of long attempts at optimization.
- an inclination of 45 ° to the vertical has proven to be optimal for the ends of the horns 10 , 11 which are advantageously straight.
- the third elec- L rode 12 for the arc can advantageously be designed very simply as a U-shaped metallic bracket which is mechanically connected to the console 1 at ground potential at the free ends of its parallel legs, for example by screwing, welding or riveting. As a result, the bracket 12 is also fully incorporated into the operational grounding.
- the short crossbar of the bracket 12 is the part of the third electrode according to the invention that actually interacts with the arc. Its vertical distance from an imaginary connecting line of the ends of the swung out horns 1 0 , 11, by which the position of the defined boundary between the permitted and unauthorized burning range of the switching arc is represented in an area, is to be individually determined depending on the design and installation conditions of the switch.
- the short crossbar of the bracket 12 need not be arranged perpendicular to the plane spanned by the horns 10 , 11. It is obvious that when designing the bracket 12 all regulations for the minimum distances to be observed between live and earthed parts must be observed.
- the pivotable insulator 5 When the horn switch is opened, which is done by pulling the actuating member onto the end of the pivot lever 3, the pivotable insulator 5 is pivoted about the axis 4 in the opposite direction of the clockwise rotation. First, the corresponding contact parts of the contact elements 8, 9 come out of engagement. If the switch opens when a load current flows, a switching arc arises between the contact elements 8, 9 due to the evaporation of the last metal bridge as a result of the current heat, which initially maintains the switch contacts as the base point and therefore lengthens as the contacts widen further.
- the arc In normal switch operation, the arc should extinguish at the latest when its base points get in the immediate vicinity of the ends of the horns 1 0 , 11 or at these ends themselves. But, for whatever reason, if the power pending exceeds the nominal switch-off power of the switch, the switching arc at foot points that come to a standstill at the ends of the horns will try to lengthen by arching its arch shape and thereby reach an area in which other equipment is located: either thermal damage to this equipment or an unauthorized jumping of the arc onto this equipment could occur.
- the remedy proposed according to the invention is that the third fully grounded electrode, to which the arc is transferred, is arranged at the border of the above-mentioned area in which other operating resources are located, so that a so-called arc earth fault or in the case of traction current supply as a rule existing single-phase networks an arc short circuit occurs.
- this is one of the unavoidable malfunctions for which the operation must be prepared and which can actually be routinely eliminated by triggering the circuit breaker responsible for the area concerned.
