Definitions
- the invention relates to a method and. Device for compacting foundry molding material, in particular wet molding sand, by the sudden action of gas pressure on the molding material poured over the model.
- Compression processes of this type are known in several embodiments (for example DE-AS 1 961 234, DE-OS 29 49 340) and have recently gained increasing economic importance. They differ essentially in the way in which the pressure wave is generated. For example, either a high-pressure gas contained in a pre-pressure chamber is suddenly brought to relaxation (DE-AS 1 961 234) or it is immediately above of the mold space the gas pressure is generated by the explosion of a combustible gas mixture. In addition to these two basic methods, a large number of variants are known, which need not be discussed here, since they do not affect the invention. In all embodiments, the pressure wave generated hits the molding material surface and then leads to a compression of the molding material.
- the degree of compression depends not only on the parameters (pressure, speed) of the gas pressure wave, but also on the height of the molding material filling.

- the invention is based on the object of proposing a method and a device with the aid of which uniform compression over the mold height can be achieved with a minimum requirement for molding material.
- This object is achieved in that a gas-permeable additional mass is placed on the free surface of the molding material and that the gas pressure is brought into effect on the free surface of the additional mass.
- the invention also differs from other known proposals, according to which a cover is placed on the surface of the molding material. This acts, even if it is made of elastic material (US Pat. No. 2,830,339), practically like a compression piston, without the compression gas being able to penetrate into the bed of molding material.

- the devices necessary for the manipulation of the molding box 3, the filling frame 4 and the gas collecting space 5, as well as those for filling the molding space with molding sand, can be of a conventional type and are therefore not shown in detail.
- a container 7 is connected to the gas collecting space 5 via a line 8, in which container 7 either compressed gas is stored or is generated by the explosion of a combustible gas mixture.
- a valve can optionally be arranged which, after opening, allows the pressure wave to pass into the gas collecting space.
- This device also includes an additional mass 10 which is placed on the free molding material surface 11 within the filling frame 4 before the compression process.
- This additional mass 10 consists of an outer shell 12, for example a perforated plate, a fabric or the like. and a filling 13 of high specific weight particles, e.g. Metal granules, metal shot or the like ..
- the additional mass 12 is fastened to a lifting device 14 by means of a traction cable 15, by means of which it can be lowered onto the surface of the molding material and later lifted from the compressed form.
- the Switzerlandsei I 15 gives the additional mass 10 the freedom of movement necessary for the compression stroke in the direction perpendicular to the molding material surface.
- the additional mass can also be mounted on the lifting device 14 via a pawl which engages with a corresponding catch on the additional mass in order to be able to lift it off the finished shape. To apply the additional mass, this latch then only has to be loosened so that it falls on the molding material filling.

Abstract
In a process for compacting foundry molding material, in particular wet molding sand, by the sudden action of gas pressure on the free surface of the molding material heaped over the model 2, a gas-permeable additional mass is used to improve the compression and to regulate the necessary molding material excess on the free molding material surface 10 placed, which consists of several individual masses movable in the direction perpendicular to the molding material surface, the gas pressure being brought into effect on the free surface of the additional mass. This additional mass 10 is used both in compression processes that work with an expansion of stored compressed gas or with a pressure gas wave generated by an explosion.
Description
The invention relates to a method and. Device for compacting foundry molding material, in particular wet molding sand, by the sudden action of gas pressure on the molding material poured over the model.
DE-AS 1 961 234, DE-OS 29 49 340) und gewinnen in neuerer Zeit zunehmend an wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Compression processes of this type are known in several embodiments (for example DE-AS 1 961 234, DE-OS 29 49 340) and have recently gained increasing economic importance.
Final clarity could still be achieved about the causes and effects of this type of molding material compression. However, it is so well known that the compression results from the interaction of fluidization effects on the one hand and the ram forces acting on the molding material particles on the other hand. The fluidization leads to a reduction in the interfacial forces between the molding material particles as well as between them and the model or the molding box and the filling frame, so that the impulse forces exerted on the individual molding material particles by the gas or by neighboring particles n result in a denser packing of the Lead molding material.
It has also been observed that the degree of compression depends not only on the parameters (pressure, speed) of the gas pressure wave, but also on the height of the molding material filling. For example, there is a lower limit for the mold material coverage of the model, below which a satisfactory degree of compaction can no longer be achieved. On the other hand, there is also an upper limit for the molding material coverage, above which the mold back in particular no longer has sufficient compression. It will therefore usually with an excess of molding material, which in the former case leads to an unnecessary height of the mold, in the second case to an unnecessary excess of molding material which has to be stripped off after compression.
The invention is based on the object of proposing a method and a device with the aid of which uniform compression over the mold height can be achieved with a minimum requirement for molding material.
This object is achieved in that a gas-permeable additional mass is placed on the free surface of the molding material and that the gas pressure is brought into effect on the free surface of the additional mass.
Practical tests with such an additional mass have shown that, with appropriate optimization, a uniform degree of compaction can be achieved both over the mold cross-section and over the mold height, with the molding material overlap above the model contour to the level required for the transport and casting strength of the mold can be limited. During the compression process, the gas pressure wave can pass through the additional mass if the flow resistance is not too great and penetrate into the molding material. The additional mass does not affect the fluidization effect. The ram forces responsible for the actual compression are impermeable both on the molding material particles and on the gas. sigen areas of the additional mass effective, the latter passes on the impulses given to the molding material particles. It is important that the additional mass rests on the free surface of the molding material and does not hit the surface of the molding material in an exposed manner, since this would result in undesired premature compression on the back of the mold. The invention also differs from other known proposals, according to which a cover is placed on the surface of the molding material. This acts, even if it is made of elastic material (US Pat. No. 2,830,339), practically like a compression piston, without the compression gas being able to penetrate into the bed of molding material. The same applies to another known proposal (DE-OS 29 49 340) in which the molding surface is completely or partially provided with a gas-impermeable cover in the context of an explosion compression. This is said to either prevent the molding material from crumbling at the back of the mold or to provide less densely compressed areas at the covered areas.
It has also been shown in the method according to the invention that after the compression process, the surface of the molding material is approximately uniformly flat, which is the case with the previously. does not achieve known methods. Due to the optimization of the molding material mass, the molding material supernatant that is necessary in many cases can also be better regulated and, above all, set at a lower height. For a given mold size and mold material filling and a certain degree of compression, the gas energy, i.e. reduce the gas pressure and / or the gas volume, so that there is in particular a reduction in the gas requirement. Finally, the method according to the invention can be carried out regardless of whether the molding material is compressed from above or from below.
Durch bevorzugte weitere Maßnahmen, daß die Zusatzmasse aus mehreren in Richtung senkrecht zur Formstoff-Oberfläche beweglichen Einzelmassen besteht, ist gewährleistet, daß sich jede Einzelmasse entsprechend der ihr von der Druckwelle mitgeteilten Impulskraft bewegen und diese an die Formstoffpartikel weitergeben kann..Preferred additional measures such that the additional mass consists of several individual masses which are movable in the direction perpendicular to the molding material surface ensure that each individual mass can move in accordance with the impulse force imparted by the pressure wave and pass it on to the molding material particles.
According to a further advantageous embodiment, it is provided that the additional mass has a distribution of the individual mass which is adapted to the contour of the model, such that the mass is lower over high model contours than over deep contours.
In a preferred embodiment, the additional mass consists of particles of greater specific gravity than the molding material and a gas-permeable and flexible covering enclosing these particles. The flow resistance of this additional mass and thus the thrust force generated by it can be influenced by the particle shape and its bulk density, so that regulation of the desired effects is possible not only via the size of the additional mass, but also via the aforementioned parameters.
To carry out the aforementioned method, the invention is based on a device with a mold box closed on one side by a model plate with the model, a filling frame that continues this, and a device for generating or storing gas at high pressure, which suddenly has an effect on the molding material in the filling frame brought.
Such a device is characterized in accordance with the invention in that a gas-permeable additional mass which covers the entire surface of the molding material can be placed on top of it and can be lifted off from it after compression.
The additional mass is thus added to each working cycle of the device, e.g. a molding machine, placed on the molding material filled in the molding space, then brought the gas pressure wave into effect and after venting the molding space, the additional mass is removed from the compressed mold.
In the simplest case, the additional mass can consist of a perforated plate, but in a preferred embodiment of the device is formed by a cushion that at least partially covers the molding material surface and that consists of a bed of metal particles and a fabric that encloses them. The metal particles can be, for example, granules, shot or the like, while the woven fabric can be made of plastic or - in the case of compression by explosive forces with appropriate temperature development - made of wire.
The additional mass constructed in this way is, at least to a limited extent, freely suspended or supported, so that it can be placed and removed on the one hand and, on the other hand, can freely follow the forces acting on it.
